Arch Manning: Doing his best JAG impression to fool scouts

I still can't decide if that TD throw was a bad throw that got lucky to be caught or purposely put in that location to avoid the defender.

It was poor fundamentals. Flat footed, no anticipation. He aimed it there and probably made it harder than it needed to.

I have very little confidence he’ll overcome this during this year. He’s not learning with more reps, he’s regressing. And SEC play he’ll regress a lot if he’s not able to throw a football.

What kind of pillow does Arch have? There's your problem. The fucking pillow. And that's Sark's fault all the way. If Sark wasn't calling the plays, he could notice things like pillows.

In amongst this Wild Speculation Thread was this important post above. I never would have guessed that Arch is under more pressure than any other SEC QB.

Just  anecdotally, it seemed like he’s had plenty of time to throw quite a bit. We all know the OL is shaky, but this stat shows it’s way more shaky than I realized. Arch has missed guys badly with plenty of time to throw, but maybe the poor OL play is making him look worse than he is.

OR, we design a number of plays to get Arch out of a shaky pocket, on the move, or misdirection plays to expose an over pursuing defense.  Can I get one GD bootleg.  Can we get receivers in the flat.  Screens.  Something to get the ball out quickly, gain a few yards, and set up a few 3rd and shorts.

At this point if feels so clear he has the yips. I'd guess that his family would think the same.

I expect everyone around him to be proactive on this, whether it's having him talk to a sports psychologist or other athletes that have gone through something similar. The question will be how long it takes to get him right.

Wait until you find out that every game Texas has lost ever was because the refs screwed up or were getting paid or were told by the league office or the tv networks to make certain calls.

Also any team we don’t like that wins a game against any other opponent not named Texas only won because of the refs.

These are the facts.  And they are undisputed.

Our games are much better officiated without Big12 interference. It’s night and day and backed up by statistically significant numbers between 2013-2023. The last year and a half has been a revelation. It’s a myth that the anti-UT bias during this time is a myth.

I'm assuming that is another PFF number, so I'll take it with a grain of salt.

The OL ain't great, but it has been adequate in pass protection, and I rarely see Arch running for his life. If anything, he has created some self-pressure by bailing too early on reads.

sure but in the portal / nil age, UT having even an average OL is a red flag. staff / gm failure to identify need and talent

I think he has the "yips". Check out this story about former Wisconsin QB Joel Stave and his case of the yips. I could totally see this being the case.

Quote

"Maybe it begins the next morning, with the simplest drill at a summer practice. No helmets, no pads, no spectators in the crowd. Receivers lined up, running simple 10- to 12-yard outs. The bullet you're used to firing wobbles toward the target. A second pass, and the ball smacks the turf a few feet in front of a different receiver. You shake it off. Everyone has bad days."

Three google quickies:

Why don't quarterbacks bench press?

The reason the barbell bench press has been labelled a “dangerous” exercise for quarterbacks is because the barbell locks you into an 'internally rotated' position (pronated grip) and your hands cannot move freely (like they can with dumbells).Feb 22, 2012

Why does Tom Brady not lift weights?

Tom Brady doesn't run, block, or tackle so he doesn't need the strength of other players. His exercises are for flexibility. Since he only thinks and throws he has been able to avoid serious injury. Clearly, a person can be in good shape without weight lifting and not everyone needs it.Oct 27, 2021
What exercises should quarterbacks not do?

What Exercises Should Quarterbacks Avoid?
  • The Barbell Bench Press. While it's true than any athlete with restricted shoulder mobility or stability can get an injury while benching, quarterbacks are particularly at risk since they throw so often. ...
  • Biceps Curls. ...

If you are referencing a specific movie, you tend to name the actors/actresses from that actual movie.
Rene Russo & Cheech Marin were in the fucking movie, not Seth Rogan and Tits McGee.

Remember, these kids are really into their bodies, as well as their girlfriend's bodies. They want to look good, and at that age they can bulk up fast. The real problem with the wrong kind of lifting is not that it can screw up your agility for a few hours, which it definitely can, but in trying to do what you're used to doing effortlessly, say throw a deep pass... you do that with tightened, bulked up muscles, and you can tear and permanently injure tissue, especially tendons. Things just won't work like they should and there may be no going back.

I was a little surprised to read that Brady apparently never lifted weights, but it makes sense. Almost never injured.

Then again, why do you think players "stretch" before a game - to avoid injuries. Do QBs stretch? Hope so, but if they decide to skip the slow warm up and let one fly...

Arch apparently stretches out both shoulders 18,000 times a day.

We are stating to blame this on his weightlifting regiment? Which presumably hasn't changed since he got here?

We saw that he has all the tools last year, live action, against the same talent he has seen in the last two games. I won't pretend to know why, but I can officially rule out some barbell lifts.

Dude is a starting QB for a helmet school, is on tv and all over social media constantly, has a legendary last name, and millions in NIL money.

He can look like the kid from Goonies that was locked in the basement.  He’s still going to date 10’s.

If the Peach Bowl refs had been XII, Taaffe gets called for targetting and we likely lose. I'm not saying that was clearly not targetting, but if any call was "controversial" we got the short end with XII refs.

The why doesn't matter. it really doesn't. If it was fixable, Sark would have fixed it after Arch missed a slew of open recevers in Columbus. It has only gotten worse.

We all know if he wasn't named Manning, he wouldn't start against SHSU. This would be the tune-up game for Caldwell, then he would have 2 weeks of practice with the ones before UF.

The Arch/Lagway suckfest in Gainesville will be legendary for all the wrong reasons.

It feels like we dont use the middle of the field. We constantly have WR open in the middle but rarly go there except on seam routes and deep posts.  I dont think this is an Arch thing, same thing happened with Ewers.  We don't like to use the middle and defenses we play know that.

You mean like the first play of the game against OSU when he threw it 7 yards in front of a wide open Wingo?

That was just about the saddest TD celebration I’ve ever seen. It looked forced with just a few O linemen around him, and Arch looked disappointed he didn’t throw for it. I couldn’t see for sure on TV but I think the receivers just walked off the field.

Probably because he never should’ve been running it. If he’s tackled at the 1, the clock rolls to half time and we get no points. It was undoubtedly a quick pass play where if it’s not open you throw it out the back of the end zone. He was likely told to be decisive and not fuck around in the pocket.

Or the play he threw the pick one, a roll out with a quick throw to Livingstone in the flat that he turned down

Hey, regarding your first complaint about the WR and TE blocking, I think you've identified the wrong problem. Wingo stayed with his man, #21, but Endries didn't turn up to block the right guy, #48. Watch it again.

Stroh ranks 810 of 838 guards for run-blocking??? W...T...F is he still doing on the field.

Embarrassing cut-block by Goosby, who is usually technically sound in pass pro.

Neither swoops or GG ever had a game as good as his SJSU game. And he wasn’t even good. That’s my point. Yesterday was absolutely not the worst QB play you’ve seen at Texas unless you just didn’t watch the GG and Swoops years at all. GG threw 5 fucking picks in a game. He had multiple games where he looked worse than we saw yesterday. Swoops had several games where he could not complete a pass except to the other team.
He sucks. That’s true. But seriously get a grip.

Arch is so bad he can’t even throw it to the other team.

He missed them completely, including on the very first play of the game. OSU didn't have to do anything.

Yeah OSU wasn’t in his head before the game started.

Look at the video above. His mechanics are atrocious. In all but the touch pass out to Wingo he is holding the ball around his midsection, then “winds up” violently around his right waist area (like where a holster would be) and just rips the ball out of there, side arm or 3/4 arm. It like a violent spasm before the throws as hard as he can with poor mechanics.

I had the yips with my driver for 2 months over the summer. I could do no right with a club that was usually my most consistent. The more I tried, the worse I got. Range sessions were disasters.

But for the last month I’ve been shooting 80 or below. It wasn’t the swing. It was the take back for the backswing. It was the spasm of it, and then switching direction violently. Trying too had. Choking the grip. Once I just started easily taking the club back, relaxing on the change of direction, and not trying to murder the ball, and just simply playing free, the results changed dramatically. The easier the swing, the better the drive. I hit one 292 last week. In June I was hitting the ladies tee box markers.

Arch needs to calm the fuck down out there and play free. Ball up around the shoulder, secured with two hands, feet underneath him, nice easy lead to where the receiver is going to be, giving him a chance to catch and run. Just breathe.

Also 5mg of THC helps.

They both mess up. Wingo's problem as a run blocker is that he is afraid to engage. Don't know if he's worried about contact or getting called for holding or what the deal is. He stays with his man, but makes no effort to block him. Endries also isn't a good blocker and also tries to block 21. There are a LOT of plays where guys are trying to block the same guy and it isn't a designed double team. Wingo should, for lack of a better term, dance with 21. Go with him where he wants to go, which is the outside, and Endries needs to cut up and block 48.

edit: When I talk about effort in blocking for skill position players I want Sark, Chris Jackson, Chad Scott and Monkey Man to show the RBs, WRs and TEs this play this week. Watch Aaron Jones (#33) on this play. He goes out on a delayed route, but as soon as he turns he sees McCarthy scrambling so he gets his ass up field and plants a DB in the dirt. THAT is the effort you should show in blocking reps.

Hell, my driver was absolute dogshit just yesterday.

In the past, I've had the wedge yips for less than full shots. Anything I had to finesse was shanked, topped, or chunked. Very frustrating and debilitating.

Ironically same shit happened to me with the driver.  Even at the range I was ripping everything and couldn’t hit shit.  Yesterday at Wailea Gold I was rocking north of 280-300  just like you slowed down  checked grip basic fundamentals

like that article said. Maybe he needs a closed session shorts T shirts. Him and Wingo just play catch. Shoot the shit. Run some Routes. Have fun

Arch needs a new routine. Maybe he needs to get black out drunk and sleep with a big girl the night before the game. Wake up so hungover that he is unable to think vs SJSU and just plays football.

If it really is neuropsychological (the yips) then continuing to throw Manning out there before he gets treatment is actually harmful to his development.

This. Let him take a break and to do so I think the staff should just announce he has some random physiological injury to help save him from the media fallout. If he personally decides to talk about it later he can, but it’s up to him.
