Look, as a CA resident I can see why others say “it’s not fair” to have a blue state like CA have a relatively fair process for drawing political districts while red states like FL and TX have criminally been gerrymandered. But the bigger “big picture” is that I don’t want to live in a state drawn to the benefit of/by/for a single political party. Giving the Democrats that much power in CA wouldn’t be good for our state.

Even with these fair districts 75-80% of the CA congressional delegation will be Dems. The answer shouldn’t have to be go back to gerrymandering the shit out CA/CO/WA etc. districts. Maybe the Dem party in states like TX and FL should stop sucking so fucking hard.

How would rigging the maps to have more Democrats in the United States House of Representatives negatively affect California? Your Reps don't decide what happens in California beyond the effects of deciding what happens federally.

The commission draws both congressional and state legislative maps.

Fox’s coverage of violent crime dropped after the midterms

Weekday violent crime segments decreased by 50% in the week of the election compared to the weekly average since Labor Day.

Spoiler
  • Fox News significantly decreased its volume of violent crime coverage in the week of the midterms, down 63% from the week prior.

The network averaged 141 weekday violent crime segments per week from Labor Day through the Friday before the election; in the week of the midterms, Fox aired 71 weekday violent crime segments — a decrease of 50% compared to the prior average.

Fox was open in its strategy of using violent crime as a political cudgel against Democrats throughout the midterms. Driven in part by Fox host Tucker Carlson's calls for Republicans to run on the issue, the network engaged in a monthslong campaign to tie Democrats and the Biden administration to violent crime, often by highlighting specific incidents in “Democratic cities” and blaming progressive criminal justice reform for individual violent crimes.

  • Image showing Fox crime segments dropping after the midterm elections
  • In the lead-up to the midterms, Fox averaged 141 weekday violent crime segments per week from Labor Day through the Friday before the election. The two weeks prior to Election Day, those starting October 24 and October 31, featured the highest number of weekday violent crime segments of the period studied: 187 and 193 segments, respectively. That coverage dropped dramatically during the week of the election, which had just 71 weekday violent crime segments.

In the week after the election, Fox’s crime coverage has ticked back up a bit as stories about the tragic shooting at the University of Virginia and multiple killings at the University of Idaho entered the news cycle — but the coverage was notably less focused on painting Democratic cities as crime-infested. Thus far this week, Fox has aired 74 violent crime segments in three days, which is still notably fewer than in the weeks prior to the midterms.

Fox’s breathless political coverage of violent crime during the midterm period often ignored key context, such as the reality that crime statistics from red states were higher than those of blue states and that Democrats across the country at multiple levels of government made efforts to fund law enforcement and curtail violent crime. Instead, these segments often focused on attacking progressive district attorneys and candidates across the country.

This initial drop-off in violent crime coverage immediately following the midterm elections bears resemblance to another long-forgotten Fox News midterm narrative: “migrant caravans.” The network went all in fearmongering about “migrant caravans” in the weeks leading up to the 2018 midterms — only to completely drop the subject right after.

  • Methodology

  • Media Matters searched our internal database of all original, weekday programming on Fox News Channel (shows airing from 6 a.m. through midnight) for segments that analysts determined to be about violent crime in general or specific violent crimes from September 5, 2022, through November 16, 2022.

We counted segments, which we defined as instances when violent crime in general or a specific violent crime was the stated topic of discussion or when we found significant discussion of violent crime in general or of a specific violent crime. We defined significant discussion as instances when two or more speakers in a multitopic segment discussed violent crime in general or a specific violent crime with one another.

The redistricting commissions in California and other states were enacted by ballot measures, not the normal legislative process. Voters in those states would need to repeal them. It is highly unlikely that even Dem voters would do that.

SCOTUS could rule them unconstitutional next spring. That is the only realistic way they can be undone.

Put it back in the next ballot for the voters to decide, I think it could pass and oust most of the Rs there

I've never seen anyone advocate punishing the father for abortion. They only believe the mother is the murderer, and even then some evil doctor probably tricked her into it.

Father is involved in more ways than one tho. He should be included in their psychotic views.

This is the part that bugs me the most - not because it's the most important part (women's rights certainly is), but because it doesn't get talked about nearly enough. Why are men not complicit here? Why are men's lives not changed when they can't control their ejaculations (or chose not to) but the woman has to now forego college, her career, her life plan? In the end, the one in control of the situation is the guy with the penis and the sperm but hardly any responsibility is on their shoulder. If you want to outlaw abortions, outlaw being a deadbeat whore of a man too.

Not the right thread, I know.

Republicans punishing men for abortions. Oh man, thank you for my first good laugh today.

What's the saying? "If men gave birth, there'd be free abortion clinics in 7-Eleven."

As always, it's because it's about the control of women and not abortion

You mean a platform of killing social security and medicare didn't work?
Good job Rick Scott, you crook!

Any chance the GOP will take this as an opportunity to enact policies that actually help their constituents rather than eternal fear mongering? No?

Good for Dems then I guess.

Quote

A Chandler Republican recently elected to the Arizona House of Representatives says that she will not cast her vote on any bill unless the 2022 election is redone.

Liz Harris, recently elected to represent Legislative District 13 which encompasses much of Chandler, issued the statement on Instagram and her campaign website saying in part "it has become obvious that we need to hold a new election immediately."

Quote

Despite winning her own election, Harris alleges that there were "clear signs of foul play" which necessitated her demands. There has been no evidence of this.

"Machine malfunctions" were cited as one such sign. On election day, 60 of the 223 polling places in Maricopa County saw issues with their ballot printers, leading to some ballots not being counted immediately.

The issue was resolved within a few hours, and election officials say that they were able to ensure that every legal ballot was successfully counted.

Quote

Harris also questioned the fact that Treasurer Kimberly Yee (R) won her election with a greater count of votes than any other candidate.

"How can a Republican State Treasurer receive more votes than a Republican Gubernatorial or Senate candidate?" Harris asked.

In Arizona, voters are allowed to cast a split ticket. This means that they don't have to vote exclusively along party lines. Yee also received more votes than any Democratic candidate running for office.

It's not the first time that Harris has been involved in trying to overturn the results of an election.

Quote

After losing to incumbents Jennifer Pawlik (D) and Jeff Weninger (R) in the 2020 general election, Harris began a "Grassroots Canvass Report" to investigate baseless allegations of voting errors in order to decertify the results of both the state legislature and presidential elections.

The report falsely claimed to have uncovered some 173,000 “lost” votes and 96,000 “ghost votes” in a private door-to-door canvassing effort, supposedly rendering the 2020 election in Maricopa County “uncertifiable.”

Maricopa County election officials and outside experts said Liz Harris used “quasi-science" in her canvas of the 2020 election and her findings were "inaccurate."

Harris's canvassing report initially appeared in the Cyber Ninjas 'audit' draft report but was later removed from the final version after it was revealed that the DOJ had warned Harris against door-knocking

What a weird paragraph this is. Are there any states where voters are required to vote exclusively along party lines?

I viewed it as more of a dig at the dumb rationale being pushed by the Arizona candidates.  "HOW COULD ONE REPUBLICAN GET MORE VOTES THAN ANOTHER?!?!"

"Here's how that could happen, you dumb bitch" was the subtext I read.

Sometimes you need to state the obvious when explaining something to dumb people.

She seems like a complete moron.

But in bigger picture fairness to AZ, voting the way the state has voted in the last two elections is a massive shift compared to history.

Yeah. What a lot of people forget is that the election is usually decided or over by the end of election night ( 2004,2008,2012) and Arizona voted redder and wasn’t such a pivotal state back then. Since Arizona is solidly purple now and several other states have gone more red or more blue, Arizona is getting the spotlight now. Same with Georgia.

Still waiting eagerly for that first Trafalgar poll. Warnock should be the heavy favorite. National dems should realize how bad the senate map is next cycle and republicans motivation should be low because the seat isn’t deciding the senate majority.

In the Bible they caught a woman in the act of committing adultery but only she was brought before Jesus to be stoned. No mention of anything happening to the man.

i would bet real money at pretty high odds that warnock wins this.  i just don't see how it is possible otherwise

Since they can’t take back control of the senate anymore, you have to figure a lot of Republican voters are going up stay home. Still, it’s going to be an embarrassment how many people still go out and vote for that brain dead moron. If I knew anyone who voted for Herschel I’d give them shit about it for the rest of their life.

If you’re a GOP voter,  voting for Herschel while you’re already at the polling center to vote for Kemp is one thing, but actually making the drive up to the polling center JUST to vote for Herschel should be much much harder. Especially if you’ve heard the guy talk for a few minutes.

The same way a Democratic gubernatorial or Senate candidate can receive more votes than a state treasurer candidate?

It’s like they still aren’t sure that Georgia republicans know that Herschel won’t be voting based on his own thoughts and opinions, and that’s the most important message from now until the runoff election.

Don't worry, Ted and Lindsay will tell him what to do. So vote!
