He needs to learn to protect himself. Got hurt on a first down run. No need to take that hit

I was at the game and haven’t dived in to any highlights but in live action it look late and intentional forearm to the back of the head. Anything mentioned about that? Of course I was doing my best Cooter Brown impersonation by then…

No, not at all. Leading with shoulder, forearm, etc is still targeting.

Only on a defenseless player.  A ball carrier running and diving forward isn’t defenseless.  The only targeting on a non-defenseless player is if struck with the crown of the helmet.

Arch was not targeted on that play.

I didnt even realize there was a defenseless vs runner debate raging. Just caught up.

Interesting distinction in the quoted rules. I feel like we are missing something, because I find it hard to believe a defender can launch at a runner and knock their ass out with a forearm shiver and not draw a flag.

Anthony Hill literally did that a few games back and no flag was thrown.

Explain.  1st and 10, and he's gained 8-9.  Is that extra yard worth losing your QB?

The QB is down as soon as he initiates the slide.  So he would have been marked down around the 18 yard line. He was balling and trying to get the first down and not leave it to our short yardage offense.

When you dive forward for additional yardage, it's not considered a "slide". Consequently, Arch wasn't a "defenseless player" by rule. The officials could've called the hit "unnecessary roughness", but targeting isn't appropriate for this play.

Arch may look like a goofy fucker, but Pat Mahomes he is not.  He ain't getting that call.

Reference pages FR-97 and FR-98 of the linked 2025 NCAA Football Rule Book for a complete definition of Targeting. To search a PDF, open the file and use the "Find" command by pressing Ctrl+F (Windows) or Command+F (Mac). Type your search term into the box that appears and use the "Next" and "Previous" buttons to navigate the results.

It's too long for me to post it here. tl/dr for most

Well, the play where he got his bell rung he dove head first, so maybe they need to talk to Arch about that and not Sark.  He does seem to slide more often than he did before, but on that play he put his head out there for the double whammy.

He dove forward not down, if he had dove down (think headfirst slide into second) it would have been different.

No clue what this dude is saying but the video is what I was after

I think Arch made a terrible decision, and it's 50/50 he'll play against Vandy.  If he doesn't play, we'll lose.  Really bad decision.  The idea that he has a BIGGER chance of getting concussed if he slides is nuts.  Surly gonna surly.

I'm not saying Caldwell is anywhere near better than Arch...but I don't think Arch not playing means they lose either.

He definitely hit him with his helmet. It was a football play, and not malicious imo, but his helmet hit him in the back of helmet.

The hit to the back of Arch’s head by the defensive lineman as he was going to the ground, accelerated his fall and head contact to the ground, probably increasing the severity of the concussion….absolutely should have been called targeting.

I think Caldwell gives us just as good of a chance to win as Arch. He has less talent but better decision making (I think) and probably better accuracy.

I don't understand the rule. It always seems subjective when called. That said, I hope Arch  comes out with comic book super powers from his Scateboo-boo.

Arch isn’t playing this week.

He'll play if he can pass the test. He needs to put the star in the star hole - not the hexagaon, the star hole. That's a very difficult test for many.

Until he can do that, he's still on the protocol.
