I just googled Justice Finkley to see how he did at Kansas this past year. Evidently, he was on the Texas team. I'm not trying to be a dick or anything but I would have sworn he left after the 2023 season. I have zero memory of him last year.

I went ahead and looked up where some of our guys went, because I couldn't remember and I still want good things for them.

Justice Finkley went to Kansas. He was maxed out and was seeing less and less playing time every season. Can't fault the kid for wanting to play and its a good school academically, but for some reason I thought he came to Texas to eventually go to medical school. KU has a medical school too, so that may still be the plan, but I'm surprised he didn't stay to graduate. I will miss his mom's online presence, she was awesome.

Aaron Bryant went to Vandy. Good for him, that seems like a solid move. I gotta ask, how bad was he that he couldn't find the field for us with how much we needed a run stuffer? I would have thought he would at least be in the three-deep this season. But Vandy is a great spot for any kid from the south who values a degree.

Jaray Bledsoe and Derion Gullette both transferred to Mississippi State. That seems like a drastic step down. Both guys are from Texas and both were billed as freak athletes (although Gullette's injury may have limited his upside), so I would have thought someone local would have picked them up. Or at least someone better than MSU. Either way it's a shame, I had high hopes for these guys.

I don't really give a shit about Niblack, Mitchell, or Cook.

I am pretty sure that Finkley graduated.

Bryant played this year and was blown off the ball every time he was in on a snap. It was depressing to watch.

In the quiet words of Ronnie Coleman, "EVERYBODY WANNA BE A BODYBUILDER BUT DON'T NOBODY WANT TO LIFT THIS HEAVY ASS WEIGHT!"

If you wanna be a DAMNED DOG at DL you better get in the gym and learn to squat a FUCKING TRUCK!

I wouldn't be surprised if he had graduated, but his linkedin suggests he is still seeking his bachelors - https://www.linkedin.com/in/justice-finkley-1b2096239/

Sidenote, didn't know he had an NIL deal with Sonic. Yet another reason to like the kid.

Sark/Bo Davis's first DL class of Finkley, Bryant, Bledsoe, Tapp, and Kriss Ross was a total flop. Thankfully, we could rely on the best DL recruiter in the country's prior efforts to field elite DLs the last two years.

I was not a fan of that class at the time because they were undersized, but I do recall several of surly’s most knowledgeable recruiting posters being very comfortable with that class.

It is a sign of program health to have perfectly serviceable guys need to transfer out in order to receive playing time.  It is a good sign to have guys leave and still land at P4 schools instead of the Sam Houston State's of the world.  Texas is no longer locked into bad evals, or developmental gambles that yielded guys who are just good, decent, players.  Texas is quickly becoming a place where if you can rise to the level of starter, you will likely get drafted.  If you aren't that kind of player, you probably will need to move on and enjoy your years as a college player elsewhere.

All of those guys had different obstacles/left for different reasons.  But the bottom line is that they simply were not good enough.  I was initially worried that Sark was too nice of a guy, but he has managed to build a culture where the guys like each other and there is camaraderie, accountability, and competitiveness - but there is also the knowledge and understanding that change is constant (unless you are Max Merril.)

What about Will Randle? Nary a peep about him given otf does 5 shows per day.. is he part of Arch's nil?

I’m not dying on the hill that he graduated. Just thought I read that he did.

I don’t remember being pumped about anyone other than Tapp, but I could be wrong. The reality is, we all wanted that class to be awesome because we felt like we needed it to be, given the decade+ of shittiness.

Will Randle's nomination into the Max Merril Society is under strong consideration.

So a grad transfer WR better than Brown and Stewart that didn’t go to the draft for some reason? Man I’m curious

No clue if Williams is a grad candidate, but he could theoretically be our number 1 receiver and also punt returner.

At Clemson Wesco is the number 1 and they have another dude that looks like an NFL player. Lotta resources at the WR position for a school that's always crying poor about NIL and has a half dozen upperclassmen littering next year mock drafts that need to be paid.

In that vein it would be nice to hit Clemson before the season starts and they are ranked top 3 with their ACC schedule. Dabo tears would be the icing

Wesco was a true Freshman last season, he ain’t grad transferring

I think there is still a window for grad students to transfer. The bold portion reads as though a student's name might not appear until completing all academic requirements. So, the potential WR could have notified the school, but the school can't put the name in until that player has graduated.

https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/reports/getReport/90008

13.1.1.4.2 Notification of Transfer -- Postgraduate Student-Athletes. A student-athlete who will participate as a postgraduate student at another institution following the next regular academic term or academic year (two semesters/three quarters) may initiate the notification of transfer process at any time between October 1 and the end of the final period specified for the applicable sport in Bylaw 13.1.1.4.1 by providing the student-athlete's institution with a written notification of transfer and completing an educational module related to transferring. The student-athlete's institution shall enter the student-athlete's information into the national transfer database within two business days of receipt of a written notification of transfer from the student-athlete or receipt of confirmation of the student-athlete's completion of the educational module, whichever occurs later. (Adopted: 9/21/22, Revised: 4/18/24, 6/26/24)

Rereading this... I misinterpreted the "education module" to mean academic requirements. Instead, it's some "transfer portal education" check-the-box training.

Still, the "or" clause at the end makes it sound like a player can take forever to do the training module then actually have his name entered the transfer portal. Not sure if this may be the case with the mystery WR, but I don't think any grad transfer has done this yet.

Sorry for any false hope here.

SIAP, but Scipio let it slip on the latest EGAT that Jordyn Tyson at ASU was the WR we were hoping would enter the portal.

Probably still bitter about his brother Jaylon riding the bench his freshman year

That's an Oklahoma company. It's actually the first thing I've heard about him that I don't like.

(Yes I know they're headquartered in Atlanta now)

I take my cranky old mom by Sonic for a fudge sundae (extra fudge) on the way home from all of her doctors/diagnostic visits to UT Southwestern, so this hits close to home.

Most recent sundae was two days ago after a mammogram that took over two fucking hours! (Imagine waiting for someone to use a copy machine at FedEx Office for just over two fucking hours!)

Last I heard Ian Ratliff was headed to Appalachian St.

Did a Google Maps cruise around App State’s campus and surrounding area and that’s a beautiful part of the state if you like nature.

My girlfriend's family is all from Watauga County around Boone. Her granddad designed a lot of the ski resorts in the area where the RJ Reynolds execs would spend their winter weekends. I like the vibe in that part of the Blue Ridge more than Asheville, honestly - more ski town and college football hub, fewer stoners and bachelorette parties.

Even if every incoming position player were to bust, this is still a win based on the upgrade on special teams.

For sure, and they won't all bust. But if they did, we'd still be ahead due to the upgrade at kicker and punter.

In what form? That’s an idiotic statement. The SEC would run all over us if our transfer Dline didn’t produce and we wouldn’t be ahead.

OU did well on defense in 2023 with three deep DL JAGs, on short rotations, instructed to give it their all on every play, because they would be rotated out quickly. That’s our floor, next year. If a couple of guys can play, we’ll be good.

For Pete's sake, this board is overrun with illiterate lunkheads. Just comprehending the meaning of the word 'if' is like scaling the Alpe d'Huez for some of you mouth-breathers. I'll spell it out for you. We jettisoned a raft of complete non-contributors. Even IF the incoming transfers don't pan out, we still improved through the portal by moving on from Auburn and Kern. No one is positing that this is the optimal outcome.
