This thread is awesome.  Ewers, Arch, Sark, VY, Simms, Applewhite, Ehlinger, victimization, victim blaming.  We just  need someone to post something political so it gets moved to the cloak room and it will officially be The Most Surly Thread In The World™.

I'm sure Message Board Rainman will come along shortly with a screenshot of something political from 2 years ago

All things considered, Sark prolly fucked up by not dialing up "First and Manning" in the tOSU game.

I think he was too deep into the game by that point, so... shit happens, right?

The explanation for not going to Manning after halftime in UGa One and the rest of the season seems to me to be summed up by the apparent fact that he, Sark, is intent on building a Sabanesque Juggernaut/Dynasty and his opinion was - and is - that if the problem at hand is more likely to hurt the long plan if his decision is wrong, then go with the plan with less downside. From that perspective, he probably made the right choice. One can scarcely imagine the havoc if Arch had gone in and thrown a pick-6 instead of the strip-scoop-score that actually occurred.

...but I still wish we coulda seen Arch in there, although the seemingly quite likely mild concussion woulda shoulda prevented that, anyway.

I posted long ago that I didn't agree with Sark's choice, but understood it post Georgia 1. He's the QB whisperer. If he didn’t stick with his word of Ewers is our starter he would have gone back on that word and his commitment. Not to mention failing as the QB whisperer.

@SL Xpress described it in far more detail but..

Sure, that goes without saying, but Ewers' injuries would override that. Quite a crowd of Surlies speculated on the extent of physical problems.

Agreed, but I questioned then, as I continue to still, the degree those injuries were the cause of Ewers' issues vs mental and technical ones.

Mario Williams, the nerve. LOL.

Never forget:

My grandparents invested in the Texans.  I was in the box with the other minority owners that day, and stood up and loudly cheered for VY when that happened.  I was politely asked to never do that again.

I still go to games if I am in town.  Good food, good seats on 50 yard line club, suite access, parking next to the front door, and it costs me$0.  But I just have never cared much about the Texans other than the money they generate for us.

I've been an obnoxious fan on many occasions. I'm not sure I've ever been more obnoxious than for this game.

I went by myself. I was wearing a Tennessee Titans shirt with a big picture of Vince Young's face on the front of the shirt. I didn't have an amazing seat, but honestly, it doesn't even feel like there's a bad seat in the house in that stadium. In any case, it wasn't the worst seat. But naturally I'm surrounded by Texans fans. And I'm by myself. And I'm unabashedly loudly rooting for Vince Young every time Tennessee has the ball. People are climbing over their seats to talk trash at me, and I'm having none of it. I'm not a big guy by any stretch of the imagination, but there's something missing in my brain where I honestly don't understand consequences. I mean, I know they're there, but they just don't register. It's not fearlessness. It's obliviousness, which is not the same thing.

So I'm doing my oblivious thing, talking all kinds of shit at the top of my voice - and I'm a pretty loud guy - telling anyone and everyone that Vince is going to win this game. When he scored that winning touchdown it's like someone let all the air out of a balloon in everyone around me. Just a collective, "Oooooooooof!" I know I've had moments of magical fulfillment in other sports settings, but no where where I felt like I was one against many. To be fair, there were plenty of people in the stands to see Vince, so I wasn't exactly alone. But in the area I was in I was the target of hatred.

I made sure to rattle my keys and talk all kinds of shit at everyone there as they filed for the exits. It's something of a miracle I didn't get my ass beat that day. I certainly deserved it with my behavior.

I watched this game, and cheered for VY. I can absolutely tell you that I would have jumped into being a Texans fan wholeheartedly if they'd taken VY. The fact that they did not is 100% the reason that I don't give a fuck about the Texans and have eschewed the NFL. Outside of a small window in Austin for college, I've lived in Houston my entire life. They can all get fucked. I'll cheer for the Texans in the sense that I want good things to happen to Houston, but I've turned down plenty of free tickets to go watch them play on Sunday. No interest. I'll reconsider if it's a suite. That's it.

I mean, I basically ended up a Titans fan for a couple of years (which was fucking annoying because Fuck Bud Adams) until realizing that Fisher hated VY and it wasn't going to work out.

I still get angry when this situation pops up in my head. As a DIEHARD Oilers fan who was crushed when Adams moved the franchise, with a young Texans franchise with no success yet, the gods gift wrapped VY to Houston. The kid that filled up the Astrodome in high school, the kid who had the greatest college championship performance ever, the kid who dreamed of playing for his hometown, was right there for the taking. It was the chance to bring back pro football excitement in Houston, to make amends and reward the fanbase with an iconic local sports figure. And the powers that be decided to take a no-name workout warrior DE with the #1 pick. It's still unbelievable.

Even if VY would've had a worse career in Houston compared to his actual results, it's still a no-brainer to pick him. No one would "blame" the organization for taking him. The fans wouldn't have been mad about taking him over someone else. He could have literally had a career-ending injury in his first season, and the fans now would be more diehard for the Texans than they are today.

Amusingly, by that point I was near a decade past the moment I knew the Cowboys long-term fate.  The clock started the day Switzer was hired. At that point, having grown up a Dallas fan I was on the path to eschewing the NFL all together. Had FYJF actually leaned into VY or Houston drafted him and done the same, I might well be a Houston or Nashville supporter today.

This is surlyhorns, a board full of assholes.  I mean, I cannot count the number of times I've seen extremely disparaging references to myself by posters who I barely recognize, and way more often than not I just laugh and think "OK".  Taking these arguments personally is a really, really bad idea.  People don't like my politics, they don't like my music opinions, they don't like my limited experience playing sports (for fuck's sake all I ever did was wrestle and bowl).  That's fine, make your bed and lie in it.  The vast majority of posters just really don't give a shit and CERTAINLY don't keep "receipts" about random arguments.

Are the mental health potshots OK?  Not in a million years.  The rest of it?  Just surly back and forth.  I cannot possibly remember who insulted me yesterday much less years ago, but here we are.  C'est la vie?

I'm agnostic on whether I personally think Manning should have replaced Ewers. I can see reasonable arguments for and against. What I am not agnostic on is whether or not I think Sark is in a better position to make that decision than I am (or anyone else on this thread). He knows more about football than we do, he knows more about the players than we do, he knows more about the locker room than we do. He's not under any meaningful outside pressure to make a decision that is detrimental to the team as a whole. Sark isn't perfect, but I think he's at least earned a little trust in how he manages his roster and his team culture.
We can speculate all day about why Sark stuck with Ewers, but we won't know. It could be misplaced loyalty or concern about Sark's image as a QB developer, and I can't definitely say it isn't, but it could be a million other real and substantive concerns indicating that Ewers was the better choice. And there's no counterfactual for us to use in order to prove the issue one way or the other - we can't go back in time, have Sark start Manning, then compare how the season went.
To be clear, I'm happy to speculate and I'm happy to talk about Ewers' level of play. But the conversation loses all value when you become dug in to a position and are unwilling to keep in mind what I've just said - we can't know one way or the other what the right choice was, and that reasonable people can have different opinions. Having a different opinion doesn't make the other person malicious, arbitrary, or stupid.
For my bit of speculation, I also am surprised at how few people have mentioned a very basic reason that Sark may have gone with Ewers - coaches play the players they trust, and people tend to trust someone they know well. In other words, not only is Ewers more experienced than Manning, but Sark is has more experience with Ewers. As I've noted several times, Ewers has his flaws but Sark knows those flaws. He can coach around them. That's not just a Sark thing, that's most coaches. Saban going to Tua over Hurts is so remarkable because it was so unusual. I'm just never surprised when a coach goes with a veteran. There usually has to be a compelling reason to switch to the younger guy.

Admiral Bull Halsey knew a hell of a lot more about naval warfare than I do, but I trust the fictitious Ramius’ opinion that he acted stupidly.

I generally agree with you about trusting Sark but this being the internet, second guessing experts is what we do. Just shut down this site if we cant share opinions and argue about coaching because we are dumber than coaches.

I trusted Muschamp and wanted him as our coach. But he had meathead tendencies of protecting his defense with a conservative offense. He still knew more than any of us.

I do suspect Sark made the decision to keep Quinn in there because he was more predictable and Sark could manage the game and scheme guys open for big plays. And Sark knew he needed two engaged QBs on the roster for such a long season. If that was the decision-making, I’m not sure that was a sound one.

That's not how I saw it then or now.

My view was that Sark understood that his reputation as the QB whisperer would be tarnished. He also knew his commitment to his own words, "Ewers is our starting QB" prior to the season contributed further. In essence, Sark dug his own hole, his ego and fear of negative media coverage, possible negative influence on recruiting (maybe even in the 2025 cycle) and his own reputation as the QB Whisperer might be permanently tarnished if he made the switch. Further, as we discussed/suspect and evidence supports with the NFL camp, it was Ewers mental and technical aspects. Again, the QB Whisperer ego lead Sark astray in the "I can fix him" way.

To help quell the demand, Sark played Arch LESS and in fewer ways as the season progressed. For a lot of reasons, but namely ego and fear, Sark couldn't bench Ewers.

And yes, the moment we can't question a player or our a coach is when I'll start looking for "letters" in my "inbox" and offers to meet immamac in the parking lot for a fist to cuffs.

All that said, its the past. My thoughts are pure fucking speculation. I don't and almost certainly won't ever know the full truth and frankly, at this point, it don't make a shit. I don't really care. It's in my data bank. I see similar shit in the future I'll fucking mark it.

For now, I care more about 2025, being ranked #1, playing OSU and this bad ass run we're about to make.

Risk fucking Arch up by replacing Ewers with him and it not going well or him getting injured while burning bridges in cratering Ewers’s draft prospects to ride with an unproven (ULM and MSU were not exactly tests for a championship run) QB

VS.

Go with the guy you’ve been working with for three years while riding an incredible defense and incubating your prize piece dynasty-establishing QB.

Not an easy choice with plenty of reasoning for each, and nothing that happens this season should change that fact. But it of course will. And if Arch balls out like we all want him to, this thread will get turned to 11 with a whole heap of hindsight.

The Texans didn’t like VY’s agent. VY hired an attorney family friend of his uncle to be his agent (who didn’t have any other NFL clients) and the guy ended up stealing a lot of his money.

Ricky hired Master P to be his agent and his contract was fucking stupid with all the milestones he had to reach in order to get paid.

QE hires a guy who is president of the Southlake Dragons football club to be his agent. A guy who goes on a podcast saying Quinn fell in the draft because vet QBs were telling teams Quinn was so good they didn’t want him on the bench behind them.

Texas Football needs to teach their marquee players how to pick competent sports agents.

On the one hand, I also did a double take at @Rimbo’s comment about Arch. My eyes tell me that Arch has a much better deep ball and I see that the numbers bear that out.

But it’s also important to remember that Arch put up those numbers against UTSA, ULM, and MSU. I still think Arch showed hes better as aspects of the game, but the numbers from 2024 dont necessarily tell the whole story.

You don't have to use your eyes. The receipts are in and the numbers don't lie. Arch out performed Ewers in EVERY single metric and as for Redzone, look at the numbers.

As for the competition, fair, but keep in mind that after Georgia our head coach never let Arch throw another ball and saying he was used "sparingly" is being extremely generous. Which, extremely limiting next year's starting QB meaningful snaps for half the year it itself a mistake.

But lets just focus on Redzone. Ya know where we gave aggie their only points and handed the ball to OSU.
