Our youngest is comfortably auto-admit and is looking for a big prestigious state university with good sports, but probably won’t even apply to (and certainly will not enroll at) UT.

It’s crazy because so much of our family graduated from UT and loved it so much that being a Longhorn is part of our identity. But in talking through school options, I just keep finding myself saying “Fuck UT. It’s becoming a fascist shithole. Go somewhere else.”

It’s really depressing.

They’re not going to be giving their best in the classroom, because they are going to be afraid of being surveilled,” Smith said. “Literally, people are going to refuse to tell the truth to their students and withhold information from their students. If a student comes up and says, 'I really want to read this book,’ you’ll have to say, 'I don’t know what book that is. I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ This is the 1984 moment that we’re in.”

That seems really problematic.

Obviously not a good direction for the school to be going, but how much of this is really trickling down to individual classes that kids are taking?

I'm not a UT alum, but as a Texas resident I still view it as the top affordable choice for a kid that can get auto-admit. Is it going to be worth the price difference to send a kid to somewhere like Madison instead? I hope we don't have to find out.

I think the finding out process has started already. Running off world class professors and researchers means you will now see students look elsewhere to go to school. Really sad time for the United States and schools like UT that are seeing a brain drain because 80 million clowns decided to elect one.

I'm holding onto the hope that UT's rep will still be decent when my 2 kids graduate within the next year.

I know that's incredibly naive and their degrees (and mine) will slowly become tarnished.  I don't care about my degree, but theirs?  It's over.

It's unchecked oil money, mostly .... rich alums like Bud Brigham and others. It's not enough that they got the Civitas Institute.

Some of my French and German physics and astronomy friends are advising their students not to come to UT, even though they, themselves, did their graduate work here. Places like CalTech and MIT are about to get better.

Auto-bid is as auto-bid does.   My chance of getting in Florida now with the grades I had then would be <check notes > approximately zero.

Big prestigious state university with great sports?  Does your kid enjoy burning couches?

My daughter is a rising senior in plan II. There were several courses that she wanted to take fall of her junior year and this year that are no longer offered. She had registered for one last fall and it was pulled after registration. They had been labeled DEI and these were tenured professors who pulled the courses. It really is ridiculous.

I also know, for a fact, University of Tennessee is still actively hyping DEI to incoming students, at least for the college of business. My youngest son got in and on the tour they were all about it. Fucking UT Knoxville more progressive than UT Austin. Who ever would’ve thought that

To be honest, I think it’ll be a decade before you see any significant change in the reputation. Unfortunately, the quality of the education is suffering immediately

Yeah, and these weren’t even that. More like racial issues during certain periods of American history just really ridiculous.

Reverse polarity - HAD you taken them, you'd be a straight-laced suburban housewife that's into cheap wine, Applebee's HH on a Friday night, and pontoon boats blasting Morgan Wallen.

That’s pretty close to our list. Remove UNC, add Wisconsin and CU (which is basically UT from the mid-90s, and rising). We’ll probably toss an application over to Berkeley, too.

Yep, reputation is a trailing indicator.  In both directions.  It will take a decade for the damage to really affect UT's reputation.  The problem is, even if UT manages to right the ship afterwards....it'll take at least that long for the reputation to recover.

I mean...you know there's at least a 25-30% chance of this happening, right?  In fact, they might bulldoze the LBJ library to make room for it.

reverse polarity I would be an alpha male driving RAM truck with with my nuts swinging side to side with a bald eagle mural wrap on my tailgate squawking "MERICA!!!" as I drive on the highway (the bald eagle squawking not me).

the suburban housewife doesn't sound so bad so long as I can scissor with my tennis partner after long margarita lunches. I'd drop the rest, though on a pontoon boat with different music isn't half bad way to spend a thursday night.

I guess the ”great” sports is subject to wide interpretation. Nor did my initial post suggest a limit of one possible remaining school.  But, I do have a fondness for U Dub now that you bring it up.

i'm afraid this is going to be universal to every public institution in a red state.  some will jump in more willingly than others, but this looks to be the direction things are heading.

I didn't go to UT, but know plenty of people that did.  What's ironic is people my age would have been attending UT when it was easy as shit to get in, then reaped the rewards later down the road of a "prestigious degree" without having to put in the work.  Now kids struggle like hell to get in and later down the road their degree won't be worth a shit.

I just find it funny that so many of the shit talkers about how prestigious UT is are the mouth breathing right wing chucklefucks.  I've brought this up to more than a few of them and they have basically zero to say.  It's actually hilarious.  But what can they say?  It's a fact those viewpoints are sinking UT as far as academic reputation.  These are people in business/medicine etc, not Wayne who graduated in the 80's (and posts in DT) when any resident with a pulse was getting into UT.

Fuck you, buddy.  One of my good friends is a dude named Wayne who graduated in the 80's when any resident with a pulse was getting into UT.

Oh.  Wait. Okay, now that you mention it....point made.

As the father of a soon-to-be sophomore at UT, who is firmly in the moderate-liberal camp, not much as far as I can tell.  Not yet.  In 10 years, who knows?  But in 10 years, who knows anything?

Good school. Boring campus / town.

Actually it's not that boring.  I've spent a lot of time in Champaign-Urbana.  My cousins grew up there and my sis went to grad school there.  It's an outpost but those kids have a lot of fun.

Had you not dropped, there's a small, but not zero, chance you could have won their trust and by virtue of that, their gender's secrets.

And had that happened, wow we would come and say "Don Brisket, give us the secrets."  We would ask with respect. We would offer friendship. We would think to call you "Godfather."

I took that class (and finished it) in 1988. The prof was smoking hot and it was just me and two other guys in the glass with a bunch of women. I look back at it fondly. Only class I attended a study group in.
I remember we read The Bell Jar and Handmade’s Tail.

Yeah....DEFINITELY a different class.  The prof was an obviously angry short-haired lesbian who smelled of patchouli and bitterness, and the ladies signed up for the class weren't much different.

Now, my Plan II seminar called "Love and Vengeance," or another one called "Mental Illness in Popular Literature?"  Yeah, they were like 14 person seminars, and I was one of two guys in each of them (and, we read The Bell Jar, and Love in the Time of Cholera).  Was an evening seminar.  We'd then pick up and continue the conversation at Quack's for another couple of hours over coffee and such.  Me.  And a dozen smart gals.  I was happier than a pig in shit.

We did a spur of the moment road trip there one weekend and had a blast. Highlight of the trip was getting pulled over going 107mph in a sweet Ford Escort by an Illinois state trooper with enough booze in the car to open a liquor store. Not a one of us was over 21. We paid the fine errrr bribe with the last couple of bucks being change scrounged from under the seats.

But no worries, we had a plan. We went down the road and hit an ATM. We bought some snacks and shoplifted more. One guy in our crew took our last couple of dollars and won $500 on a scratch off Lotto ticket. Sweatergawd later in the trip when funds were low, same guy won $200 with another scratch off ticket. He was like a God damn slot machine that always paid out.
