That’s because our defense is serious business. Socialized daycare, not so much.

We must defend our collapsing bridges, patchwork electricity grid, and other failing infrastructure at all costs!

And the unborn! We're not spending nearly enough. Just five years ago, we learned that the Army had no bullets!

Is that a joke? Public school is 100% socialized education and something to be avoided to the highly discerning family man of today.

Can I point out that the University of Texas, the reason this board exists and where most of its member received undergraduate, post-graduate, and/or professional degrees, is a public school? What in god's name is wrong with you boy?

Sorry should have said compulsory public school because I didn’t realize you’d go out of your way to argue pedantically.

Just now, David Dennison said:

America: socialism for the rich; capitalism for the poor.

The socialism vehicles we have in this country (Medicaid, Medicare, the military as an employer and retirement fund, etc) are of exponentially more utilization and benefit to the “not rich”, though?

The government’s job is first and foremost to protect its sovereignty and keep citizens safe from outside harm. Is this even debatable? Why else would you want a Federal Government in the early days?

Gourmand this question is specifically for you:

Public school is funded by us all no matter our need and free to those who need it; how is this not socialized education just on technical definition?

Ill edit to add if it helps you, there is equally nothing wrong with calling our military “socialized national defense”. Do you have a problem with that term as well?

You're a cowardly debater.  In the first post your attitude toward anything "socialized" is clear.

In your second post, you speak of the importance of national defense. It's paramount.

In you last post, you abandon the pejorative use of "socialized" to avoid the thrashing you'll get because you defined socialism as something bad, named a socialized program (defense) as something good and essential, then tried to backpedal out by referring to what was first pejorative usage as something technically neutral.

Why can't the highly discerning family man of today apply the same level of scorn for the astonishing waste of defense funds (often with little ROI) that the discerning family has for public education which costs a fraction of the same amount with the also necessary goal of creating better citizens and participants in the republic?

I know it will be difficult to flush the headgear of repeated bashing of the education system that mostly seeks to remove public funds from them via vouchers so the rich can get a break on sending their highly discerning brats to the Bluenose Academy for Resume Building to Gain Access to the Ivy League.

Undermining defense is likely less unpatriotic than undermining the goal of an educated citizenry. The goal. We starve teachers and the system and then despise them because the system fails. Did I say "we?" Actually, it's just your team.

Pretty sure there are like 8 times the amount of public school teachers as active duty military.

He's talking about defense industry employees not soldiers. They make a lot of money. A lot more than teachers who provide a much greater benefit to the country at much greater personal sacrifice. In short, teachers are fools in your calculations as is anyone not simply looking out for number one's bottom line.

Citizenship. Quaint old term. The hate engine has chewed it up pretty damn good.

1) My attitude toward socialized education is clear. This is an unpopular, but earnest opinion, but public school is not my standard as someone whose role is to steward my children to the best of my ability. That's it and that is all.

2) My point was to try and get Gourmand to understand that calling public schools "socialized education" is not wrong. How you feel about socialized education is a secondary matter. If I erred at all as a "debater", it would be in adding my personal opinion, stance and belief, in an attempt at being funny and stilted (though 100% honest), which aroused the ire of some as misogynist and elitist. I will own that.

3) I don't see a reason why you can't apply the same level of scorn for the astonishing waste of defense funds (often with little ROI) that the discerning family has for public education which costs a fraction of the same amount with the also necessary goal of creating better citizens and participants in the republic?" Have at it, I will probably mostly agree with you.

OMG. I hadn't heard this in quite a while: Who is Union Carbide? A little grandmother somewhere who owns the stock!

She's the one who made the decisions and reaped the big money from their Bhopal Plant until...oops.

Quote

Corporate negligence

This point of view argues that management (and to some extent, local government) underinvested in safety, which allowed for a dangerous working environment to develop. Factors cited include the filling of the MIC tanks beyond recommended levels, poor maintenance after the plant ceased MIC production at the end of 1984, allowing several safety systems to be inoperable due to poor maintenance, and switching off safety systems to save money— including the MIC tank refrigeration system which could have mitigated the disaster severity, and non-existent catastrophe management plans.[6][40] Other factors identified by government inquiries included undersized safety devices and the dependence on manual operations.[6] Specific plant management deficiencies that were identified include the lack of skilled operators, reduction of safety management, insufficient maintenance, and inadequate emergency action plans.

Oddly, granny didn't get sued even though I'm sure she would have made the same decisions.

Read also about Enron for the benefits of stock ownership on small scale and how you come out compared to the rich owners. It's really not the same.

I'm quite sure you don't know what pedantic means. I don't find your "compulsory" to meaningfully change your original message or my response. There is no law that forces parents to send their children to public school. Parents are generally required to send their children to a school, not necessarily public school. Public education itself is a net good for society and something we should invest more in as recognized by pretty much anyone that wants a strong economy or a strong country.

Do you really not see how you are splitting hairs on the hairs you tried to split earlier? There is an obvious sub-text of distinction between a public university with a merit-based entrance process and which requires payment (tuition) to attend versus the free public school system for any/all in a certain zip code despite ability, that we were obviously talking about.

Further, how would socialism apply to private schools? Why or how would we be talking about anything but free public school systems for you to debate why compulsory is still not a descriptor that is adequate to make my point?

It seems like you are trying to nit at definitions and, when that doesn't quite scratch the itch, quibble at nits that don't even make sense for the sake of it-- which is why I used the term pedantic.

Quote

First, they aren't vehicles for socialism, but rather for socialized goods and services. I'm sorry that your nonpublic education didn't cover the difference between those words. Second, after correcting for your incorrect term, that's also sort of the point. The things you hate and want to do away with are in fact the things that help the poor. The military's primary benefit is to those that have property in the United States that needs protecting. Ideally that would be everyone here, but some idiots want to make that as difficult as possible.

I don't hate or want to do away with anything. I was simply agreeing with Gourmand with him saying public education is socialized education. I want to keep it around for those who need it, and if it's good enough for you and yours, more power to you.

The military's primary benefit 1a) is to protect the lives of citizens from foreign and occupying forces and subjugation. 1b) is to those who have property that needs protecting, sure, I'll give you that. Either way, I'm good with the socialized national defense and socialism in that use case.

He is an idiot and the franchise is an embarrassment on the field.  But the Texans on average distribute to their partners about a million dollars for every ownership point each year and the franchise value is about 5 times what they paid in. The people I know who invested originally have already recouped their initial investment times about three.

So it really does not suck for their investors at all.

owning an NFL team is the closest thing to a license to print money that there is.  anyway, that's why i said "like" rather than "is".  and to complain about the lucky sperm winner.

So Chrispy/Donkey has been banned at least 4 times (there were two Chrispy accounts, with one ending in _) and GRHorn has been banned 3 or 4 times...why isn't the community able to have these dipshits turfed permanently? Obviously a question for the mods, but if someone comes in your house and shits on the floor, you should be able to keep their ass out of your house.

I go to a meeting and come back to a ton of hilarity here.

@DDD Dad You are right in the beginning. What you stated was absolutely the intent. What I think you missed-- what everyone missed except for Longhornfan and the mods, because it's been a conversation handled in private as these should be-- is the following. I'll field your questions after you've reviewed the below and gotten caught up to speed:

1) I was brought back from bannation. I was given a reprieve and allowed to continue to be a citizen of this community. Yay!

2) Longhornfan got offended because he was called out multiple times for being grossly wrong. That's another conversation for another time. The net effect of this call out was he was upset and wanted me gone. He admitted to spending his entire lunch hour going back into my not-very-prolific posting history and negging every post, literally hundreds within the hour, no matter the context or content of post, in the effort to singlehandedly ban me. He admits this freely.

3) That behavior was bad faith and outside of the bounds of what I initially decreed (and, again, is actually against the rules of this board and is deemed harassment. I've appreciated Longhornfans light touch after being warned further by mods-- note: reporting posts in private works) and thus in my eyes I was actually not legitimately banned.

4) This is why I created the new handle, yet continued to keep the same syntax (Animal ending in -key + Tobacco product), because I was never hiding myself as a poster.

I used to think nothing was funnier than when people would jump out of their Lazy Boy to proclaim "It's DONKEY! look at his user name!" as if they were Robert Langdon and a genius in cryptography and were brilliant, which was funny because I was being obvious.

But now I think the funniest thing is watching a bunch of you do the message board posting of Brendan Frasier clapping and being wrong, because you disagree with my core belief system and politics and wish to be rid of the meddlesome priest.

On the other hand he’s an worthless, old POS. It might be better to keep him as far away from the negotiating table as possible.
