Hopefully something that helps in the red zone.

This idea of a "red zone assistant" is such a pipe dream. He'll help out in the red zone by being doing senior analyst work and working with our TEs/FBs.

10 years on Gundy's staff, that's an interesting hire.

Assuming he got scapegoated and was part of Gundy saving his job by firing everyone but himself

Hire a goal line/short yardage coach. Just someone who dreams up ways to get 1-2 yds.

Even if he'd gone stale with Gundy, he can still add plenty of value as an analyst. We always have a couple of senior guys like Hazleton, Patterson, and Chryst floating around helping out.

Speaking of which, I wonder if Bobby Slowik wants a gig this coming season.

I think having some H-Back dudes such as Emaree WInston, a mobile and less injury prone QB, a healthy Baxter, and a stronger interior O-Line (remains to be seen) will make a big difference.

Having position coaches hired away by the NFL or being promoted by other college programs is a sign of a healthy program. I’m happy for him.

As if we needed more reasons to hate Jerry Jones.

He’s making much more at Texas than the last Cowboys RB coach was making and than the average NFL RB coach makes. I’m guessing he might want to get into NFL coaching though, obviously.

Jones is a notorious cheapskate on coaches

Cowboys feel like one of the only jobs Choice would leave for since he has history there.

Also when did Jerry go so full nepotism with his staff hires? Pretty much all the rumored HC candidates had history there - Schot, Witten, Deion, Kellen Moore...Eberflus at DC, now Choice for RB coach.

Oh and if Choice does leave, I hope everyone is ready for 10 pages of debate over Stan Drayton and Rashaad Samples

Dave Campo and Jason Garrett too.  Jerry likes yes men, guys that wont tell him the truth and just basically tell him what he wants to hear.

Drayton did some solid work here and seemed to be liked but it was refreshing when he left and the next RB coach recruited more than like 3 players at a time.

Obviously Samples has a lot of fan boys here for his recruiting, but his on field stuff includes a lot of job hopping and a 9-month stint with the Rams where McVay had to assign another position coach to help Samples halfway through the season.

Per 247, Choice is set to make 725K at Texas in 2025. I can’t imagine there are many (any?) NFL RB coaches making that kind of money.

I guess there is other stuff outside of money too but hard to imagine the cowboys would be giving him a raise.

Unless he just really wants to be in the NFL, why join the Cowboys under this coach? I haven’t heard a single person say they expect Schottenheimer to be a good hire. I would be surprised if he makes it to year 3.

The Simkins dude just nailed my response.

Fuck Jerry Jones. I'll repeat the question I've been asking for 20 years: How is this asshole still alive? I fucking hate the Eagles, but if JJ had been in charge of the Eagles all this time, some Philly fan would have made the grand sacrifice by now and gone to jail for straight up assassinating JJ.

Cowboys fans should be ashamed.

Now he wants to fuck with my Longhorns?

Goddamn, motherfuckin' useless hillbilly...

Ok, rant over. Carry on...

Choice passed on a bunch of good instate backs for a guy who struggled as freshmen and a dude that got hurt. Bijan and Brooks were drayton guys.

We can probably find a new RB coach

Just don't type "best young running back coach" into Google.

I live in the world where Texas running back room was worse than it should have been in 2024 and Tashard Choice is getting "poached" by the most undesirable coaching situation in the NFL

He is an Arkansas Wooo Pig Sooie alumnus, so trying to poach Texas coaches before the Death Star becomes fully operational makes some sense, unlike perpetually sabotaging the Cowboys.

How much was the last Cowboys RB coach making?

Concur.  It should have been better.  Baxter should not have gotten injured.

Had two major injuries at the position, one of which was the bell cow starter, and a third back (Blue) who was injured early and struggled with ball security much of the year.

All that, and still had two backs (Wisner and Blue) each go over 1k total yards on the season.

Ryan Day gave up playcalling two years ago and gave Brian Hartline a shot. They really struggled, that’s why he brought in Kelly. I chuckle when I think of what would’ve become of Ohio State if Bill Obrien never got offered the Boston College job. That’s a fun alt history.

The Sark playcalling conundrum is fascinating. Sark is a very emotional playcaller and that’s what makes him great. He uses not only his scheme stuff but he relies on his relationships with his players and his knowledge of what they are confident in(very baseball-like). He’s mentioned this being a big part of his philosophy and he said that it was the main reason why he made PK come down from the press box after his 1st season. All that being said, the 3rd quarter stuff has got to get fixed because it’s unacceptable to be as bad as we were. We never scored more than 7 points in the 3rd quarter against a P5 opponent, yet we tripled our opponents in 3rd quarter yards lmao. It makes no sense.

As far as the redzone stuff is concerned, Sark has got to have a plus run game or he becomes a prisoner to his creativity. The Bama and SC offenses were historically elite in the redzone because they had backs who could do it on their own. We were great in years one and two with Bijan and we’ve fallen off since. I think simply that without an elite back, Sark just has some serious Redzone demons. His redzone struggles cost 2019 Bama vs LSU, Atlanta as OC in the playoffs on a 4th and 1, and at Texas he threw a quick screen on 4th and an inch to Xavier Worthy in Dallas and obviously the semifinal endings in back to back years. I don’t think it has to do with him being the HC I think it’s just who he is.

If, big If here, we script the first possession(10-15 plays?), why would we not do the same in Q3 after halftime adjustments?

Will Jerry even let the Cowboys have a running back on the roster in 2025? Who will choice coach?

I want to say the last Blasko rumor on pay was $400k.

Citing ball security issues is a negative for a RB coach. That is a big part of coaching RBs. It’s like saying drops excuse a WR coach. 2 RBs had issues there.

I like Choice and want him to come back, but it’s also fair to say last year was below the standard. Injuries were definitely a factor in that. Current RB room looks solid, but appears to lack some star power. Hopefully Simon comes in and shines. Personally, I think portal addition would be welcomed. Baxter’s ability to come back and stay healthy is a big question.

He’s a volume recruiter that can land 5 stars as well as anyone. These people negging his coaching skills are also idiots. There isn’t another coach for that position that anyone here can confidently state would be an upgrade.

Also, @Codaxx saying the RB “lacks star power” is fucking dumb. Baxter was a budding star and the number 1 RB recruit in the country.  His loss was discussed nationally from the day it happened through the end of the year. Gibson was also highly rated and Wisner is now a known asset with anyone covering the sport or watching games. Just a fucking dumb take.

Eh. I just don't care enough.

I might do something for the Longhorns, but, thankfully, there is not an owner involved.

Don't you all see, when he turned our "will this guy ever play?" third-string speed back into a 1000 yard bellcow, it was actually a bad coaching job.

Would be his 6th job in 5 years if you include his few month stop at TCU.
