I doubt it will dawn on them, but they are essentially a top notch MAC team at this point.

Let’s see how they’d do against Toledo before we jump to any conclusions.

Texas A&M fails to impress early in first season under Elko after Fisher’s firing

Spoiler

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Texas A&M moved on from coach Jimbo Fisher last year with $75 million remaining on his contract after another disappointing season.

Early results under coach Mike Elko haven’t seemed like much of an upgrade.

No. 25 Texas A&M, a 22 ½-point favorite, squeaked by Bowling Green 26-20 Saturday night in a sloppy game filled with mistakes.

The win came after the Aggies opened the season with a home loss to Notre Dame followed by wins over FCS school McNeese State and the struggling Florida Gators.

Asked what frustrated him most about his team’s performance against Bowling Green, Elko took a deep breath before answering.

“It was a lot,” he said.

The Aggies gave up a 65-yard touchdown pass to tight end Harold Fannin Jr. on the first play of the second half and the Falcons cut the lead to three when they scored on a 40-yard reverse later in the third.

Bowling Green blocked a punt on the ensuing drive, but the Aggies held onto the lead when Jackson Kleather missed a 28-yard field goal.

They looked to have finally put the game away with about two minutes left when Marcus Ratcliffe grabbed an interception in the end zone. But Le’Veon Moss fumbled on the next play to give the Falcons another chance.

“Just so many things to fix and clean up, and we’ve got to get back to work Monday and get a lot better,” Elko said.

He was particularly unhappy with the defense on Fannin, who was left uncovered on his touchdown.

“We did a horrible job managing the tight end all night,” he said. “Obviously he was their best player. We knew it coming in and we let him go for eight for 145. That’s not acceptable.”

Texas A&M had trouble finishing drives in the second game with Marcel Reed at quarterback in place of Conner Weigman, who has a shoulder injury. Elko said after the game that Weigman still has pain in his shoulder and they’re trying to get him “where he can throw comfortably.”

Reed threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 91 yards more, but the Aggies settled for field goals on three of four trips inside the red zone.

“At times he did the things we needed him to do. At times, he didn’t,” Elko said. “But it’s not all on Marcel… when you talk about settling down your quarterback, it’s probably a catch phrase for we’ve got to operate more consistently with what we’re doing. So, I don’t want to make it sound like it’s just on Marcel. It certainly isn’t just on Marcel.”

Despite all A&M’s problems on Saturday, Elko credited his team for not letting things snowball into an upset.

“When you get into those moments and those situations and it feels like it’s spiraling out of control, you see a lot of teams not find ways to win that football game,” he said. “And I think it’s a credit to our guys that we found a way to win it.”

Holy shit, most of them are becoming sentient.

But ain't forget Sark went 5-7 in year one, so of course he's the measuring stick now. But he sucks, remember? Until he didn't, and now they will revert back to "BDF"!!!

Our closest competition was 12 points when we had backups in. But Michigan sucks. But never mind that, all top 5 teams play the sisters of the poor, but we aren't a top 5 team. Georgia, who beat UK by 1 point is the true #1. It all makes sense now. Now back to your regular scheduled  Schadenfreude.

Oh, and it was a "character building win against mighty Bowling Green". K.

There's always an asshole in every big fanbase. There was a guy in a UGA polo in his 50s desperately trying to pick a fight with the Ole Miss fans in our section at Wake last week. His teenage son looked like he wanted to teleport away.

Yes, but also they look like G5 players because they are G5 players.

Holy shit, what 11-15 players do they have that are draftable into the NFL?

Oh it was real that was me!

Though my exact words were "A&M is the best entertainment money could buy and it was a thrilling matchup of two teams in the exact weight class." The telephone game must be quite rusty at Kyle Field.

Sarkisian sucks and Texas is overrated, but they keep pointing in this direction to cheer themselves up about what’s theoretically possible. It’s a shame cognitive dissonance doesn’t hurt.

That's what tends to happen when you raid the portal for "hidden diamonds" from the MAC and Sun Belt.

I think they meant that some of the yell leaders were going to try out for the Dallas cowboys cheerleaders. That’s still technically nfl.

It shouldn't surprise me because I see it every year, but the transformation from "We hired the bestest coach!  He's fixing the culture!" and "Our QB is the most underrated player in the country" to "This idiot coach is playing the wrong QB!" in such a short matter of time is always stunning.

It's like the leaves turning in Colorado.

Weigman’s best move is to get an independent evaluation and shut it down for the year. Then portal out/get paid again.

Win-win. Weigman escapes College Station without much bad tape (excluding the mentalist soul stealing video), and aggy can claim he was a great QB but hurt all the time. He just ran out of training room hours.

Weigman is damaged goods at this point. He's 3 years in and hasn't put anything on tape to suggest he's good, tbh.

He may need to go to either a G5 school, or a lower-level P4 team like MSU. Or take a beating from Texas for his shit talk about him guaranteeing he would beat us. Too many concussions for him to shit talk like that.

Mr wiggy, please check your right shoe.

Would love to see that fucktard lineup after Thanksgiving and watch our entire D line take turns Bomaring his ass into Kyle Field. Happy to have the linebackers and safeties get their sloppy seconds.

They were saying the same thing about Michigan's defense before we strode in their and named our score. Tennessee clearly isn't as good on offense as they showed against the shit teams they had played on their schedule coming into the OU game, but it's also clear that because OU is so hapless on offense that Heupel throttled down on the offense and didn't put his young QB in too much conflict to make plays. I think Texas and Ole Miss absolutely destroy that defense.

It is WILD, because we've been hearing for over a decade how tough the SEC is week in and week out, and now we have an SEC schedule, plus the defending national champs in non-conference, and it's somehow the easiest schedule anyone has ever played.

WILD.

"OU's defense is the real deal."  Until Texas hangs 45 on them and then the goalposts move again.

A few of their posters have started calling us "Texas" instead of "tu." Some would say that's respect, but we know it's more likely an incursion of 2%ers and sips.

Auburn beat up OU and Alabama beat up Georgia. That’s what always happens in the SEC. No wonder the sips beat them both. They still haven’t been tested. The jury is still out.

I assume it's because all that "t.u." shit appeals to emotionally stunted manchildren who, coincidentally, are the same type of people who rage quit the entire internet when their favorite sports team is down bad. I'm sure there were plenty of posters on that board in the preseason for the ride up the rollercoaster but who immediately bailed after the loss to ND. Right now, most of the people on TexAgs are actual college football fans who at least have an inkling of how bad they are and how good we are.

I'm sure the fairweather Ags will all come flooding back if A&M wins 2/3 during the Arkansas-Missouri-MSU stretch.

You see Texas is going to be tested week in and week out with the SEC grind you stupid sip!  Texas can't handle a line of scrimmage league.  And beating the defending champs at home with multiple 1st rounds is a JOKE of a schedule.  Texas just hasn't played a real SEC defense.  USC is a big 10 school that could never hang with SEC teams, except LSU.  But you see, they caught LSU early on when LSU was bad but LSU is going to be a gurd damn power house when they play aggy.   But you see Texas hasn't played anyone and the jury is still out.  Who cares if the AP poll, coaches poll, and all metrics show Texas to be elite dominating teams even with their back up qb.  That's the media just always hyping Texas.  You see you stupid sip, Arch Manning is a 3 star and only gets media hype because of the EsipN media machine.  Texas would get manhandled by Bama except when Texas beat Bama when Bama was no good but you see if they played again, Bama would trash them.  Georgia is going to show sip what the SEC is all about.  Texas and Sankey are in cahoots and gave sip the easiest SEC schedule.  If they only played the insane schedule texum aggy plays.  You see we have to play real teams and have to end the season with the #1 team in the country.  But Texas gets a joke of a schedule.  If they only played real SEC teams, then tu would be exposed for the frauds that they are.  Can't wait for sip to come to Kyle Field so we can spoil their season.  Elko and wrecking crew will expose them.

I thought the kick looked bad viewing live, but it appears to sneak just inside the upright before veering left. That's not the reason Bowling Green lost the game, the reason is that shitty offensive possession after they tripped all over themselves trying to recovery the blocked punt. They put in their backup QB and ran two really bad plays that lost like 5 yards. Then missed a chip shot FG.
