I think they beat South Carolina this weekend, they are the biggest train wreck in the conference compared to expectations. I also think they split their final two home games against Missouri or LSU. LSU's offense is pathethic and Missouri has really never been a team that goes on the road and wins a lot of SEC games. So, likely 7-5. Venables is fired, Arbuckle heads back to the G5, where he needs to figure out how to run the ball without a QB heavy scheme, and Mateer likely heads to another P4 team where is he underperform expectations.

I also don't see a coach worth a shit coming in and allowing Nagy to dictate personnel. Joe C needs to become the hatchet man before he leaves, because no new AD will want to deal with that type of dysfunction.

Not sure why you think they can beat Missouri. Missouri will control the time of possession and likely will bury mateer on his runs.

ou at least grasps the new nil landscape at a basic level, and they got both recent and historical success
but they don't have the MONEY for the new nil landscape, and that's gonna relegate them to mid major status ultimately

Does any new hire, whenever it happens, have to accept Nagy as gm and recruit pool czar?  Or will he be one of the scapegoats?

Stephenson was CEO of AT&T and President of the Boy Scouts, so he’s the prince of darkness. The guy is a master of finger pointing and throwing subordinates under the bus. He’s tight with Nagy now, but once they burn Skeletor at the stake, they’ll be looking for another body.

I am torn on this one. With all the movement in the coaching ranks already, where would you put OU in the hierarchy as HC landing spots?

Would you rather go to UF or PSU or OU? It is not like you have a Sark or Lanning, or Kiffin hanging out in the coaching rehabilitation clinic as a known top level candidate. Would OU fire BV to hire a retred like Jimbo?

Well - there is a list of jobs that are very obviously better. Texas, tOSU, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, LSU. Maybe Oregon but their travel situation is kind of a mess. I would think Notre Dame is a better job.

Past that I would need to know more about NIL and what the environment is like. OU is probably in the 2nd tier with PSU, UF, FSU, Tennessee, Clemson (which you could argue is still 1st tier - hard to know with the mess Dabo has made post NIL). Miami is probably in there. I don't really know how to rate aggy as a job. I have no idea how to rate USC anymore and they have the same travel issues as Oregon.

It's a better job than anything in the B12 or anything else in the ACC. It's still a very good job but not a T1 job anymore.

Relatively informative article on how OU Football is currently structured:

https://www.si.com/college/oklahoma/football/how-randall-stephenson-suddenly-became-oklahoma-s-big-man-on-campus-01jznpr86yxd

If Nagy doesn’t report to Skeletor, and Joe C is outgoing, I think it’s safe bet that Stephenson is his direct report.

I would assume Stephenson takes a salaried position in the AD as soon as the offset language in his AT&T golden parachute rolls off. Many people think he’ll succeed Joe C.

One of my close friends knew Stephenson intimately. Said he’s an idiot. Which we all know from his disaster performance as CEO of AT&T.

Interesting article that I missed this summer, thanks for sharing bill. I must say there are no clear lines of leadership here. Who is in charge?

  • The University president, Harroz?
  • The "football chair" Stephenson who is hiring the next AD (but maybe wants the job)?
  • Nagy, the GM?
  • Skeletor, the coach?
  • The next AD?

That is a recipe for dysfunctional leadership. And when you layer on the blame game at the end of what is likely to be an 8-4 or 7-5 type season with a blow-out loss to Texas, it is going to be a bloodbath. Can't wait!

Nagy trying to Moneyball a SEC Football program should be highly entertaining. I hope they give him time to implode the program and set them back at least 4 recruiting classes.

I enjoy the Sooners in the replies to this who crow about winning the Big 12. Yeah, that's great and all but they all know that era is dead and they are facing the reality that getting even close to an SEC championship is not happening with Venables at the helm. Coping with mediocrity is hard. We know, we've been there before.

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer seeks redemption after worst start of his career

Oct. 14, 2025  AP

NORMAN, Okla.  — Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is coming off the worst start of his career.

He barely completed 50% of his passes for just 202 yards and threw three interceptions in a 23-6 loss to Texas last Saturday that sent the Sooners (5-1, 1-1 SEC) tumbling to No. 14 in the AP Top 25. Now, for the first time since transferring from Washington State, Mateer is forced to try to bounce back from a loss.

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said Tuesday that Mateer has handled the aftermath of the Texas game well so far, though he might be taking too much of the blame.

“I’ve got even more respect for him,” Venables said. “You want to carry all the weight for all your guys, but you can’t do that. ... He wants to take the whole team on his back and that’s not fair to him at all. So (I) try to help him with his perspective.”

Mateer said after Saturday's game that the pain in his right (throwing) hand that he played with against Texas less than three weeks after surgery was not a factor. Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, who came from Washington State with Mateer, said his quarterback's mindset was the bigger issue, and that needs to be fixed.

“It’s a mental reset,” Arbuckle said. “Do I trust John Mateer? Absolutely, I do. But I wouldn’t be doing my job as a coach if I just sat back and said, ‘I’m going to just trust that he’s going to get it right.’ So it’s a mental reset. It’s back to the basics.”

Arbuckle said Mateer, who had not thrown more than two interceptions in a college game before Saturday, pressed too hard.

“He’s his harshest critic," Arbuckle said. "And he knows that stuff he did on last Saturday wasn’t what winning requires. He does a really good job of resetting his mind, whether it’s footwork or his reads, and really honing in on that and cleaning that up, making sure he’s very intentional with that in practice.”

Venables said Mateer has done a good job of picking up the team while trying to absorb the Texas result.

“He’s a humble guy that likes to work," Venables said. “He doesn’t live in La-La Land. He knows what’s good and what isn’t good and what’s good enough and what ain’t good enough, so he’ll go right back to work, and did. The guys really respect that. That helps everybody step back in line.”

Mateer has moved on, and he sees an opportunity in Saturday’s game at South Carolina (3-3, 1-3).

“First road SEC game, so I’m excited,” he said. “If your confidence is fragile in this league and in this game, you don’t have a chance. So being a man, I mean, it (losing to Texas) was tough ... But you’ve got to step up and find a way, and I will.”

Just a few weeks ago, Mateer was considered a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy. He still has plenty of opportunities to regain that status. Either way, Arbuckle said Mateer needs to focus on the little things.

“Stay true to who you are.,” Arbuckle said. “Stay true to the process that has gotten you to where you have been in life and as a player. Don’t listen to the outside noise because that’s nothing pertaining to you.”

The pain may not have been a factor, but I have no doubt it affected his ability to control the ball. Reality is he shouldn't been playing and dumb to risk a career to just to beat Texas and it bit them in the ass. Hawkins couldn't have been worse and probably would've been better.

I seem to remember Hawkins looking pretty good against us for about 2-3 plays last year before we buried his ass.

Mateer's mistakes were almost all mental. Only Littleton's pick was an off target throw to an open receiver and on that one his throwing form was terrible because of pressure from Moore on his right.

The only one I think the hand might have actually impacted was the backward pass that Taafe almost recovered but was out of bounds. That was terrible. But even that one may have just been not wanting to lead his receiver into the crashing defender (Roberson).

I think the thumb excuse is bullshit. He looked fine throwing pre-game. I just don't think he's that accurate in general and like Huck said, prone to mental mistakes. Hell, he seemed more accurate against Auburn AFTER he broke his thumb. If you throw out the Illinois State game where he completed 81% of his passes, he has a 59% completion percentage for the rest of this season. He was at 64% last year for Washington State against a mostly dogshit schedule and his numbers dropped dramatically against the few good teams they faced.

I actually like the guy (for a Sooner) and think he shows a lot of moxey, but he's not exactly Colt McCoy out there when it comes to accuracy.

Yep.  It's the College Station Syndrome.  Years of struggle, a new player starts to cobble together some semblance of success, and they're overwhelmed.  This chode was bein built up as the next Baker Mayfield.  Heisman favorite.  Then he's rushed back too early as the savior of OU football.  He's been hearing this for weeks.  Only he can save the team.  He's from frickin Wash. State.  The gravity of the RRS sets in, and he's rattled.

Combine this with bonehead coaching.  They just kick the FG at the end of the 1st half and it's an entirely different game.  They carry the momentum into the locker room.

The remaining games are just brutal and they could easily lose all six.  It's fucking glorious!

I said before the season started his numbers were built on a crappy WAC schedule and he did nothing against a good defense. And I knew the Hypsman crap was BS.  But I have to disagree about the surgery not affecting him. I've had my share of broken bones and I know for a fact your control is not back in 17 days. Painkillers may take away the pain but they can't give you back all the feeling and control. When I broke my scapula it didn't even start hurting until 3 hours later and it's a good thing my mother insisted I go to the hospital because the x-ray showed a break which shocked me. Then it started hurting like hell and woulda gone crazy without the codeine they gave me. That could explain why it didn't affect him at Auburn. Breaks can be weird things.

Mateer had screws put in his finger. There's just no way it didn't have some affect only 17 days afterward.

I pretty much called exactly who Mateer was this offseason. He looks like a Heisman guy against overmatched competition and puts up great stats, but once he faces good defenses that aren't at a big talent disadvantage, he starts throwing a lot of intercept-able balls and struggles to complete more than half of his passes.  Sometimes he could salvage those performances with his legs, but he's going to struggle to do even that against good SEC defenses.  OU's expectations got set extremely high with a joke of a first 5 games leading to a bloated #6 ranking. They're in for a rude awakening from here on out and I can't wait to see it.

It cracks me up that there are national pundits out there predicting Mateer to win the Heisman or thinking he will be an elite QB this year. He had a very good season last year, and he's a good QB. But his schedule was a joke. WSU had a large talent advantage in 8 of their 12 games, and 5 of their games last year were against teams outside the top 100 in Defensive FEI.  Not surprisingly, most of those are the teams he feasted against and inflated his stats.  He will be playing with better talent on offense, but the comparative talent against his opponents will get significantly worse for him this year.

When you look at the defenses that were in the top 70 in DFEI (Tech 44th, UW 29th, Boise 32nd, Fresno 66th), his stats give a much more realistic indicator of what type of player he is. He had a great game against Boise and ran all over a poorly coached Tech defense, but he struggled mightily passing against three of the four. In total, he was 69/125, 55.2%, 215 YPG, 4 TDs 4 INTs with 75 Atts for 333 yds at 4.44 YPC.  He's not great in the pass game against competition with a pulse, but he did hurt some of those teams on the ground. However, it's going to take a serious toll if he tries to have 20 carries per game against every average or better defense he faces this year.

Anyone expecting Mateer to be a savior for the OU offense that can singlehandedly overcome a questionable OL and weak offensive weapons is in a for a rude awakening this Fall.

Texas should have had 8 turnovers against OU on Sat. Aside from the 3 picks, there were at least 3, maybe 4 interceptable balls that we dropped plus the backwards pass that Taafe couldn’t quite reel in.

Buddy, name a single time Strong ever even lucked into a 10-win season, or started 5-0. 6-7, 6-7, 5-7....in the Big XII.

Sam Pittman, in a much more difficult conference, has one 9-win season, and two 7-win seasons. He's better than Strong.

Even Billy Napier had one 8-win season at UF. Again, in a much more difficult conference.

Charlie Strong is the worst coach to coach at even a helmet school, much less a blue blood in a conference that was just a notch ahead of the WAC.

No one alive today, who has coached at a blue blood/new blue blood are worse than Charlie Strong.

We looked weak going into that game after the Florida debacle. Beating us would have made their season. Mateer looked ready to go to me. I'd play because the game is so important to them and they're falling behind us.

It’s hard to argue with this. Charlie Strong was fucking TERRIBLE. Just a complete buffoon.

The most damning stat against this supposedly "elite" ou defense is that we only gave up 1 sack, while they gave up 5.

They somehow have 22 sacks overall with  R Mason Thomas with 4, while we have have 16, with Colin Simmons, even while dropping back, also has 4. Imagine if PK wouldn't drop him back, he could have double those (assuming, but let's be real, he would). Spence has 2, and if he doesn't get more snaps, that's negligence and I'm calling the cops. He's a force of nature with Ant Hill and Ty'Anthony Smith, but better at rushing the QB and QB pressures than Smith. But both are great at what they do. Spence graded out just a smidge higher at 72.5 (25 snaps) v Smith 70.2 (22 snaps). Just to put it here, Ant had a 64 pff grade on 64 snaps.

We have a cobbled together oline where we had fucking Stroh starting for 4 and three quarters games, and then replaced by Brooks (true frosh who has never played G), Hutson (Is somehow starting, is a ragdoll, and is considered below average per grades. Just fucking put in Robertson or Cruz so we can all stop seeing Hutson's tampon string flying around when he tossed to the side like a dead hooker Ted Bundy finished off), Baker (RS-FR RT. Gets a pass), and Goosby, (a 1st-2nd rd pick first year "starter" full-time. He needs to come back to get more snaps and film), with a single player in Campbell being the only 4-year starter.

OU is in a similar position, other than they have Fasusi (true frosh) starting, one returning starter in LG Heath Ozaeta, and 3 transfers. They're irrelevant and I don't care.

Both Bendenbaugh and Flood are two sides of the same coin.

He had trouble with accuracy beyond 15 yards. I don't know whether that was his thumb or not, although it seems logical, but I do know that whatever it was, it was physical.

I thought of Blake, which is exactly why I said alive. I almost forgot he passed. But here is the worst part, and this is laughable at how stupid Blake was- he was a witch recruiter (see Bob Stoops ONLY NC with someone else's players). If Blake were still rolling around his oxygen tank, he would be the undisputed worst coach in the Big XII, ever. Again, we're only using the criteria of blue blood/helmet school. He's just barely, and I mean like a game or 2 ahead of Strong in worst coach ever., but he gets no pass because he was a recruiting witch doctor.
