Moseley is possession receiver who would be an afterthought on the last few Texas teams.   The fact that he’s being counted on is a hint about what we can expect at WR.

This is as bad a take as I’ve seen in awhile. Did Mark Stanco steal your keyboard? is this a joke? Did you feel that way about Matthew Golden too?

Mosely isn’t slow and put up great freshman numbers with dogshit qb and little other offensive options for defense to worry about.

Hey, it turns out that “let’s wait until August” was correct. As opposed to ruling him out of specific games and an entire season in January. Who could have known.

I mean, I know one person. It's been fun for me to watch. I never discounted the possibility. But I also never doubled down against the naysayers either, other than to like your posts. I've lived vicariously through you on this.

It was crazy to watch. Last week an OTF mod made a post that was basically “Hey guys, he’s gonna play early and often. Starting in Columbus.” And in that thread you had people saying “I bet we don’t see him at all until midseason.”

I feel confident this Texas defensive front seven is going to prison rape the Ohio State offense. I don't know about the rest of the matchups, but entering the season that to me looks like by far the biggest mismatch heading into this game.

Some points to consider:

- The shuffling of offensive linemen two weeks before the game. I'm not saying Ohio State can't have a good OL by the end of the season, but it's obvious to me they don't have any easy solutions for their starting 5, much less consistent back ups. They brought in 3 portal OL this past offseason after relying on portal guys last year. That's a strategy of desperation forced on to them by inadequate high school recruiting and development. I watched Oregon get butt fucked early in the season along their OL, but by midseason they had turned things around and really had a decent squad there. Ohio State can do the same. But they need reps, they need stability, and they're not going to have it for the season opener.

- Brian Hartline is now their OC. I don't understand what Ryan Day's role is going to be there after handing over all the responsibilities to Chip Kelly last season. I assume it's going to be something. He's a control freak (all head coaches are to some degree) but he figured out if he hired his mentor in Chip Kelly he could relinquish duties. Well, Hartline doesn't have Kelly's gravitas. He's wholly dependent on Day for his career arc, having been brought to Ohio State at the same time. How they manage their responsibilities will be something of a work in progress. Cracks in communication and the blame game aren't stress tested in the offseason. They're stress tested when things don't go well in the game, and the head person doesn't want to blame himself for the failures. Which isn't specifically a Ryan Day thing. It's a human thing. There's going to be inconsistencies in the approach, and an inability to have a convicted response when things go poorly.

- New quarterback. They're saying it's a competition, but it's not. It's going to be Sayin. Day wants to keep Kienholz engaged and put a fire under Sayin's butt. Similar to how Sarkisian handled the Card/Ewers competition, when it was always going to be Ewers. It's a pretty common coaching tactic. I don't really care. I've seen both approaches work. I think people get too worked up about this stuff. But neither of them have experience under fire. That's going to effect how well the offense runs.

- untested running backs. I assume someone they have back there is going to be uber talented. We know about Peoples from his time in HS. They like Donaldson, too. But the pair they had last year were special. I don't know how these two are going to compare to what they lost, but going into the game I'm going to assume there's at least a short term step back.

______________________________________________

Compare this to the other side of the LOS.

- Everyone across the country keeps talking about the edge room across the country. I'm not going to go into detail with a Texas audience. You guys could teach me about our roster there. I'm just going to say this will be the best group of edge rushers Ohio State sees all season, including the post season. In their first game. This is not going to be pretty.

- One thing that is being underestimated is our DTs. Now, this could very well be koolaid talking. It's happened to me before. Maybe we see a huge dropoff in production here from last year. The thing is, I assumed we'd see a big dropoff last year. I looked for signs of it, and was constantly complaining that early opponents had success running inside in ways that wouldn't have been possible with Murphy and Sweat in there the year before. As if it's completely normal to feature the two best DTs in the country on the same team. But the truth is, last year's DTs, while not as good individually, were in some ways better as a collective. It took me at least until midseason to begrudgingly admit I was wrong about the position in the preseason.

Well, I like this group even better. Again, this could be the koolaid talking, but I think Breverd and Watson are going to be an outstanding pair of first guys in. I feel like they are going to absolutely rag doll the OSU interior OL. But then we're bringing in Shaw and January, and there's no real drop off. Kanu gets some snaps against his former team and quickly realizes he could be playing more if he had just stayed put. Sharma does Sharma things for a few snaps. Maybe Charles gets some time. The thing is, I feel like us hardcore Texas fans view the DT position as a source of strength heading into the year that NO ONE in the national media or on the Ohio State side is giving us credit for. I feel confident the DT play is going to be one of the biggest revelations coming out of this game.

- I don't know if it should be combined with the edge players or not, but our linebacking corps is stupendous, especially in terms of being heat seeking missiles. Ty'Anthony Smith's emergence is just icing on an already well made Charlie Strong style cake. Hill is receiving as much attention as almost any defender in the country, so we're not exactly flying under the radar at this position. I just think it adds to the DLs coming dominance.

- Kwiatkowski and the rest of the defensive staff. As opposed to Ohio State, there's a lot of continuity on the defensive side of the ball, especially in the front seven. Obviously we've seen a lot of changes in the back end, but I'm not talking about our secondary matchup here. I just think a lot of players know their roles. The ones learning their roles are doing so next to players who have been in the program, led by coaches who are convicted in what they're doing and know how to successfully convey assignments. Everyone understands their chain of command. When mistakes happen there's not going to be an overt or subconscious scapegoating as to who's fault it was.

______________________________________________

I don't think any of this guarantees a Texas win. I like our chances heading into the game, but shit happens. Turnovers. Hostile crowd. Ohio State has amazing players. Ryan Day just won a national championship.

But I feel confident if the Buckeyes come out on top, it's going to be because they were able to overcome a complete annihilation upfront on offense.

Blake Munroe’s Scrimmage Notes:

- Let’s start with the biggest news first.

Matthew Caldwell was the 2nd string QB today and looked considerably better than the other two backups, according to the source.

- There were some minor injuries today, which included Jelani McDonald’s foot, Trevor Goosby’s hand and Maraad Watson getting a little banged up.

- I’m told for the second scrimmage in a row, wide receiver Emmett Moseley was held out.

- Safety Jonah Williams was also held out while nursing a hamstring issue.

- The offense worked a lot out of 12 personnel. The starting tight ends in that package were Jack Endries and Spencer Shannon.

- Ryan Wingo had another phenomenal day, picking up where he left off last weekend.

- When they went 3+ wide, the receivers were Wingo, Parker Livingstone and DeAndre Moore.

- Daylan McCutcheon and Kaliq Lockett were the other two receivers rotating in with the starters today.

- Tight end Nick Townsend showed flashes of brilliance again and had some big plays.

- Spencer Shannon was described as a player who won’t have a lot of yards after the catch, but will still come away with receptions.

- Running back James Simon was specifically mentioned as having a big day.

- Graceson Littleton, Hero Kanu and Cole Brevard all rotated in today with the 1s.

Baxter will be a difference maker this year, if he can stay healthy. Couple reasons:

1. He was the best blocking freshman RB I have ever seen. Probably the #1 reason he started the season as freshman. Trust me Arch is elated to have Baxter blocking for him, instead of someone like Blue. Keep in mind many anticipate Texas to take more play action shots. I cannot stress how important a good blocking RB can be for the passing game.

This is the biggest piece, IMO.  We saw Quinn deliver the ball too early, self-sack or worse multiple times once DC's wised up and attacked Wisner with cross-dog & green dog blitzes last year.   Tre is a willing blocker, but didn't always pick up the right guy or have enough body to be effective in the pickup.  Beyond the sacks and rushed throws, it seemed Quinn stopped trusting that part of the protection, even when the block was made satisfactorily.  Giving Arch that extra half second and the belief that he can stand in there opens up the playbook even more.

I can replay that injury in my mind's eye to this day.  I was there, a few rows up in the end zone.  I was looking downfield, I'm guessing OU was on about their 40? and I saw him plant and then buckle.  It was bad right from the jump.

Yes, arthroscopic-assisted ACLs are very different, as are rehab protocols now, than what was done a couple of generations ago. Technically, I would call the LCL (lateral collateral ligament) the anterior part of the PLC (postero-lateral corner, not to be confused with the PCL, posterior cruciate ligament). Depending on whether he avulsed (pulled off) or tore mid-substance on his LCL, he might have had different surgeries; with a high-level RB like him, my guess is that he had some graft sewn in there unless it was obviously strictly avulsed. I can't remember with certainty, but I think the early concern was that Baxter had torn PCL, too. Not tearing PCL and not tearing more of the posterior portions of the PLC (eg Popliteus) would take some of my concerns away regarding aggressive early motion in therapy and hence help him be better positioned for a potentially faster and more complete recovery. Once he is this far out, his recovery trajectory is more about how rapidly he can re-train and how well he re-adapts to full go.

Your TE section fails to even mention Endries. Seems like a big gap in your analysis

As for your DT section, you emphasize age a lot, but you fail to mention Baker as DT coach. Returns are early but Collins and Broughton borth did jack shit until Baker got here and developed them. There’s a non zero chance Baker is really good, and can get more out of our older transfers than you might expect, plus young player development better than expected. Broughton sucked until his literal last year, and collins was inconsistent, so it’s not like they weren’t old and strong enough their junior years. It was teaching.

regarding endries, i almost kind of purposefully left him off the discussion to avoid jinxing him. first, he's from cal. while he could be a tre watson level success, i am naturally skeptical of a cal guy having success. two, as amazing as steve has been in the transfer portal, it's extremely bizarre but every one of his tight end transfers has been a calamity. just glad endries isn't from bama. i don't put a lot of stock into the preseason grown ass man koolaid but i am secretly hopeful based on his previous success...just felt like if i said his name that it would end in disaster. hoping that between him, washington, townsend, and shannon, we are at least reliable at pass catching and if we can have some blocking that makes us multiple in their formations, then bonus. hard to see them being as effective as helm and sanders though.

i do believe in baker. he was a great replacement when bo bailed and he did a hell of a job last year. i think he's a very good coach and i think our dts are going to be great again starting next year. at dt, age does matter and your points about collins and broughton reiterate that reality. collins and broughton were developing the whole time...before baker got here. while i do believe he enhanced their performance last year through coaching, it is not a coincidence that they started to really have an impact in the rotation in 2023 (there is no disputing that both of them really started to flash at a much higher level in 23 than previously) as 22 and 23 year olds and they were ready to dominate in 24. but i still believe they were both more talented than any of the three senior transfers. if baker is able to get shaw, brevard, kanu, and january as a four man rotation to play at even 85% of the level we've seen the last two years and can spell them effectively with terry, hills and charles at the right times and the occasional mix it ups with sde play in the middle from burke and vasek, then the front 7 will be devastating. but, that is just the on paper talking.

Helm was an OK, but not a great blocker. Sanders even less so. Helm had really good hands and decent athleticism for a TE and Sark was a master at scheming him open. I'm optimistic about Endries based on reports and his previous film as a pass catcher and getting open. Blocking is the question mark for him, IMO. It sounds as though Shannon can block and is a fairly reliable catcher, but not a plus athlete.

IT scrimmage notes

Spoiler

Game situations included: length-of-the-field drives (1s vs. 2s) and red zone lockout (1s vs. 1s, live), followed by length-of-the-field and two-minute drill again at thud tempo.

The teams ran around 90 plays total. The defense won the red zone period, while the offense took the two-minute drill. Last week, it was the reverse.

Like last week, there was a lot of 12 personnel vs Base defense.

Overall, it was a much cleaner scrimmage than the week prior. Tackling was sharper, and there were far fewer penalties and turnovers. The Longhorns appear to be trending toward peaking in Week 1.

Quarterbacks

Arch Manning looked “way better than last week,” with no turnovers through the air. Trey remains the backup, and the reserve quarterbacks had a good day overall. Everyone protected the football, except for one fumble that “got treated like a school ID.”

Offensive Line

Much improved on penalties compared to last week. Jaydon Chatman looked comfortable. He didn’t win every rep but generally held his own.

There’s nothing to worry about with Trevor Goosby.

Running Backs

Christian Clark saw a lot of snaps, making defenders miss and consistently moving the chains. CJ Baxter put together another strong practice. Ryan Niblett also received reps in 21 personnel looks.

Wide Receivers

Kaliq Lockett ran with the ones at boundary receiver and caught a 30-yard deep ball on a double move (though Arch may have been sacked on the play).

DeAndre Moore, who continues as both kick and punt returner, made several nice catches.

Daylan McCutcheon performed well with the first team.

Ryan Wingo had a big gain on an over route.

Defensive Line

Hero Kanu had a strong day overall and blocked a field goal. Colin Simmons was disruptive all afternoon — his jersey was shredded, a clear sign of offensive linemen grabbing to slow him down. Cole Brevard was also mentioned for his performance. Brad Spence made multiple plays in the backfield.

Linebackers

The linebackers had a solid, assignment-sound day and were strong in coverage. The backups also impressed, including Marshall Landwher. Ty’Anthony Smith rotated between the ones and saw action at both Sam and Will.

Cornerbacks

Manny Muhammad had an active day, making plays in run support and coverage. Jaylon Guilbeau was steady, though got beat a time or two.

Star

Graceson Littleton worked at nickel, with Keynodo Hudson coaching the group hard. Hudson takes no prisoners.

Safeties

It was a relatively quiet day, but tackling was solid across the group. All four of Michael Taaffe, Derek Williams, Jordon Johnson-Rubell, and Xavier Filsaimerotated with the ones.

Baxter ready to go against Ohio State is really impactful, even if he’s not fully back athletically. He’s such a good pass blocker and catcher, plus he can actually run between the tackles. Opens up so much on offense.

OB scrimmage notes

Spoiler

Texas held its second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday, and Orangebloods was able to connect with team sources for some updates. Some quick-hitter notes …

The pass protection from the offensive line was very good, but I’m told the run blocking really struggled. The backs were routinely getting stuffed, sometimes behind the line of scrimmage. One person said Tre Wisner looked the best before being taken out of the scrimmage.

In particular, I’m told left guard Neto Umeozulu had some struggles today. Connor Stroh got some left guard work and he looked solid.

Brandon Baker at right tackle was the one offensive lineman who was singled out as playing well. Trevor Goosby got banged up a little, played through it a bit before they pulled him for the day.

The entire D-line looked really good, were making plays in the backfield.

One person thought Matthew Caldwell was hands down the second-best quarterback today, behind Arch. He was the first guy out there with the back-ups, and it sounds like he had a second straight good scrimmage.

K.J. Lacey probably got the most play behind Caldwell, per one source. He got a fair amount of action. He made some good throws, but there were times when his accuracy was a bit hit or miss today.

Hearing Ryan Wingo went off today. “He had a great scrimmage,” one person said.

Graceson Littleton played a bunch and was out there with the ones again, and one source said he really played well.

Colin Simmons, Ethan Burke and Colton Vacek all made plays.

Jack Endries had a good day, made several plays.

Kobe Black had some nice breakups.

Arch threw a long TD on a wheel route where there wasn’t a defender within about 20 yards of the back. It was a pretty throw by Arch, but also an easy toss. One person I talked to said Arch looked really good overall today.

One of the back-up QBs, way down the depth chart, had an INT but overall the throwing was pretty clean today. Arch did have a fumbled snap on the first drive but it was a pretty clean day by the QBs overall, which is obviously a positive.

Jack Bouwmeester was hammering the ball again today … long punts, good hangtime.

Shipley did really well with field goals. He did drill the upright on one from about 50 but had plenty of leg and had a solid day overall.

There's just almost nothing I agree about in your post. In regards to Endries, ignoring the jinxing and superstition part, you don't like him because his first school was Cal? As if players aren't drafted from shit schools or even DII schools all the time? As if players don't get overlooked from recruiters in HS and turn into great players at the college level? Don't tell Aaron Rogers he's never going to be successful in the NFL because he went to Cal, bud. Or Tony Gonzalez. Or Marshawn Lynch. Or DeSean Jackson.

I feel like you're just talking in bizarre circles regarding the DT situation. You think Collins and Broughton performed better because they were older, but they were ass literally the year before. If you want to make a case that an 18 year old isn't the same as a 22 year old, ok, but lets not fucking pretend that a 21 year old and a 22 year old are night and day, because they're not. And it completely negates your point of "Well they were developing the entire time in the background." Well, if that was true, why the fuck did they suck as 21 year olds and perform balls out as 22 year olds? Your stance makes zero sense.

Your belief that they were "more talented" than the 3 senior transfers we got is based on...what? Sure, Collins was a 5 star. So was one of our transfers, Shaw. When older transfers come from other schools, they're just not that talented, but when they underperform at Texas under Bo Davis, they were just developing and waiting for the light to come on? That's horseshit. I'll tell you when the light came on, it's when Kenny Baker got here.

If he’s healthy he is at no more risk than any other football player on any given play. This isn’t re-aggravating an already tender ankle. Meanwhile you’re robbing him of valuable reps against live competition that would further his mental recovery and development. How are you even putting forth this position seriously? Sark even said something like, and I'm paraphrasing here, "We brought in Caldwell in case Manning sprains an ankle or something at OSU and we have someone with experience we can bring in." It wasn't 100% definitive, but pretty close.

And just reading between the lines, I don't think it will be too long before Lacey is ahead of Owens in the pecking order.
