I can understand that thinking, and if we were just talking about the first GA game, I might agree with you, but… Looking at 2024 and the opportunity the team had had last year, we had 3 games against elite defenses where these truths were made blatantly obvious:

  • Our oline was not effective against elite defensive fronts
  • Against elite defensive fronts, our running game became largely nonexistent
  • Against elite defenses, the responsibility to manufacture offense would fall on the QB who would be operating under duress
  • Ewers was not very adept operating under duress and being the sole source of offense and would not be able to pull out victories under these conditions

3 games, 3 manifestations of the exact same problems, 3 opportunities to try a different QB who might have better success under those conditions, 3 choices to ride and ultimately die with Ewers, 1 missed opportunity to do everything you possibly could to try to bring a championship home.

What’s the definition of insanity?  I mean, I’m a Sark fan.  He is undoubtedly a good coach building a powerhouse here and I’m happy we have him.  It doesn’t mean he shits golden nuggets and farts rainbows and never makes mistakes.  Hindsight is 20/20, which is why you have retrospectives in attempt to be better the next time.  Here’s to Sark being less hand wavy than fans about his shortcomings in 2024.

that conclusion is only really cemented after the Ohio State semifinal. two losses to Georgia could simply be Kirby/Saban coaching tree/got Sark's number, etc. probably not but more importantly ...

...fact is, you change THREE plays the last two years that have nothing to do with QE, QE leads Texas to 1 if not 2 national championships. That's much closer to a real fact than AM takes Texas all the way last year.  a Blue fumble against WA, a mental lapse by the defense at the half of tOSU, AD doesn't run a lazy route, wingo isn't shoe string tackled against tOSU.... and yes more than a few QE plays could have changed the trajectory too but the fact remains we were super close twice and it wasn't clearly QE's fault, there are clear plays that had they gone our way, we're in dynasty mode.

so while I might agree with everyone on what coulda, shoulda happened, it was not insane for Sark to stick with QE.

And yet here we are, debating Ewers vs Arch, because that didn't happen.

I wonder if some of these posters think Sark should have relinquished playcalling duties to an obviously superior, or at least different, OC after red zone failures and the OSU pitch debacle?

you know what else didn't happen?  AM take over for QE, AM lose to AZ State or someone else and then we have a fucking disaster on our hands.  the trajectory of the program is headed up and has been every single year. there was more than a theoretical risk that last year would have been a disaster with yanking QE in favor of a redshirt freshman phenom. failure to see that risk, failure to see the program is on hella solid footing, in part because of how Sark managed a VERY delicate year last year is the problem.

We have no idea how manning would’ve done against ASU but I would bet he wouldn’t throw that bonehead interception in the 4th quarter when all we needed to do was run clock.

nobody else took abuse like i did as shown in those screen shots. not even close. if allll of those people who said alllll of that wild shit to me didn’t exist, then neither would my screenshots of their personal attacks, which include mental health pot shots which i’m still receiving in this thread to this day. again, because of my football opinion, which again, has been proven correct.

i’ll repeat what i said in the post of mine which you neg repped: in what world does all of that ^^^ get to happen (and those screenshots were all from a handful of posts on one single page) with no push back, no issues, but i’m not allowed to respond at the end of the day when proven right? come on man. stop acting like im the one who’s out of line here.

I've defended you plenty across various topics on this board. I sure as hell can produce receipts for that too. And I agree with you - there are absolutely some posters here who go after you no matter what. Fuck those posters and you were right here. However...

But do in a way that isn't plaintive, and whining, and woe is fucking me. Over and Over again. Honestly, you can just post the pics, tag everyone in them, and then drop the mic, and anytime they say shit to you, just say "Just like you were right on Quinn Ewers." But that isn't what you do. You show up bitching and moaning about your mistreatment and personal attacks on an internet message board that you voluntarily participate in, for fuck's sake.

I'm sure Sark thought that with our defense, that an experienced quinn. even with the flaws. gave us a better chance to win than switching to an inexperienced Arch in the middle of conference play.     He was almost right.    We will never know if he was wrong.

I also think that if Quinn doesn't come back in 2024 and its Arch's team from spring practice on we would have been better off.

Its not always cut and dry.

True.

However, if Arch leads Texas to a title this year, or if he's even demonstratively better than Quinn was at guiding the offense, I'm not sure the 2024 QB decision once Quinn returned from injury was much of a Sophie's choice. Instead, we'll be adamant that Sark made a mistake.

It's not a given Arch loses to AZ state, and it's not a given it's a disaster if he does.  Those are hypothetical outcomes, as is that Arch comes in and we beat Az State, Ohio State and win it all.  The only thing that is a certainty is that Quinn wasn't capable of performing well enough against elite defenses when the offensive line got pantsed.  When you get to the point of win or go home, you pull out all the stops, and if you don't and wind up going home, you deserve your criticism for not doing everything you possibly could in an effort to win it all at the moment you had the opportunity.  There are no guarantees Texas will be in a semifinal again this year.  Or next.  Or the year after that.

Sure if Arch goes out and throws for 3tds and 0 ints and 300 yards against Ohio St, it will make that decision look worse.    If he has some growing pains, it will look better.       I just don't buy into the theories of being loyal to quinn or worrying about his draft stock etc etc.     No way did Sark every think "i know that Arch gives the rest of my 84 guys a better chance to win a title but I'm going with Quinn"

You're 100% right. I don't spend much time here on the football board, I don't really spend much time on the baseball board, and if I do it's the college baseball board. I don't do anything on the basketball board. I show up on the Volleyball and Softball threads at the appropriate times of the year, for about a month. The rest of my time on Surly is spent on 995, with some Daily Texan, Food & Travel and historically some Cloak Room, although that's down to zero these days.

I don't know how often it happens to you. I can't quantify that. But you're sort of proving my point, because damn near every time I do run into you here, guess what you're doing? Therefore, what is my perception of you likely to be, fair or not?

I think it's somewhat ironic, to the point of laughable, that you want to accuse someone else of making a mountain out of this, or any, molehill. When you start slinging shit, it's perfectly justified. When I, or others, show up and say "Hey, stop slinging shit" we're being hyperbolic and over-reacting? Oh, I see, this is my fault for complaining and continuing the conversation, but you're the victim and in no way accountable for the initial posting and your responses. Seems totally reasonable.

If you want the hive mind to stop following you around, stop making it so easy for them with how you post. I've been one of the bigger advocates for you on this site, and I'm finding this thread boring and tedious. I don't have a moral high ground of any kind. I'd love for your posts to not come across as whining and plaintive, and not giving those shitfaces reasons to follow you around and be bitches, and I'd love for you to respond in a way where people who are predisposed to advocate for you aren't wading through your shit and contemplating putting you on ignore.

LOL. Thousands of keystrokes. The sum total of my posting to you and about you on this thread has taken up...maybe 15 minutes of my life to date.

Remember when Quinn was missing worthy by four yards and we thought it was worthy’s fault?  Something has always been off. Yes, he had made some great throws but every qb has

I heard a stat about Worthy on a fantasy show recently. His catch rate on deep balls sucked last year. Not to defend Quinn but maybe they both aren't good at deep passes.

You're arguing with a brick wall and you will get nothing of value out of the conversation. That dude has some friends on this site and I'm glad they all enjoy talking to each other, but there will be no upside for you talking to him on this thread. Him and a few others are absolutely myopic on this issue. To be clear, there are people in the pro-Quinn group who are equally myopic, but they don't drop this "woe is me" self pitying bullshit all over the thread.

Quinn was a good QB. He had many flaws. Most of us appreciate what he did for the program while acknowledging his limitations. Anyone judging Sark's decisions about who should start at QB is doing so with imperfect information, even if we have the benefit of hindsight. I also don't think Ewers' performance as a rookie in a preseason game - for the fucking Dolphins - means as much about him as a player as people on this board seem to think. Either way, the binary thinking that many people seem to apply to this topic is useless. Football doesn't work like that.

This topic is cooked. I keep coming back only to satisfy my morbid curiosity and because I enjoy watching some of y'all hoot at each other like retards. But don't come to this thread hoping for productive conversation.

you can come up with a million fantastical reasons as to why i’m in the wrong here, but the bottom line is that if you talk a bunch of crazy shit to someone for his opinion, you’d better be prepared to have him come back at you when he’s ultimately proven right. this is not unique to me, this is just how life works.

Big Bam Sam > Ewers > Case

Ash was so much better than Case, and if Applewhite didn't run him into the ground would have been better than Ewers. You could see Ash was getting better, you could never see that with Ewers. Though Ewers has the raw stats advantage due to better being on much better teams and playing for an elite OC and playcaller.

In hindsight, it may have been a good option to have Arch play part of the OU game to see if he can handle a good defense, though it would have come against Ewers losing reps coming back from Injury. Also, IIRC, Arch took couple of shots when trying to make a play downfield where I was thinking a check down would have been more prudent. This tendency of Arch to be a bit reckless about protecting himself could have prompted Sark in not exposing an RS freshman when an experienced though flawed QB is available. Imagine what the reaction would have been if Arch had gotten hurt due to not being experienced enough to protect himself.

The funny thing is that he wasn’t right. QE was not “one of the worst “players on our offense, and his pro career and draft position has nothing to do with it. He was pretty good but not as great as advertised, which hurt the feeling of childish fans, which made them lash out. That’s all this ever was.

his sports IQ is at least one standard deviation above the norm for most posters on this board, maybe two standard deviations above the norm for the football board.

he actually has very well thought out takes on most texas sports, all the time. his posts are sometimes long, he often repeats himself but as true as that is, so is the beating he takes from grown ass men who cannot help themselves.  three things are true here, the sun rising and setting, derka repeating himself (oh the fucking horror) and these guys just piling on every fucking thing he says while blaming only derka for the 17 car pile up that occurs.

and again, the following is not my personal opinion, it’s the PFF ratings from 2024: quinn was the 12th best qb in the sec last year, and the 200th best qb in the country.  how on earth do you figure that makes him one of the better offensive players on two of the most loaded teams we’ve ever had?

Oh My God Who The Hell Cares GIFs - Find & Share on GIPHY

Derka cares.  I'll make a comment on the arc of this thread (and many others), and then hopefully move on.  (Who am I kidding?):

This is surlyhorns, a board full of assholes.  I mean, I cannot count the number of times I've seen extremely disparaging references to myself by posters who I barely recognize, and way more often than not I just laugh and think "OK".  Taking these arguments personally is a really, really bad idea.  People don't like my politics, they don't like my music opinions, they don't like my limited experience playing sports (for fuck's sake all I ever did was wrestle and bowl).  That's fine, make your bed and lie in it.  The vast majority of posters just really don't give a shit and CERTAINLY don't keep "receipts" about random arguments.

Are the mental health potshots OK?  Not in a million years.  The rest of it?  Just surly back and forth.  I cannot possibly remember who insulted me yesterday much less years ago, but here we are.  C'est la vie?
