Stocks edged lower Thursday after new data showed factory-gate inflation picking up, introducing fresh question marks over the outlook for interest rates.

The producer-price index showed prices rose by a much stronger-than-expected 0.9% in July, the largest monthly increase in more than three years.

A day earlier, futures markets suggested investors were highly confident the Federal Reserve would cut rates in September, after Tuesday’s reassuring consumer-price index. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had talked up a larger, 0.5 percentage-point cut.

But traders moved early Thursday to slightly pare bets on a September cut, CME Group data showed.

San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly, who favors lowering rates next month, pushed back Wednesday against the case for a jumbo cut. "I'm worried it would send off an urgency signal that I don't feel about the strength of the labor market," she said.

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee also signaled caution late Wednesday, flagging a jump in some services prices in the CPI report and saying the labor market remained solid.

It looks like Trump is going to be issuing CPI reports in future written in sharpie.   He will just skip the nerd stuff and cut right to the chase showing that no president has ever had better numbers.

That was his original solution for Covid, right. We had so many reported cases because we kept reporting them.

Hear me when I say this: It’s going to get so much worse

And he ran on lowering prices. Grocery prices specifically, as “groceries” was a word he supposedly coined.

Jesus this all sucks so much. I honestly don’t think I can follow any of this anymore without losing my fucking mind.

Once you lose your mind, it becomes kind of entertaining.

Haven't seen a fight challenge since the austin 360 days.   Besides the absolute stupidity of it, what are we gonna do now?  Try to throw our walkers at each other?

@StassneyHorn was trying to fight anyone who would show up to their local H‑E‑B just the other days. It’s the dog (fight) days of summer!

I hate the Stassney HEB.   The far west one is underrated.

Far West HEB is not underrated at all.  It's perfectly rated.  Higher-end, well-stocked, full of suburban yoga talent....but not as wide or adventurous a selection as other HEBs.  In many ways, I prefer the Great Hills HEB for all of those factors.  And for awesome, adventurous selection of groceries, the North Lamar and Rundberg location is fantastic.

Caveat: I haven't been in a fight at any of them.  Yet.

Are the tariffs factored in?

Yeah.  That's the point.  Frijoles priced +40% are still muy cheap.

And at .50 a box....even +40% on fideo is just fine.

yum...just put sopa de fideo on meal plan list, it's been a while!

I grew up on fideo seco:

mexican-style-noodles.jpg

Brown the noodles along with some diced onion to sautee.  Add 2 cups knorr chicken broth, cover and simmer till liquid is absorbed.  Top with a melty cheese, like chihuahua or oaxaca or mennonita.  Eat the whole damned thing, if you were teenage brisket.

Didn't grow up poor (or rich), but my folks sure as hell grew up on the lean side.  So lots of border struggle dishes were on the menu, at least when my mom (who went hungry as a kid sometimes) was fully in charge of the menu.

Anderson version was that with a margarita.  The one at 360 and 183 didn't give a shit that we were clearly 17.

Baby Acapulco on Riverside in the 1980's:

"Y'all look young, are you legal drinking age?"

"Yes ma'am, we are all 21 or older."

"OK, but 2 margs is the limit per person."

"That's fine."

<serves everyone a half dozen lethal margs>

Don't worry, the GOP will ignore the obvious reality of high prices in 2026 or 2028 - that is hard to explain away. The GOP will focus on other issues - ones in which the distortion of the reality is quite easy - LBGTQ, crime, Immigrants.

MAGA can't comprehend that we have broken trust with Canada who has fought by our side in every major conflict.  They can't make the connection between tariffs, the 51st state bullshit and completely broken trust.

I was up at the border (Blaine, WA) Tuesday for my Nexus card interview with CBSA (Canadian border agency), and wandered over to Peace Arch State Park afterwards. This park literally extends to the actual US-Canada border, which is a little ditch with a Canadian street on the other side, suburban houses on the other side of that. No fence, nothing but a sign telling you to report to the border station if you walk across. It has always been that way; BC and WA have interacted over this border since it was created (sports exchanges, shopping, friends/families on both sides). Seattle and Vancouver are two great cities to be in, and only around 2 hours apart. BC residents when polled say they have more in common with WA than with anywhere in Canada, by a wide margin, and if they polled WA residents we'd say the same about them compared to most of the USA.

Now, they're not coming over as much. Seattle is expecting 27% fewer Canadian visitors than last year. Whatcom County - the border county - is getting hammered because Canadians aren't coming over to shop. I wish they would - we voted for no leopards (Whatcom is D +20; Seattle is D +80) - but we're part of this country too and will have to take our medicine along with everyone else. Still pisses me off to no end, and likely pisses off the Canadians that, like us, used to cross the border with barely a thought.

Anyway, while I was walking along the border, a cyclist on the Canadian side said "Welcome to Fortress America!" "I'm truly sorry" I replied (I speak fluent Canadian, eh? Sorry.). He responded "Stupid," shook his head and rode off. There was nothing else to say.

And this feast over rice.

Our country is overflowing with violent illegals here to kill you and rape your wife and daughter but ICE has time to hang out outside a press conference? Cool.

I think the problem for your MIL is that he took benefits before FRA and from the little I've read on the subject part of the criteria for survivor's benefits is that he had to have reached FRA before drawing SS.

This is the kinda shit that really helps.

Yeah….. that’s not right.

Surly olds, correct me if I’m wrong but:

At 60 she’s entitled to his survivor benefits outright.

Whatever % he was getting should be accessible to her now.

From what I understand, she can’t get her benefit AND his but should at least get the higher of the two. This is of course just from some simple googling and research on SSA.gov.

Ex.) If she’s getting her say a 75% payout of taking early ss and it was $X, and he was getting his 75% payout for early ss and it was $Y and Y > X, then she should be entitled to $Y per month now.

Its still not the X+Y which sucks….

Am I right?

You are correct,  she can't get both. Which is fucking trash.  She stopped working and drew social security at a lower rate because age, he was disabled and took it after he became disabled,  at like 60.
