This thread is awesome.  Ewers, Arch, Sark, VY, Simms, Applewhite, Ehlinger, victimization, victim blaming.  We just  need someone to post something political so it gets moved to the cloak room and it will officially be The Most Surly Thread In The World™.

I'm sure Message Board Rainman will come along shortly with a screenshot of something political from 2 years ago

I just added the Cowboys, Raiders, and JaMarcus. If that ain't enough toxicity for you, seek help.

All things considered, Sark prolly fucked up by not dialing up "First and Manning" in the tOSU game.

I think he was too deep into the game by that point, so... shit happens, right?

The explanation for not going to Manning after halftime in UGa One and the rest of the season seems to me to be summed up by the apparent fact that he, Sark, is intent on building a Sabanesque Juggernaut/Dynasty and his opinion was - and is - that if the problem at hand is more likely to hurt the long plan if his decision is wrong, then go with the plan with less downside. From that perspective, he probably made the right choice. One can scarcely imagine the havoc if Arch had gone in and thrown a pick-6 instead of the strip-scoop-score that actually occurred.

...but I still wish we coulda seen Arch in there, although the seemingly quite likely mild concussion woulda shoulda prevented that, anyway.

You know who fucked VY over the most by declaring for the draft?  VY.  Another year on the 40 Acres, another shot at a national title, and most importantly . . . no Jeff Fisher.  (More likely than not.)

I'm still convinced the Texans having the #1 pick in the NFL Draft was the impetus.

Even with what we know now, Houston passing on VY was the biggest mistake in franchise history. One of the worst fuck yous to a fanbase I've ever seen.

Mario Williams, the nerve. LOL.

I posted long ago that I didn't agree with Sark's choice, but understood it post Georgia 1. He's the QB whisperer. If he didn’t stick with his word of Ewers is our starter he would have gone back on that word and his commitment. Not to mention failing as the QB whisperer.

@SL Xpress described it in far more detail but..

Sure, that goes without saying, but Ewers' injuries would override that. Quite a crowd of Surlies speculated on the extent of physical problems.

I watched this game, and cheered for VY. I can absolutely tell you that I would have jumped into being a Texans fan wholeheartedly if they'd taken VY. The fact that they did not is 100% the reason that I don't give a fuck about the Texans and have eschewed the NFL. Outside of a small window in Austin for college, I've lived in Houston my entire life. They can all get fucked. I'll cheer for the Texans in the sense that I want good things to happen to Houston, but I've turned down plenty of free tickets to go watch them play on Sunday. No interest. I'll reconsider if it's a suite. That's it.

Agreed, but I questioned then, as I continue to still, the degree those injuries were the cause of Ewers' issues vs mental and technical ones.

My grandparents invested in the Texans.  I was in the box with the other minority owners that day, and stood up and loudly cheered for VY when that happened.  I was politely asked to never do that again.

I still go to games if I am in town.  Good food, good seats on 50 yard line club, suite access, parking next to the front door, and it costs me$0.  But I just have never cared much about the Texans other than the money they generate for us.

I've been an obnoxious fan on many occasions. I'm not sure I've ever been more obnoxious than for this game.

I went by myself. I was wearing a Tennessee Titans shirt with a big picture of Vince Young's face on the front of the shirt. I didn't have an amazing seat, but honestly, it doesn't even feel like there's a bad seat in the house in that stadium. In any case, it wasn't the worst seat. But naturally I'm surrounded by Texans fans. And I'm by myself. And I'm unabashedly loudly rooting for Vince Young every time Tennessee has the ball. People are climbing over their seats to talk trash at me, and I'm having none of it. I'm not a big guy by any stretch of the imagination, but there's something missing in my brain where I honestly don't understand consequences. I mean, I know they're there, but they just don't register. It's not fearlessness. It's obliviousness, which is not the same thing.

So I'm doing my oblivious thing, talking all kinds of shit at the top of my voice - and I'm a pretty loud guy - telling anyone and everyone that Vince is going to win this game. When he scored that winning touchdown it's like someone let all the air out of a balloon in everyone around me. Just a collective, "Oooooooooof!" I know I've had moments of magical fulfillment in other sports settings, but no where where I felt like I was one against many. To be fair, there were plenty of people in the stands to see Vince, so I wasn't exactly alone. But in the area I was in I was the target of hatred.

I made sure to rattle my keys and talk all kinds of shit at everyone there as they filed for the exits. It's something of a miracle I didn't get my ass beat that day. I certainly deserved it with my behavior.

I mean, I basically ended up a Titans fan for a couple of years (which was fucking annoying because Fuck Bud Adams) until realizing that Fisher hated VY and it wasn't going to work out.

I still get angry when this situation pops up in my head. As a DIEHARD Oilers fan who was crushed when Adams moved the franchise, with a young Texans franchise with no success yet, the gods gift wrapped VY to Houston. The kid that filled up the Astrodome in high school, the kid who had the greatest college championship performance ever, the kid who dreamed of playing for his hometown, was right there for the taking. It was the chance to bring back pro football excitement in Houston, to make amends and reward the fanbase with an iconic local sports figure. And the powers that be decided to take a no-name workout warrior DE with the #1 pick. It's still unbelievable.

Even if VY would've had a worse career in Houston compared to his actual results, it's still a no-brainer to pick him. No one would "blame" the organization for taking him. The fans wouldn't have been mad about taking him over someone else. He could have literally had a career-ending injury in his first season, and the fans now would be more diehard for the Texans than they are today.

Amusingly, by that point I was near a decade past the moment I knew the Cowboys long-term fate.  The clock started the day Switzer was hired. At that point, having grown up a Dallas fan I was on the path to eschewing the NFL all together. Had FYJF actually leaned into VY or Houston drafted him and done the same, I might well be a Houston or Nashville supporter today.

I don't neg on this sports board or for sports takes, even horrible ones but the way his question was positioned, got real damn close.

So in that case he chose a player over the team. He had the perfect cover of injuries as well to mask it.

Watching him this past weekend do the exact same stuff tells me it’s mental and technical at this point.

I’m not reading jack shit that was posted in response to me, but I will say one last thing since for some reason Derka decided to pick a fight…

…it’s a very Derka move to spike the football and declare himself “right” that Quinn definitely will not be a good NFL QB after one preseason game

That’s it ✌🧡🤘🏼

Derka cares.  I'll make a comment on the arc of this thread (and many others), and then hopefully move on.  (Who am I kidding?):

This is surlyhorns, a board full of assholes.  I mean, I cannot count the number of times I've seen extremely disparaging references to myself by posters who I barely recognize, and way more often than not I just laugh and think "OK".  Taking these arguments personally is a really, really bad idea.  People don't like my politics, they don't like my music opinions, they don't like my limited experience playing sports (for fuck's sake all I ever did was wrestle and bowl).  That's fine, make your bed and lie in it.  The vast majority of posters just really don't give a shit and CERTAINLY don't keep "receipts" about random arguments.

Are the mental health potshots OK?  Not in a million years.  The rest of it?  Just surly back and forth.  I cannot possibly remember who insulted me yesterday much less years ago, but here we are.  C'est la vie?

You were a bowler?    Fucking nerd
