Depends. I was all for a youth movement year after the OSU game. I know fans hate it, but the only advantage to being a new coach is you are generally guaranteed 3 years at least. If I was a new coach it would be conference championship contender in year 1 or I am building to year 3. Splitting the middle is a bad move for a new coach.

No imagination.

We should be looking to add starter quality players from the portal at virtually any position except QB and RB.   Taking spares just because they play a specific position of need is useless in the grand scheme of things.   PK and Choate brought in 4 players from the portal last year at ILB and edge, and we played walk-ons at both of those positions.  A good starter at OL/DL/DB/TE/whatever is welcome.

Having said that, our current roster, our recruiting class this year, and our apparent portal options make ILB look like a complete train wreck.  I have no idea how we weren’t more aggressive in recruiting there this year, nor why we aren’t the most urgent program in the country scouring the portal for upgrades there.

Sark didn’t even want PK and Choate to begin with, so I’m a bit perplexed at how they’re being handled.

We already did the starter quality player at QB, so check.

We took 7 freshman OL. We probably won't take a transfer OL unless an all-Big XII caliber guy drops from the sky

Our DL should be fine. Maybe grab an edge rusher, if (again) an all conference pass-rush specialist shows up.

DB should be fine. We have plenty of options to sort through.

TE should be fine. We have lots of youth to put out on the field.

Really, we are just desperate at LB.

Hardest things to find in the portal: High end P5 starter quality OT’s and LB’s. The good ones to enter are the ones recruited into the portal by a school so we will need to go that route.

Just because he didn’t get Muschamp doesn’t mean he didn’t want the guy he hired?? If he didn’t want them or wanted to get rid of them he would have done it like he did to another coach on staff already.

Aside from the customary fuck the Brocks, is there still smoke on them transferring? I remember that picking up steam but then people started saying to wait until after the NC game. Gotta think Tommy B is worth adding to the roster + the entire family loves Flood.

Maybe this time next year, if Tommy isn’t in the two-deep yet

ou will go out and take portal guys and grad transfers regardless of position if they are upgraded and we will sit around and say “we just got some good freshman signed and we don’t have many holes on the roster to upgrade”. And we were 5-7. We will be lucky to be 6-6 next year. We should be going hard at upperclassmen transfers no matter the position if they are upgrades.

Give Jared Verse a huge NIL deal. That's a guy we need to straight up buy.

Since Brian Davis' tweet Texas has taken note and decided not to offer any money to recruits and transfers. Texas sells itself!

The concern with Venables is just the opposite, that he won't use the portal enough. This is based on the assumption that he'll try to apply the Clemson model at OU.

So far, OU's taken two players, a TE and a G. Those are positions of huge need. They may take even one more at each position because numbers are so low in the TE and OL rooms. The other position the Sooner staff should be targeting is DL/DE, based on loss of personnel and the poor performance of those groups in the Alamo Bowl. They'd made some public offers for DL. If Williams leaves, several WR will also likely leave. In that case, OU'll look for QB and WR obviously.

Other than that, OU's probably only going to be looking for elite players who want to leave their current situations, which is rare. Taking guys who are marginally better than guys who are currently on your roster will create an unhappy locker room.

True but from this entire site during the season we have a complete shit roster that needs to be turned over. The locker room seemed to already be unhappy and not unified.

Yes, because nothing makes current members angrier than bringing in a player they can potentially beat for playing time and nothing keeps them more content than pulling players that give them no chance of seeing the field. Am I understanding this correctly?

Grinch seemed to like an undersized dline who shot gaps. What does Venables favor?

Venables success at Clemson was based on sound scheme and exceptional DT talent: Bryan Bresee, Dexter Lawrence, Clelin Ferrell, Christian Wilkins: 6'4, 310 with power, and quickness. The OU defense has good talent in spots, but not to the level of Clemson anywhere (? DB possibily, paradoxically). Based on this, I'm thinking of a scheme based on the following assumptions.

- OU won't get 5-star DT for at least a couple of years (if ever). Everybody wants the same unicorns.

- That he'll do what he did while he was at OU last time, when he had a similar or worse DL. This is assumption could be wrong for several reasons (he's changed, offenses change, rosters change).
On the inside:
Pairing a 6'0, 320 dude who's tough to move (think Casey Walker, from about 10 yrs ago) with basically Jalen Redmond (6'3, 280), quicker DT with pass rush ability.
Redmond looks fat and may have lost quickness during his time at OU. S&C may really help him.
On the outside:
OU has some interesting dudes who may, with more disciple and better scheme, be really good, flexible players: Grimes, Downs, Stripling, Gilliam, Arinze could all factor into a SDE/WDE role productively. The Edge players OU's recruited over the last several years don't have a direct anolog to Venables' old schemes that I recall, but OU has some talent here too (Clayton Smith, who wasn't great in the bowl game, his first real action)

The Bama model.

This guy is a 2023 top 10 national DL who has OU in his top group. Similar to Dindy this cycle, the primary reason he's looking at OU is because he's a legacy.

As you both likely know, the only way OU's getting a look at guys at this level right now is if there's something unique in their recruitment.

Seems like a guy that  blOU will pick up...

Is there intel that is saying this?

He fits the "plugger" role Venables has preferred in the past (when he doesn't have guys with exceptional athleticism), he's in Oklahoma, and OU definitely has need.

Any chatter on the Akron kid? Two freshmen All Americans at WR would be a good start.

Nothing other than that Marion was recruiting him pretty heavy to Pitt and the kid was retweeting the Marion announcement tweets.   Will be interesting to see if Marion continues to recruit him.

Mumpfield and Neyor would be a pretty good pair of portal WRs.

SIAP, on the Mumpfield dude.

After he entered the portal, here are a few of the major P5 offer he got.  What interests me is the OCs/coaches of these programs.

- USC

- LSU

- Ole Miss

- Miss. State

- ... Pitt (Dec 10th)  👀 👀 👀

It's like you didn't watch any of the transfers that ou or Texas brought in this past season. Let me help you out, almost all of them sucked.

Davis -> sucked

Thornton -> sucked

Gray -> sucked

Dunn -> sucked

Morris -> sucked

Oghoufo -> sucked

Richardson -> sucked

Coe -> sucked

Woods -> good

Robinson -> good

Turk -> good

FWIW, PFF has Jacob Cowing as the 2nd best available player in the portal (behind Zach Evans). Mumpfield is #4 with this to say:

Mumpfield is a terrific route-runner. His separation rate against single coverage in 2021 sits in the 96th percentile among all FBS wide receivers, a key factor in his 78.2 receiving grade for the season. The wideout has received a slew of Power Five offers and is bound to make an immediate impact for the program he chooses.

Taj Harris is #3, Neyor not on the list.

Yea because we picked shitty players. I was hoping this year we would go get less shitty players.

Idk about OU but our transfers were all benchwarmers at their previous school so yeah wtf did we expect? Other than Dunn who I thought was OK and Richardson who is TBD.

That doesn't mean transfers can't make an impact. Just get better ones. Ex: Bama and UGA both have transfers playing huge roles for them right now.

Feels like Surly no longer loves Jacob Cowing. Hope Marion feels differently.

ou brought in the best RB and a top 3 OT. Yes Bama got the best WR and LB. So the transfer portal doesn't mean success, even the top players. I am all for bringing in players from the portal, but I hope the staff makes better decisions. Though I still contend that Thornton and Davis were more about culture than on the field production.
