Question for you CA residents: is there such a thing as a queer friendly town/city in CA that has a modest CoL?

Can’t speak to the queer friendly aspect cause even overall it seems more friendly here, there are assholes everywhere. But used to be I would suggest Sacramento… it was the most affordable big city in Ca. Dunno if that’s still the case. Hard to think of a community in the Bay Area that’s just not crazy expensive anymore. Maybe Livermore or San Leandro over the east bay.

Counterpoint: Once you’re at a point where you can afford San Diego, who cares about your consulting career? Coast and enjoy.

Yea-- I'm not talking about MD's coasting, but the manager level who moved during COVID-19 thinking the world would forever be changed, and who genuinely like what SD has to offer (e.g. weather, beach, golf and tennis almost year round-- as opposed to joining a tennis club in the City or getting out for golf, etc.) who have found that living in SD in a lot of industries and careers will hurt your ambitions outside of those few things that SD is known for, which again seems pretty limited.

I lived in Sacramento and the East Bay.  They're expensive but nothing compared to most of the state, and likely still less than Austin.  Further east you go in bay area, less expensive.  Like east of Concord/Walnut Creek.  And then most of the areas along 680.  All queer friendly as you'd expect in the Bay Area.  Sacramento is a nice mid-sized city.  Very queer friendly.  Lots and lots of housing options, least expensive city in NoCal.

And California took the liberty of a literal dividing line from the Oregon border to Santa Clarita outside Los Angeles.  IH-5.  To the west, acceptance, love, and real estate prices that'll make you pass out.  To the east, cheap houses, hatred, and discrimination.  Remember how McCarthy liked to brag that no state had more Trump voters than his state?  That's where they all live.

Career-wise, it's hard to live in SD if you are serious about your career and are not in a) Life Sciences b) Military/Federal work and/or work at Qualcomm? I don't know I just get the sense that there isn't a critical mass of much else and from some of the consultants I've worked with in the Big 4 and Tier-2 firms that during COVID-19 moved from major markets (NY & Boston) to SD, their career path / personal brand / visibility has suffered.

So in that way it's the Dallas of California if you remember the book Liar's Poker and how being put on the team in Dallas was such a demotion like being sent to Career Siberia.

Oh, I wasn’t trashing the city. You know how during the bar/restaurant boom in the 2010s so many Dallas places tried following national trends like farm to table, craft cocktails, etc but just couldn’t resist their inner $30k-millionaire to make it a little nightclub-y? My wife and I had the simultaneous realization that San Diego is just like that while watching the Kettle Exchange staff fist pump in unison to pounding bass on a Sunday afternoon (great spot for drinks btw).

I'm cringing to death while remembering Neighborhood Services and The Common Table and the likes. Thanks for the analogy.

Guerneville is the Gay Riviera. Obviously Palm Springs but IDK about modest COL anymore.

If I could afford it… it would be Santa Barbara. Number 2 and this would probably shock most of y’all but I absolutely loved living in the Rockridge neighborhood in Oakland where it borders Berkeley.

Not at all. Have you been in the hood recently?

Jinx.  We typed the same thing at the same time.  Good to know I'm only half crazy lately.

While I've enjoyed the obvious uptick in ingredient quality in Austin restaurants over the last 10-15 years (and they're supporting local farmers and ranchers instead of Sysco and Ben E. Keith), I'm glad to see they're dialing back the "craft cocktail program", otherwise known as 'the bar.'  There's no more water sommeilliers.  No more "ice programs."  And most places even stopped my 'nails on a chalkboard' pet peeve, greeting me with the "Have y'all dined with us before?  No?  Okay, well then let me tell you how our platform works here.."  Fucking makes my teeth itch.  What's it matter if I've been there before, you gonna treat me different?  How about I say the names of the things on the menu I want to eat and drink, you bring them to me, and then I pay you.

Umm.. no, lol. But yeah loved that area. Used to live walking distance to a grocery store, tap rooms,  kick ass bakery, and coffee shop off College. It was amazing.

Somebody else said Guernville, but really all of Sonoma County is a really special place to me. I have a key customer in Santa Rosa that I always look forward to visiting if for no other reason than the drive. Took a motorcycle ride to Sonoma last weekend that was sublime.

Maddening.  I'm sure the system you have come up with is far too complicated for some commoner like myself.  Oh, it's the exact same as everywhere else?  The fuck are you talking about then?

At least the "Sit Next To You In The Booth To Take Your Order" thing has been put down out of mercy. Now it's more likely to be a flashing jangling electronic device with a sticky touch screen, or some gotdam app (pronounced "opp.") "Did you use the opp? We have great deals on the opp."

I haven't seen anything in California south of San Jose. Got a high school friend who moved to LA long ago and found work in the movie bidness (not porn unfortunately), as well as UT friends who did the same. Maybe catch up on them, or else start a retro 1930s detective agency if I can find one derelict old office building from the era.

The communities between say Petaluma and Guernville would be number 3 for me in CA.

Palm Springs proper is pricey, but there are good values to be had in the neighboring towns.  IF, and it's a big if, you can handle the weather.

I’ll be in Palm Springs for work in September for 2 weeks, any recs?

Lots of queer friendly towns here, but affordable? Ehhhh, but I'll help you out with the cost of living if you take the Ole Battle Axe off my hands! She's awesome! Believe me!

It’s not really desirable in the Summer. Make the hour drive to Temecula wine country

Seriously, you need to check out Slab City. It’s mind blowing

mdleast and I are doing our baseball trip in August and he's taking me to Russian River. I'm excited because the furthest north I've gone is Muir Woods. And we'll be going to Muir Woods because that's always a stop when I'm in SF.

I hope to catch up and meet you then. @mdleast usually hits me up when he's in town. Of course you're going to Russian River! I am going to New York for a week in Aug, hope its not the same time.

Shit.  I put that sit down next to you in a booth to rest rather quickly, nothing a hand on thigh won't cure, except for Chauncey.  That motherfucker always makes sure we're seated in his area every time we go back.

Idk when your last time there was, but about 5 years ago they opened up a whole new complex outside of Santa Rosa. Def check that out.

I have never been and I think we're doing the tap room at one and the brewery tour at the other.

We'll be there in early August as that was the best time to get both a Giants game and an A's game and get the hell out of the heatdome for a few days when it sucks the most.

The original in Santa Rosa has amazing pizza to pair with the beer. The one up north, is much bigger and “nicer” but no pizzas for some strange reason. At least when I used to go, Sunday at the Santa Rosa location was all day happy hour.

Palm Springs

I just took a look at the MLS.   Palm Springs has 30 active listings under $300,000.  All condos, of course.

For Single Family Homes, there are a dozen under $500,000.  Highest active listing is 12,900,000.

I was fortunate enough to get to visit Muir Woods this past January. It was on the heels of a personal tragedy and was very healing for me.
