We were predicted to finish 8th.      In the sec

I’m aware.  So the predictors were dipshits?  I’d guess quite often predictions in balanced conferences are all over the board.  I really wouldn’t hold them to a standard however.

People, on this very board, were reasonably hyped about Easton Winfield.  Think he may have been a top 10 transfer guy.  He may well turn into a fine player even.  But anyone could have a taken 5 minutes to review his stat line from last year.  Much of his production was against SWAC teams then a few good games versus mid tier teams.  For one year only.  There were legit questions about his conversion to the next level.  Much of that ignored.

Then you take an Ace Reese.  Small town kid.  The first article I find says he had 1 offer out of high school.  Then 247sports shows 1 transfer offer.  You might could say Texas missed twice.

Expect outcomes all over the map.  Tons of variables in baseball. Lots of volatility.

Or Schloss actually did a good job and we over achieved?  This team actually had middle of the road sec talent after all?

Those aren't slumps.  They're two guys with terrible swing mechanics & plate approaches who consistently got worse over time.

I am not going to disrespect UTSA like that. That's bullshit. They were a #2 for a reason.

If you doubt that look at their season.

In any case anytime you lose in a Regional and you are Texas it is a disappointment. Doesn't matter who it is against.

Let me be angry dammit!

Their production tanked big time.  Trying to figure out what goes on in a coach’s brain and in particular a baseball coach’s brain is brain draining for fans.  Schloss is not the only one guilty of this as I’ve seen it from good coaches from the high school to pros.  But when does a coach cut bait with a someone who is in a slump?     Flores and Gasp numbers did not lie and the best we could do is move them down in the batting order….  Beam me up!  At the very least in last night’s game, I’d think after at bat number two someone on the bench would’ve been given the bat to try to get on base and/or move over someone who was on base.    Yea Flores hit a rope and the UTSA CF made a highlight grab.  But after that….

I really think that this team greatly overachieved during the first three months of the season, and that the team that showed up in May is more indicative of their true talent.  I think the pundits who predicted an 8th-place finish in the SEC were closer to the mark than we want to believe.  I should have known better than that this timeline would allow me some joy in the baseball postseason.

Slumps last a few games.   Flores and Gasp were veggies indeed.

One could not have asked for a better regular SEC season.

The point is that many, maybe damn near all, don’t know the actual talent.

I’m not sure we overachieved.  Regular season better than thought.  Disappointing post season.  Offensively, Rodriguez was probably better than expected but not really anyone else.  We got less out of our big 3 than expected.  Pitching-wise Volantis was huge, but he was pretty highly rated.  The hit rate on other pitchers improving was pretty high, but it’s not like they were building from nothing.  I guess Walker and his 10 innings were a surprise.

I don't disagree.  I won't let the coaches off the hook, they have to own a lot of this for sure.  But players gotta play and again if Flores was able to keep two balls in the infield we likely run away with game 1.

Then elaborate on the talent of other teams.

Why was Vandy, the #1 overall seed, so talented yet they beat Wright State (who?) by 1 then lost by 1.  They lost to a 15-15 regular season ACC team.

UF.  Lost by a combined 22-10 to East Carolina.  East Carolina finished 10 games behind UTSA.  ECU was 5 games closer to last place than first.  I guess they were “hot” though.

Kentucky, Georgia.  Eliminated by “shit-ass” Big 12 teams.

LSU.  How the hell did they get such a pathetic regional?  I guess Little Rock is a good loss.  You know with their losing record on the season including a split with Arkansas Pine Bluff.

Nothing inspiring about MSUs run.  Ended about where you’d expect.

Alabama 0-2 including a loss to a mediocre Miami.

OU, Ole Miss and Tennessee possibly advancing today.

Auburn and Pig advance pretty easily.

It is reasonable to say that no other SEC team has beaten a team as good as UTSA except OU over UNC.  Creighton maybe.   DBU. NCstate.

I understand.  Flores and Will were not good.  Flores was pretty solid defensively until the last few weeks.  I don’t know exactly the reasons for their struggles.  I do believe they have far better upsides.  Flores is running out of time show it.  Total speculation on my part, but I’d guess neither are here next year.

My original point was that our guys natural abilities are downplayed and particularly in relation to other teams and really historically.

I feel like, we pressed against UTSA.  We were in our heads.  When it was 6-4 in game 1, Ithe players likely said "crap here we go again."  It was cruise control before then.  I'm still not over it

that just really points to the fact that this is a pretty so-so field of teams. had Spencer stayed healthy and Riojas not had the yips who knows what happens. no where near a top Texas club, yet good enough to win it all in 2025. I think that points more to the fact that this year is a down year for NCAA mens baseball.

for a period of time he was shit at the plate, unless he was not shit, and those shitless times often involved a double with 1-2 RBIs. it was weird.

Flores generally sucked, but if meep meep CF hadn't made a highlight reel play on the one ball he smashed in the gap, would that have made Flores "clutch?"

zero depth at all, pitching and hitting.

we were playing with injured guys everywhere(williams, galvan, Arod) and couldn't sub for a SS making errors/not hitting even .150 and a CF that was a strike out/ground out machine.  Then when spencer went down that was it.

we ran on adrenaline v aggy to get 1 run wins even though they sucked and everything since then was a big ball of medi-okra.

Schlossnagle said in post game that Texas hasn't played in a league as deep as the SEC before.  I doubt that.  Besides the fact that you don't play all the teams so depth doesn't matter as much, some of those Big 12 schedules before Nebraska left were pretty deep.  Some recency bias at work.  I'm in the camp that the SEC this year was not very deep and, at the top, not as good as past years.

Made a Sunday day trip to ATX for that KState game. Excellent seats behind the plate, but F the team for losing Sat night so I had to sit in 489° degree heat at 2pm.  I had all weekend passes but couldn't stay for the night game. I thought we were back on track after kstate bc the bats were alive, but turns out they are just scared of UTSA or something.  It was laughable seeing the first 2 pitchers just bean and walk batters...then give up a big hit after hit.

This team has been unraveling since the aggy series. They really haven't done anything since then. Joke of an end to the good season.

I blame the snide on Indiana State’s obvious lack of shoulder mobility and strength/conditioning.

yeah aggy series was a canary in the coal mine for sure. loved having the sweep, it did make me think the team had the grit to go farther than they did, but after Spencer went down and that weekend played out as it did, I revised expectations from this team can win it all, to no way they win the title, and making omaha 50/50.

big 12 plus texas non-conf was pretty legit most years until very recently. the only thing I think the SEC truly has on other primary leagues are the stadiums and crowd sizes.  sure, some years the SEC is stupid legit other years not so much. but as we have always said, it's a self fulfilling prophecy for those knuckle draggers. you never know with the SEC until post season because they play shit non conf games.  I'm gonna fucking hate that about Schloss.

I don't understand this point by Schloss unless we had finished middle of the pack.

I don't buy this company line bullshit that the "mental grind" is somehow significantly harder in the SEC than any other conference.

Baseball is a hard game, the mental grind is tough for anyone playing major college baseball.

We overachieved, then water found its level. I feel like Schloss got more out of this team and this should just rapidly accelerate the program building. Hats off to UTSA, they looked like and played like the better team. I hope they get a trip to Omaha out of it.

This idea that the SEC has so much more talent than everyone else needs to go away. This is baseball. Coaching and execution wins.

One thing I want to see us do next season is bunt.

Gus and Augie used the bunt all of the time and seem to have done pretty well.

Gus and Augie were successful two decades ago and four decades ago. The game has changed.

There is a place for the occasional bunt but the Augie/Gus small ball is not a good strategy for scoring runs regularly

I am not saying we become a bunting team, but thats one thing Augie made damn sure that every, single, starter knew how to put down a bunt in the warm up first 4 weeks of the season.  there were numerous times he sent a .400 hitter up with 1 or 2 on early in a game and told them to bunt.  and if they failed, he would keep telling them to bunt until they laid one down corretly.

he knew there was going to be a point in June that they needed to move two guys on first and second ahead 90 feet, and he made damn sure everyone from his boom-sticker to his base stealing specialist all fucking knew how to lay down a semi-respectable bunt.

instead we got

my-name-is-jeff-jump-street.png

Jeff. Jalin... same same...

trying to do something other than be an 90% guaranteed out. (and 8 of the other 10% being him getting a walk)

only to fail in such spectacular fashion, that if the Meep Meep pitcher had a fucking brain, he would have dropped the free pop up bunt on the ground and done a double or triple play by dropping it throwing to 3rd, and hope they ran the wheel around to first.... with Jalin half assing it to first after he thought he was out on a pop bunt.

that comes from not having some fucking experience earlier in the season putting down a bunt

Why on the bolded? Outside of homeruns we absolutely suck at hitting as a whole. Same issues across two different HC's with him.

Weiner can be explained by injuries and lack of arm talent as a whole. But given our recruiting class and the work we're about to do in the portal I think overall we will be much better pitching staff moving forward.

Look what Tulo had to work with. Talent wise there wasn’t much there for him, and it’s easy to see which guys wouldn’t sniff the middle to top end of rosters in the SEC. Winfield turned out to be a dud and Rodriguez was doing pretty good till he hurt his hand—still did well in towards the end all things considered. 4ish guys in the lineup were somewhat consistent with the rest being in and out of the lineup or a black hole. And while Flores regressed from last year, guys like Galvan and Kimble improved. At least Weiner got an ace and Ruger out of the portal, and freshmen of the year in the SEC.
