I'm still a fan.  Walz seems like that cool old guy on the block.  The opposite of get off my lawn guy.

That does look fun. Also, reminds me why my knees are fucked.

Is it still conventional wisdom you should wait as long as you can before getting titanium knees?

Good ol’ bumper sleddin’

Well he had a good run.

Nice that a scandal can still take a politician down. And he didn't even commit the fraud, it was just committed under his watch.

Hope we find somebody good to replace him.

Hell I wish plenty of our other Democratic politicians would step aside once they become a liability.

The fact that an old-school, likable regular white man like Walz can be targeted and destroyed by the right-wing should concern everyone regarding 2028 election (if it happens).

It's not gonna be a simple as "we need a straight white male" as the Presidential candidate. We are past any rational thinking with the Right. Things are moving so fast that BIden's 2020 win feels like decades ago. MAGA will go hard after anyone and it will work with their base.

The current president was found guilty of fraud during the last election. Penalty was $250 million. I’m don’t even think there were any calls for him to drop out (obviously, that was just one of his many crimes for which he had been charged).

HE STOLE FROM A FUCKING CHILDREN'S CANCER CHARITY.

There are no rules anymore, and it's stupid as fuck for Dems to play as if there were.

He fucked up though. He let some big fraud happen under his watch. Now granted I don't live in Minnesota so I don't know the details. I don't know the extent he personally was responsible but the buck has to stop somewhere.

This is like watching Texas get called for holding after the other team has held on all 38 dropbacks without a flag.

This “rules for one party and none for the other” shit has to stop.

Yeah well Walz isn't going to jail. He is taking personal responsibility and not wanting to be the reason the Republicans win the governorship of Minnesota.

giphy.webp

I would typically agree with the above but I think this is good for the party if Klobuchar runs. It does send a bad signal that the RW messaging apparatus works, but this gives Dems the seat again. Dems are pussies but this is outmaneuvering them a little bit more than usual.

Yeah well I would rather Schumer step down because of his repeated failures, but what are you going to do?

Seriously, though.

That type of government program fraud is pretty rampant everywhere, including right here in redass, MAGA Mayes Middleton, Texas.

This is a complete right-wing con-job. A Chris Rufo hoax. A veritable witch hunt.

He is fraud in human form. If anyone actually cared about fraud then they wouldn’t support Mr. Human Fraud. But it’s all just an act.

I am sure the Mississippi governor will be targeted and resign any minute now for similar issues ..

It's important to pick your battles

1) There's no downside to the party with Walz stepping down. Klobuchar is set up nicely to take the reins and the Democrats will still maintain a trifecta in Minnesota moving forward. If Walz stays put the issue drags out longer and longer heading into elections, and you risk Democrats in the state house and senate seeing their election chances affected.

2) Like it or not, this was a valid scandal. Public funds were misappropriated, and inquiries were stonewalled by people in the state govt due to racism allegations. Walz himself may not have been involved, but when you're the governor the buck stops with you. It's unfortunate but it is what it is. The important thing is that with Walz stepping down, any fallout is contained to him and the GOP can tilt at windmills for as long as they like with no real impact.

Dem Minnesota politicians are terminally nice. Walz and Al Franken both blanched after successful swift boating.

FWIW, this is why right wing media wins.

They can bring an issue where NOBODY knows the concrete details to the forefront of the national conversation and create a narrative purely based on vibes.

I agree with most of this, but I think this is going to play very well for Republicans with the segment of voters who aren't lockstep with either party and who don't look at this stuff any deeper than the headlines. The Republicans are going to shout, "See, all the Democrats do is accuse us of foul play, and we always walk away from it unscathed, because it's always a nothingburger witch hunt. Meanwhile, look at them cheating behind closed doors at the same time."

Whether it's a huge deal or not, the Republicans are going to get a lot of mileage out of this.

Walz was basically done anyway. He wasn't going to be able to run for President or VP after being a loser. He had one more term as governor and then he was done right? So it wasn't like he had some big political career ahead of him.

Franken on the other hand...

And all the Republicans have to do, and will continue to do, is deny any wrongdoing even when caught red-handed and pleading fucking guilty in court and shit like that.

Republicans, you ate the sprinkles!

"No we didn't."

It's fucking insane.

Trump can get away with it. We'll see how well this super power continues to work without him.

A side effect of this is that bringing the issue to the forefront of the national conversation also inevitably results in a ton of death threats against their political target and that target's family. I suspect that's the real reason behind this.

Senator Rick Scott, guilty of defrauding Medicare and Medicaid in the largest such fraud case in US history, is laughing at you.

Republicans can ass-rape a child while robbing a bank and lighting the Constitution on fire, and they face zero fucking consequences. Zero. None. Shit, it fucking GAINS them votes, because it shows how "alpha" they are -- they can literally get away with ANYTHING, don't you want tough people like that in charge?

Well yeah. That is the thing. Walz failed to stop a massive fraud. He wasn't the corrupt asshole doing the fraud himself which seems to be what Republicans do.

Exactly.

Being in the same state where fraud/a crime is committed? Disqualifying for a Dem.

ACTUALLY COMMITTING THE CRIME, REAPING THE BENEFITS, AND SHOWING NO REMORSE? It's a fucking necessary qualification to run for office as a Republican.

It's a goddamned kleptocratic party, and proudly so. Being able to do awful shit, not care about it, and totally get away with it, is a fucking FEATURE, not a bug.

The GOP doesn't care about the truth or morals. Biden gets blamed for letting Epstein get murdered under his watch even though Trump was President. Biden gets accused of strong arming the social media companies in the 2020 election even though he wasn't even the President and had zero power. Trump has been convicted of personal fraud and the GOP doesn't care. and he's earning billions in being President. They don't care.

You're wrong. They care. THEY LIKE IT. There is no greater display of raw power, of "I can do whatever I want and nobody can stop me" than committing unethical, criminal shit in broad daylight. It's a big middle finger and "wadda ya gonna do about it?" to everyone else. It's the bully walking up to you in the cafeteria, taking the chocolate milk off your tray with everyone watching, grinning, and walking off with it as nobody does a fucking thing.

It's a morally bankrupt, evil enterprise from top to bottom. It will either be ended, or it will be the end of this Republic. Those are the two options, and we're already well underway towards option 2, with not even a molecule of movement towards option 1.

The ones screaming about how Walz let this happen on his watch damn sure can't rely on facts. Or that a white woman was the ringleader, and she was convicted last spring.

I'll have more to say later, and a third term was going to be a hard lift no matter what else might have happened, but I'm fucking pissed.

The bullies won. Fuck.

Update: Nate Silver is still a moron.

Kamala loses with Shapiro as well, and the dangers with anti-Semitism in this country would be even worse. I mean, someone set his house on fire when he wasn't even on the ticket!

They won't admit it, but I don't think the Republicans are happy today at all. The goal was to weaken Walz to ensure that he would lose. Now we're going to get the biggest non-incumbent gubernatorial landslide in the history of Minnesota.

I agree and think for all the D's upset about the inequality of consequences, it's a net positive for D's in MN and USA.

Walz was not great politically despite us trying to make his "dad memes" vibe a thing.

The only state that hasn't voted R in a presidential election in over 50 years is going to elect a D governor.... somebody call the NY times.
