Lol right. The SEC is just gonna hand over the game to Fox bc Ohio state wants “punishment” for this

this is glorious

the article is bordering on aggy delusion of agency when they have none

5%, only FIVE PERCENT understand there are no night games on fox on saturdays until the world series is over

about 20% of the comments understand the tv contract with their league fucks them on the reg because of the fox big noon bullshit

about 40% are blaming fox, and that includes the 20% who understand the base contract subject and the fox/mlb contract

the other 60% are mouth-breathers calling us pussies and cowards and like the article itself FAIL to recall we've already won at the shoe at night

NONE OF THEM have any clue about the negotiation between us, 0u, yormark, snakey, fox and disney, that resulted in the flip with michigan and the payoff to fox that made 0u's early exit possible

if tosu wanted a night game on a friday or sunday those negotiations would have been the time to do it - we could have worked something out with san jose state and the sec to move bye weeks and other games so we would not have a short week if it was sunday, and hell yeah to a friday night game

oh, and 30% are threatening RETRIBUTION by insisting on an 11am kick in austin next year!!!!!!!!   bbbwwwwaaaaahhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

this series has had 3 schedule changes that i can find, the last change having something to do with having a game with washington that was contracted before the pac collapse

so online article comments are the quickest way to survey a given cohort if the discussion is not here, on the rant or in the ministry

Destin, Fla. — In an hour-long Q&A session with reporters, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey tried to talk about a path forward for his league and for college sports.

Unfortunately, the discussion mostly devolved into one about the future of the college football playoff, which Sankey and Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti hold the keys to beginning in 2026.

Unfortunately, there was very little discussion about the future of NIL, of the possibility of a nine-team SEC schedule or a regular season, interconference scheduling agreement between the SEC and Big Ten.

But here’s what we learned yesterday:

1. The format for the CFP in 2026 is a hot mess. The ACC and Big 12 published a joint press announcement last week which Sankey admonished yesterday, saying he didn’t need lectures about the “good of the game”. Sankey defended the 4-4-2-2-1 format as more than equitable and adding that some of his own ADs think the SEC is giving away too much in such a format. After all, had it been a straight seeding last year, the SEC could have had 5 or 6 schools make the playoff.

2. Sankey does not believe other conferences are on the same ground as the SEC from a competition level. He feels like it is quantifiably more difficult to win games in the SEC than other conferences. He and the conference athletic directors are reluctant to introduce a ninth SEC conference game without assurances of at least four AQs in the CFP.

3. The House Settlement is a linchpin for college sports in some ways. But it is far from a complete answer. Sankey feels like too often conferences and member institutions point at the NCAA and cry foul rather than looking inward and doing something forward-thinking about the rules. After all, the member institutions are the ones who vote and create the rules in the first place. He believes there’s historically been too much inaction from schools and conferences, and that non-action now will create more of the same issues in the future.

4. Sankey said clearly that he had not been given the go-ahead to breakaway from the NCAA if he so desired, and/or specifically for football. At least that was my interpretation as well as that of others. It was somewhat slyly worded. But it is clear that Sankey is not for breaking away from the NCAA, at least not entirely. He wants the NCAA to continue to host and create championships, at least in sports other than football. He specifically mentioned the success of 14 SEC teams making the NCAA tourney, 13 baseball teams doing so, and five softball teams in the WCWS as examples of those tournaments “working” and providing opportunities for the SEC. But football is king. And that’s where there still seem to be more questions than answers.

**

Sark meets with the media this morning around 10am. We will be there with news and notes.

**

FWIW - based on that first meeting with Sankey today, there very well could be fireworks in Destin this week. Sankey meets with the media at the end of each working day this week.

I'm still laughing at how they think it's punishment, when a bunch of northern kids, who don't play in Texas in the summer, are asking to play a 11 am kickoff game...in Austin. In August/early September. When the Sun is only going to go higher, get hotter.

since 2000, fosu have played following games in september......

out west: cal, ucla, usc; didn't look up kick times for ocean weather games, also didn't look up box scores for temp at kick, doubtful any of the 3 were 'warm'

south of 36th parallel: austin 06, miami 11, norman 16, arlington 18; austin/miami/norman all night games, arlington (roach) indoors

in this century at a minimum, they have never played a game in what we would consider warm conditions, and have not played in direct sun at any temp above 80 degrees

We should call their bluff...Jeremiah Smith may get a TD on the first play...then collapse after that.

This is a list of every team from north of the 36th parallel or on the West Coast (and not exactly a murderers’ row) that Texas has hosted at DKR for an August or September day game since 2000.

We’re 4 and 3 in these relatively rare match-ups.

9/23/2006 (2:30 pm) IOWA STATE     W 37-14
9/29/2007 (2:30 pm) K STATE     L 21–41
9/12/2009 (2:30 pm) WYOMING     W 41–10
9/25/2010 (2:30 pm) UCLA     L 12–34
9/02/2017 (11:00 am) MARYLAND     L 41–51
9/09/2017 (2:30 pm) SAN JOSE ST     W 56–0
8/31/2024 (2:30 pm) COLORADO STATE     W 52–0

I’m sure that heat matters on the margins, but coaching, caliber of players, and preparation matter as well. Moreover, the starters are young men in the athletic prime (or nearly) of their lives, so I'm also sure that they’re accustomed to or can manage it during game time. I’m sure they’re all expecting Austin to be an inferno and will do their best to prepare. Now, the Ohio State fans might be another story.

I also eyeballed their listed roster for next season, and it looks like 20-25 percent are either from south of the 36th parallel (excluding So Cal) or have played college/IMG football there.

It may well be an advantage, but the limited universe of data over the last quarter century doesn't really bear that out. For me, the jury is still out on this one until I start seeing Northern players collapse en masse at midfield.

Just outside of your scope - 1999 we hosted Stanford for an 11am that was the hottest I have ever felt at DKR. Fukcin' miserable.

Sark was asked about adding Matthew Caldwell, and his answer sure sounded like he's preparing for Caldwell to be the backup. At least for game one anyway.

“We’ve got two really young, talented players in Trey and KJ that we’re excited about,” Sarkisian said. “But surely, we go to Ohio State week one. Arch’s shoe comes off. If those two guys aren’t ready, to put a player in who has a little bit of experience and played in some games I think is beneficial for us. I think it’s good for the room.”

That 66-3 UCLA game in 1997 was the most miserable I've ever felt. I'm sure there have been hotter games, but sitting there in the stands because I never leave a game early felt like the most pointless gesture in the history of my most pointless gestures. And I'm a real champion for pointless gestures. On the east side, too. I felt like God's judgement was searing down on me that day.

I swear it was 150 degrees that game. The paramedics had their hands full with people passing out left and right.

I haven't clicked this thread since May 1st. Have I missed a single thing pertinent to the team at all?

sark has killed all leaks and no one really has scoop anymore. those that do are only allowed to allude to what they know and not even give real nuggets.

It's a lot different than it used to be, but I think in the next year or 2 we will get more of an NFL type vibe from the offseason. They've gotta settle a lot of the pending NIL legislation and market, once that settles down a lot more and the portal works a lot more like free agency instead of whatever the chaotic disaster it is right now then we will see a little more coming out.

Anybody ever tell you that you sound a lot like Trev Alberts?

They've already settled quite a bit. Post NCAA settlement things will calm down a ton and there will be a lot more market data and accountability. Once that happens everyone starts to become rational actors pretty quickly. We are also reaching the end of the emotional chasing of championships with money, because it's not really achievable in a single season anymore, now you have to have a solid 3 year pipeline plus the gap filler top tier portal talent to be in the conversation.

To say that NIL is as wild as it was 2 years ago is hilarious. Nico found out the hard way.

SIAP:

Bobby Burton

Texas reporters had two opportunities to speak with Texas coach Steve Sarkisian. The first came in a semi-private meeting and the second in the larger auditorium with all SEC media.

Some notes:

- Derek Williams is staying at safety. There's no move to star in the works. "He's a safety," Sark said.

- Sark declined to say if Guilbeau would stick at corner or move back to nickel full time. "The game's not tomorrow, so I don't have to make those decisions today."

- Sark said that linebacker was probably the position he was most pleasantly surprised with this spring. "The variety" of the group stood out. He felt like they might have been a little light at the position going in to spring but then you look up and Anthony Hill, Leona Lefau, Brad Spence, Ty'Anthony Smith, Trey Moore and Bo Barnes are out there and he feels pretty good.

- He said Liona Lefau "had a great spring".

- Mentioned that he has a somewhat inexperienced OL but that there are guys there who have come up through the ranks and paid their dues. Could have gone after a portal guy there but liked where the OL stood and their ongoing development. Felt he needed to focus on other spots.

- Sark spoke briefly on the QB situation. He said they took Matthew Caldwell as an insurance policy. "We've lost a QB for some time (to injury) every year I've been at Texas." Said he wants to make sure whoever takes snaps at QB, for whatever reason, is ready to go and up to the task.

- There is some talk right now about changing college football practice scheduling. It sounds like there is a movement to begin having practices in June either instead of, or in addition to, "spring football". This could coincide with the potential of a single portal window in April/May.

I understand not wanting Lacey to have to play during his first year, but this is Owens's third year. Is Caldwell going to be third on the depth chart, or is Owens just not that good/not progressing as expected? Imo he would actually have to suck for Caldwell to be the obvious second-string guy.

This is Owens' second year (Manning's third year). It feels like he's been here longer though.

In the Sark quote I posted above, he used the phrase "not ready yet". Obviously not great news for Owens, and it's not going to get any easier going forward.

Shit, my bad. Thought he was part of the same class as Manning.

I think you guys are worrying too much about this.  Sark would probably rather have the transfer come in for Arch if he gets hurt than Owens at Columbus since we don't get any warmup games.

I don’t think we’re worrying about anything. There isn’t much uncertainty around any part of the team, so “who is going to be the backup QB” is about the sexiest storyline we have in May.

You seem pretty worried.

I’m just interested in Owens’s progression. He made some nice throws in last season’s spring game, and he’s in an interesting position in that he could transfer either because he’s too good to wait behind Arch for two more years or because he’s too bad to stay ahead of Lacey.
