I still can't believe they didn't call batter interference on the throw.  She walks across the plate during the steal.  regardless what happens with the ump you can't have the batter walking across the plate on a steal.

No, they don't.

Baseball should get rid of it. This demonstrates why.

Idk. I feel like they instituted it in MLB because pitchers almost never fucked it up anymore. I can see both arguments.

I’m surprised they even reviewed it and didn’t just call it a dead ball from the ump interference, moved the runner back to 1st, play on

2024 NPOY runner up got the better of the 2024 NPOY

I stopped EVERYTHING I was doing to stand and watch that at bat and was not disappointed.
ESPN was saying she hasn't hit all world series and I was like .... "just wait a sec".

Haha, check out this fucking caption.

This is why we shouldn’t put someone on 2nd base in extras, in MLB.

Anything can happen.

And the same people who determined we had a foot inside the basepath from some awkward camera angle.

Obstruction rule WILL be changed.

And in the 7th, that batter blocked the catcher from throwing to second. That shoulda ended the game.

Can’t it not be the called to end the game because the runner didn’t actually end up attempting a steal because they called umpire interference, negating the throw? Logically, batter interference shouldn’t apply there then, right?

I agree it was batter interference, but it seems like it doesn’t apply once they negate the steal attempt due to umpire interference.

Pussy ass umps were too cowardly to end the game by making the right call. She was literally standing directly in front of Atwood during the throw. You can’t get more obstructiony than that.

Reese 100% did that on her own....no way Mike gives her that green light, right?

I think she was totally surprised that Canady threw the “intentional” ball over the plate, then did it again….now Reese is thinking “You throw another “ball” across the plate, and I’m swinging at that mother”……and she did!

this.  It was clearly batter interference.  But the runner would have just returned to 1st, which she did any way because of the ump interference.  So a stupid challenge IMO.

The worst call of the night was not calling for batter interference at the end. She was STANDING on the fucking plate.

I think that would have been the call absent the ump interference.

Something that is underrated right now. Mike's call to have the runner steal second during the intentional walk. It would've been easy to just leave her at first...Reese is being walked anyway, what's the difference? But the fact that she stole second during the intentional walk means that she was able to score on Reese's "fuck your intentional walk" swing.

Kind of. But that’s a no brainer.

Wild pitch or passed ball were very real possibilities. You don’t just stand on first base waiting for 4 pitches if they are giving you 2nd on the first pitch.

She pretty much said that postgame. After 2 of those hittable “balls” she knew a third was coming

I think she was pissed off they were asking her to walk someone and she couldn't commit herself to it

She was fired up, and in her head she was probably saying, no way I'm giving in and lobbing four balls outside.  She couldn't commit to it.

"Million dollar arm and a 5 cent head..." 🤣

That’s not the rule. Batter interference calls the runner out. Umpire interference just sends the runner back.

I just don’t see how you can call both, because the steal attempt doesn’t actually occur if umpire interference is first. But that’s just my logic, not me reading a rule book.

Mendoza going on and on about the rule needing to change, but the rulebook is clear.  If the runner would have clearly been out, in the judgement of the umpire, no obstruction is called.  It's akin to uncatchable on PI in football.  The rule is fine.  Umps are fucking idiots, as we saw over and over tonight.

Canady ending up at Texas Tech might have been the best outcome possible for Texas. If she ended up on any above average hitting team they would be the national champions.

Agreed, but the series ain’t over yet. They still might win.

so here is the weird thing.  what happens if reese throws her out.  the ump interference kills the play?  the batter was on the plate even before the ump interference happened as well.

the ump interference was hurting Texas not Tech, as was the batter interference.  why should tech benefit from that?

No - with batter interference, batter is out, runner returns to base.  The rules discussion on air was a total mess.  No one in softball knows the rules of their own sport, even the umpires.  Just a total clusterfuck.

https://www.ncaapublications.com/p-4683-2024-and-2025-softball-rules-book.aspx

11.20.2 The batter shall not hinder the catcher or any other fielder from catching or throwing the ball by stepping out of the batter’s box, or intentionally hinder a player (for example, on a steal/pickoff throw or a play at home plate) while standing within the batter’s box.

EFFECT—Delayed dead ball is signaled. The defensive team shall choose either the result of the play or the batter is out and each base runner must return to the last base that, in the umpire’s judgment, was legally touched at the time of the interference. Exceptions: (1) If a base runner is advancing to home plate and there are fewer than two outs, the base runner, instead of the batter, is out. (2) If the catcher is not making a play on a base runner but the batter or umpire interferes with the catcher’s return throw to the pitcher and the base runner, consequently, advances safely, the umpire should suspend play and return each base runner to the base occupied at the time of the accidental interference.

They’re gonna upgrade their roster more in 2026 for one more run with Canady, no doubt about that.

So if I’m reading right we accept the strike out and interference gets called game over by rule

Ultimately I think you’re probably correct. Any batter interference would have been after the umpire interference, at which point the play is dead with the runner on 1st base.

That’s not how the idiot umps explained it though. I can’t rewatch but I’m almost certain they said “no batter interference”. All they had to do was come back out and say there’s no ruling needed on batter interference because the steal attempt never happened.

And the ump interference apparently results in a dead ball, so it's as if the batter interference never occurred.

When I worked for Texas Softball we'd regularly practice intentionally walking a batter.

Catcher would signal it and it was a 50 mph soft toss way off the plate.

The arrogance or ignorance of what Tech did tonight with our best hitter up was wild.

Why wouldn’t you be running on ball 4 of an intentional walk attempt?

Beth Mowens is the worst announcer in sports.  Worse than Galindo.  Just objectively terrible at her job in all aspects.

Also, I hope Mike gets public confirmation from the umps as to exactly why that was obstruction per the rulebook.
