thank god I shut her down. in the past I've let whaky shit slide.  once upon a time she was actually at the cutting edge, shit like "leaky gut" and gut/brain axis and stuff, now she's just a nut.

That age demographic (my parents are in their late 60’s) for some reason don’t possess a bullshit filter when it comes to things on the internet. For some reason, if it’s on the internet it must be true (in their world). For well over a decade I’ve had to debunk absolute nonsense that both parents come at me with, and after peeling back the layers I discover they saw some clip or read some nonsense meme on Facebook. I’ve gotten to the point now where my dad will say something absurd, and I’ll just cut him off and say “I bet you saw/read that on Facebook”. To which his response 98% of the time is “yeah I did and I’ll show you where!”. I let him, then casually use the Google machine and show its absolute nonsense. This applies to government/partisan stuff, urban legends, dietary and helmets advice, etc.

I am lucky in that I was able to talk my parents through that phenomenon.  It started in the email FWD:FWD:FWD: era.  My mother would get an email about gangs flashing headlights, and AIDS needles in payphone coin returns and all that shit, and I'd gently explain that it was bullshit, citing sources (introduced mom to Snopes early on), and explained the phenomenon of the internet being a fountain of utter bullshit, and your FIRST instinct should be to assume all such stories are FALSE.  It took a few years, but eventually, my mom turned into one of the people who would gently correct HER friends when they sent dumb bullshit to her.

But again....I caught it and addressed it EARLY.

Health, not helmets. Don’t text and drive, kids.
