Texas Recruiting Notes 2026: They Can't Keep Getting Away With This

They want you to not care we’ve gone 0-fer for 8/9 quality ones we were supposedly 50/50 with and got the big 0. I already see the “overreaction” take and it’s funny, if it was 1/8, 2/8 sure great but some nice ones gone. 0-fer. Now Sydney has to think of his way to save face while taking credit.

Did you forget about Cleveland and Wesley?

I think at this point the majority of the bitching is about the “reporting” and OTF and IT clearly had no idea about Wesley.

Look, Dale Cooper is an amazing lawman and all around human being. He’s willing to embrace a cosmos far greater than himself and that he’ll never fully understand. And he doesn’t forget to appreciate the simple things in life, like a cup of coffee or Heather Graham’s backend.

But he’s not winning a fight against the Kwisatz fucking Haderach.

No doubt, and while I appreciate you and your mad worm riding skills, I'm just saying:

At the risk of sounding like the sky is falling. It does suck to miss on all of these guys.

When I said that on Friday I about got run out on a rail. I guess we hit a consensus tipping point. I still believe that we will get some flips and that in the end all will be right and good, but yeah it does suck to be second place over and over again.

It is in every top player’s best interest to feign interest in Texas even if they aren’t interested, because it drives up their nil deal. Get used to disappointment. But many times it will be a fake loss.

We’ve got our asses handed to us every single summer on the recruiting trail since Sark has been here. Folks are desperate. Have patience.

At what point ($) does a player not pay attention to a money amount and just say, “fuck it….I’m going to Texas”, even if they don’t get paid as much as another school offered?   Even if they don’t get the up-front $$$, what’s the premium that being at Texas gives them, in the long run, potentially?  Hope that makes sense.

Assuming Guervil and Carlton commit, if getting potentially the best dline class in the country is UT getting their ass handed to them I'm down for that next year also.

If so then this linebacker class is going to be pretty average in a year where we needed to go big? I guess Rouse?

I like Okpala’s tape a lot. Looks like an ideal MLB to me

Saban got a “Saban discount” for players going to Alabama for years. We don’t have the track record to sell that yet…but we’re pretty close. Put double digits into the draft again this season and that is a sales pitch. That being said that might be a hell of a task this year.

Muhammad, taffe, Hill, goosby, the transfer TE, who else?

We can outbid nearly anyone. BUT we have a salary structure. It's why you see roster retention here. The Fausi recruitment is a great example. OU paid a lot. We weren't willing to blow up our roster dynamics for him, rightfully so.

So how did we get Terry? I'm genuinely curious. Do they make exceptions if they think someone is a can't miss prospect?

Also have to keep in mind we have one of, if not the most, stacked and deep rosters in the country right now with not a ton of seniors/4th year guys. Guys like Goosby may go pro after the season, but they just as easily could not if they don't have the 1st round grade type of season. Sark has to budget for keeping the team he wants after this season, and that should be almost everyone. Most of the transfers he brought in are 2 year guys too unless they just blow up this season.

He's stacking the DL and is on the verge of stacking the OL if he lands Ojo and Turntine. The rest will fall into place later, but these guys right now are "shoot your shots" kind of recruits. Freaking out now acting like we have aggy or sooner roster is just dumb.

Wisner, Baxter (assuming he plays enough), Trey Moore, DJ Campbell, DeAndre Moore, and Bouwmeester would be my predictions.

Other potentials are Guilbeu, one of the interior transfer lineman, McDonald (Vogel keeps hyping him up) or Derek Williams having a career year, and lastly maybe a late date three pick for Burke if he has a solid year. Forgot to mention Brad Spence. Maybe he has another solid blitzing year at linebacker.

Texas isn’t landing Atkinson. It’s a nice fantasy, but that shit ain’t happening.

There you go. Send CTJ 9.95 please. He's more plugged in than any of the blowhard clickbait dipshits. Also understands our monetary structure. There's some interview that Sark alludes to it with culture, etc. I'll take 30% cut CTJ 😉

Every summer is the same weeping and gnashing of teeth. I try not to pay attention to the recruiting experts, but it can be difficult not to be suckered in, sigh.

Anyway, putting things into perspective, heavens forbid, I went back and looked a little at last years class through June, July, and August.

Through June 30, Texas had 10 commits total, TX/OOS ratio = 7/3, avg. 3.4*

In July Texas signed 4 additional. TX/OOS ratio = 3/1, avg. 3.75*     Cumulative Team total = 10/4, 3.5*

In August additional 4 signed, TX/OOS ratio = 2/2, avg. 4.5*    Cumulative Team total = 12/6, 3.72*

So any blind fool can see we're currently ahead of last years schedule. And keep in mind Texas has signed 3 specialty recruits in Long Snapper, Kicker, and Punter.

Yes, I know, pearls before swine.

I should add, unless someone commits today, this year through June 30, TX/OOS ratio = 8/7, avg. 3.8*

Texas is 0 for its last six in recruiting.

Three of those players, at one time or another, felt like Texas leans: North Shore defensive back Chace Calicut, Georgia linebacker Zavier Griffin and New Jersey defensive tackle Damari Simeon.

So what happened between the two parties on the way to the altar?

With each it’s a different story. Calicut was drawn to the idea of playing corner. Griffin was somewhat miffed by the idea of the Horns recruiting Tyler Atkinson allegedly and had ties to Tuscaloosa. Simeon received a better NIL offer elsewhere.

But no matter the how of losing those recruits, the results - at least the current ones - remain the same.

So Texas fans will naturally look ahead to this week with some well placed trepidation. But there should be some excitement as well. Texas is favored to land three prospects this week - Kendal Guervil, Kosi Okpala and John Turntine.

The Horns clearly have some work to do elsewhere. Aledo wide receiver Kaydon Finley appears to favor Notre Dame. Pensacola defensive end Trenton Henderson seems to favor Florida or LSU.

Then there’s the following week where Texas must see where they’re at with the corner Samari “Smoke” Matthews and others.

As the month of June closes, I sense that Texas fans now understand what we meant when we said this is big boy recruiting. Indeed it is.

There's a lot of theories, but I'm of the opinion that Dougie Jones would have the best chance of winning. He is Cooper's good heart and childlike wonder distilled into a person, without any of the anger, arrogance, or vengefulness that Cooper occasionally displayed. Remember the scene in season 1 where Cooper has has Hawk and Harry help him use the "Tibetan method" to find clues - basically throwing rocks at bottles while he thinks about people? That's an example of Cooper trying to be like Dougie (even though Dougie didn't exist yet). Dougie is like a divining rod for fate and the forces that control the universe. So if any human from the Twin Peaks universe has a chance at beating Muad'Dib, it's Dougie. But if Dougie won, it would only be because that's what the universe wants to happen - Dougie has no will of his own. He's just vibing, going along with the flow, as a conduit for the forces of good. Tulpa Cooper is the opposite of this - he's all the bad things from Cooper distilled into a person. All the bad impulses without any of the restraint. He's more sophisticated than Dougie - smarter, driven, capable, forcing things to follow his will. But he's at odds with the universe, and for that reason is always fated to fail.

That's why, to me, Cooper is such a compelling character. He has the forces of good and evil within him, but is aware of himself and those forces. By acknowledging them, he is able to act thoughtfully and choose which side of himself he'll allow to win. And he consistently chooses the side of good, even when it hurts him or forces him to forgo something he wants. This stands in stark contrast with many of the other characters, most notably Laura Palmer, who is an excellent foil for Cooper. She has immense good and evil within her, but he doesn't know herself and consistently indulges those evil instincts. Which allows her to fall under Bob's sway. That's also why she's such a prize to an entity like Bob - she has so much good in her, which makes her suffering and self loathing when she's evil that much greater. To Bob, that's the best form of sustenance (i.e., garmonbozia).

Edited by Park Gothic
Honestly, now that I think about it, I don't think Cooper and Paul would ever fight. They're both way too plugged in to the people around them to miss how similar their spirits are.

Getting myself back on track - I was listening to the most recent OTF livestream and Bobby kept saying that Calicut had committed to Texas but that it was a "private commitment" that didn't go public. So I'm guessing Calicut was one of Gerry's "hi" comments and it hasn't panned out. So now we're down to two silents who have yet to announce, am I remembering that correctly?

It's also frustrating that silent commitments still aren't worth shit, even with NIL deals on the table.

.As the month of June closes, I sense that Texas fans now understand what we meant when we said this is big boy recruiting. Indeed it is.

Lines like this piss me off.  Were we not doing Big Boy recruiting the last two years?  We were.  We just won more of the battles where Texas was the final one or two or three schools left.  This year we aren't.  It's not a huge thing as we still are sitting solid and we seem (based on the reporting) have a few players lined up that are leaning Texas for now who if we get we would all be ecstatic about.  So what else has changed:

I think losing Choice has had an impact.   I believe in prior years we had our #1 RB locked in by July 1, but it's not like I have gone off and confirmed that.  By all reports, Choice was a very good recruiter.

The Changing NIL Landscape.  - The change in NIL with the settlement and its impact this year has created a unique one-off.  Schools feel that to some extent NIL rules will be equalized this time next year so they are attempting to get in ahead of some of these changes and grandfather in things they think won't count against a cap/etc.  Also in general, Texas was ahead of the game with NIL and support along with a small handful of schools and now other schools are catching up.

I am still not worried in the slightest though because we should hit on a high enough number of elite players to have an elite class overall.  Second, I feel that the staff does an exceptional job at evaluation and some of the players we keep recruiting despite a commitment or circled back to after missing on an initial target (late bloomers or players committed to other schools out of the gate)  the last two years have been good.  I thought TyAnthony Smith, Kobe Black, and Wardell Mack when I was typing this, but truthfully I can't remember.  I'm sure someone in here will correct me if I am wrong.

Finally, the staff seems to do an exceptional job of evaluating its roster and finding a transfer player or two or three to lock down at positions of need.  So even if we have a hole, we seem to do an exceptional job of finding a transfer as the worst case scenario.

Looks like on 6/19 he confirmed there were 3 outstanding hi's, and he added 3 more hi's during the last official visit weekend. One of those was Calicut and I'm assuming Vodney Cleveland was another.

So if Richard Wesley was a hi then that leaves 3 that haven't been announced, if he wasn't then there are 4 left.

RB recruiting was bound to suck this time of year just like DT recruiting did last year at this time. The coaching change has an impact. But if Baxter bounces back and the RBs have a good season it'll come around by signing day. There's also the logjam right now as Baxter is mostly likely going to be back for the 2026 season. So unless Wisner has a good enough season to go pro it's a crowded room.

Someone got way the fuck out over their skis when reporting on the current state of our recruiting. Gerry, CJ and Bobby definitely deserve to catch some flak for this one because they hyped this summer recruiting season way too much.

They do this every single year if you'll pay attention.  Take anything they say up through the start of the season with a grain of salt.

They have a much more realistic outlook once we get down to a couple of targets and flip season
