Trump coins.  Or infrastructure development adjacent to Trump-owned properties.  Dude.  It's not hard.  Look at what any of a number of kleptocracies have done over the past 100 years....and we'll do that.

Toyota's FY26 Q1 (Apr-Jun) financial results came out yesterday.  Tariffs cost the company $2.9 billion in the quarter.  They've revised their operating income for the year down %15 ($4 billion). They reported an operating loss for North America in the first quarter, so it's hard to see how they can eat the tariffs for much longer.

Quote

The company reported a sharp decline in profit for the April-June quarter, with net income down nearly 40% and operating income falling 11% to $7.9 billion, despite higher sales. It cited a $2.9 billion tariff-related hit in the quarter alone, the largest reported by any automaker so far, and warned the full-year cost could reach $9.5 billion.

A whole lot of people are going to be going hungry soon. ABC News reporting that most house holds will spend an extra $2400 a year on items. For a house that’s already pay check to pay check - an extra $200 a month is going to hurt.

Correct.  The ability of Americans to connect actual policies to their actual effects.....versus attributing vague "gubmint did something" as the cause of everything bad in their lives, is astounding to me still.

They at once blame the government for shit it didn't do and doesn't control, while looking right past the actual real-world effects that government action has on their lives.  We deserve all the stupid shit we are getting, because we the people are mind-bendingly stupid.

Doesn't Hawley want to offset that with a whopping $600 check?

Like no worries, now it's just $1800/year

I assume that is going to be good at least in the short run for Hawaii, but are there any other domestic commercial growers of coffee beans? What is the scale up time if it’s feasible to have a significant domestic industry?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, most of the US is not suitable for growing coffee. Others have tried and failed to produce coffee across the country, but for now, Hawaii, California, and Puerto Rico are the only places producing coffee on a sustainable scale.

Not sure how it’s priced mainland (can’t imagine it’s cheaper than here) but people would probably still pay more for Hawaiian than the 30% increase

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/24/global-mail-suspend-us-de-minimis-deliveries.html

Postal services across the world are halting shipments to the United States this week amid mounting confusion over new import duties that will apply to parcels starting Friday.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month abolishing the trade loophole known as “de minimis,” which since 2016 had allowed goods worth up to $800 to enter the U.S. duty-free.

The end of the exemption is being extended worldwide after the loophole was closed in May for packages from mainland China and Hong Kong.

....

DHL, one of the world’s largest courier companies, said Friday that it will stop accepting parcels containing goods from business customers destined for the U.S. beginning Monday.

The company cited unresolved “key questions” about the process, including “how and by whom customs duties will be collected in the future, what additional data will be required, and how the data transmission to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be carried out.”

Updated the Trump Import Taxes tracker:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/07/28/business/economy/trump-tariff-tracker.html?unlocked_article_code=1.hU8.7Kxt.WHZ02eWn8eVZ&smid=url-share
(Providing a gift link since there are some interactive elements.)

Some observations:

  • Looking at Europe, Switzerland must be like, "What the fuck did we do?" (39%)
  • The same goes for India. (50%)
  • The reason for high taxes on Brazilian items, though, should be apparent. (50%)
  • It's wild that the taxes Americans will have to pay on imported Canadian goods are among the very highest. (35%)

Tax rates on goods from our biggest trade partners are:

  • Canada: 35%
  • China: 30%
  • Mexico: 25%
  • Europe: 15%

QUESTIONS:

  • Has anyone seen an updated estimate of the average tax rate on all imports Americans will have to pay from around the world?
  • Until now, I hadn’t thought about the potential effects on oil imports. Are they somehow exempt? Because we get about half of all our imported oil from Canada.
    • Canada: 35% tax rate
    • Mexico: 25%
    • Saudi Arabia: 10%
    • Venezuela: 15%
    • Brazil: 50% (interesting to compare the difference between the import tax rates from Venezuela and Brazil)

So, postal services all over the world are suspending shipping of parcels to the US.  Of particular interest to me (because in 2025 America, things only matter if they affect you directly), my kids living in the UK and Germany can no longer send me any packages.  So, that's cool.

One thing I can't find is whether the removed tariff exemption (the $800 de minimis exemption) applies to goods carried by a person when passing through customs.  Like, when my wife lands today from our visit to London, and she has some snacks and small gifts in her bag (probably worth under $250 total), does she need to declare them and pay a tariff?  Seriously, I legit don't know.  EDIT - just did a bit of homework, and it seems that the personally carried items exemption is under a different statute that is (thus far) not affected by Trump's executive orders.

This is all just so fucking stupid.

Yeah, India is being punished for helping Russia by buying their oil and financing their war with Ukraine.  You'd think they'd be rewarded for helping our president's butt buddy

Not affected until the dotard is told how mouthy you've been on the internet.  Then it will be greatly affected.

Congrats on your life’s station. Quite the flex.

Regardless your finances, you’re poor in spirit and have a lifetime of loneliness ahead. Enjoy that as you count your pennies, champ.

I don't know how to feel about this one. I know intellectually that these tariffs are all incredibly stupid and self destructive. But I'm also kind of like fuck India for subsidizing Putin's murderous war.

Trump should probably just declare war on everybody but us, so then I won’t have to figure out which of the few remaining countries don’t hate us.

I mean....he pretty much has.  We are in a trade war with literally every country on earth.  All of them.  Including the penguin island.

As it’s past 5 o’clock, and with the perspicacity provided by the cocktail hour, maybe Trump is playing 5D chess with India!

On one hand, he is slamming them with tariffs. On the other hand, he is dramatically raising the price of beef….hhmmmmm
