If we kicked a FG at the 1/2 yard line and lost 12-14, everyone here would want Sark fired. And they'd be right.

Yep, kicking a FG there would be extremely deflating. If you can't pick that up, you deserve to lose. And we did.

Would have liked to see how the game unfolded when right after that, we get a safety from a hold in the endzone but it's offset. It would then be 7-2 and getting good field position and can start to build a little momentum. I know they ended up punting but wasn't the same.

I thought Arch should've run more today than he did. It's almost like he felt compelled to stay in the pocket. Maybe more rollouts, too?

We need more improvisation, especially against a good defense.

I thought the same thing on the staying in the pocket. Felt like a ewers game in that regard except with arch you actually trust he will do something with his legs if given the chance.

but there was just no excuse for what his arm did with no pressure.
Although I get not wanting to risk him getting blasted in game 1 trying to make something happen with his feet.

that said, we’re not going to see anything different during the month of September. “Stay in the pocket, hit the check down/throw it away” will be the mantra until at least Oct 4.

tosu rushing 34/77 2.3ypc

despite arch we should have won

and 14-12 feels a hell of a lot different

2 empty trips with goal-to-go just doesn't work for me

He's a moron.  Sark has no feel for the game and force shit all the time.  He gives huge momentum and morale to the other team when they stop his freebies 4th and short calls.  Year 5 and I don't see his dumbass making any improvements here because he wants to win his way.

Yeah, one that played against a Heisman QB and NFL speedy WR. Colt wasn’t the reason we lost that game.

VY was shit in Dallas his rs freshman year.

He was shit against Tech and had Mock bail him out to pull out a win at the end of that season.

He was shit in Dallas his sophomore year.

He was shit against 3-9 KU late that season until converting 4th-and-18. All 3 plays prior to that were shit.

Then Michigan happened. Then his junior year happened.

The greatest Horn most people here actually saw in person had some truly awful performances. Y’all just don’t remember them.

My concern for this team is Sark called this game like he had zero confidence in his 3rd year QB and the offensive ability to run a more complex scheme.

Looking back at the first 2 quarters and this shit was vanilla. Very little motion. Basic 11 and 12 personnel sets. Nothing challenging OSU's defense as they sat back and played in a coverage shell.

Ap the question is why did he not trust this offense? And it's extremely concerning if a 3rd year QB can't be trusted to run it.

I guess initially you could argue he was trying to see what Patricia was doing and seeing how much success we could have on the ground. But you don’t need a whole half for that.

Don't worry. If there's one thing a QB can fix in a few weeks with some tinkering, it's fundamentals 🙄

Hard to take this post seriously when you make no mention of our continued redzone ineptitude. I'm sure year 5 is when we'll finally figure it out, right?

Vince also flashed big time in that game against number 1 OU. Arch has been on campus longer than VY was at that point, and has had a hell of a lot more resources than VY ever had, yet he hasn't flashed against any team of quality.

Now that I’ve had a chance to sober up and get drunk again.

all the concerns I had coming into the season were founded.  We have no offensive firepower and we still have sark who’s the Dak Prescott of coaches. We can beat the fuck out of shit but well coached programs that win all the time make this team look like it forgot football from scheme to strategy.   Good thing we are on the floor and no where to go from here but up

Posted (edited)

My biggest concern is that with the loss, we can only afford 1 more regular season loss and still make the playoffs. None of the 9 win teams last year made the playoffs, so between the games @Florida, @Georgia, Red River, aggy, and Vandy/@MSST/@Kentucky/Arkansas we can afford to lose one of those. I would still expect us to accomplish that, but only if the offense can at least be somewhat competent. When we face a top 25 defense, we need to still be scoring once per quarter to get the job done, not once per game. In the post game presser, Arch said he hoped that this was his worst game of the year when they look back at the season in retrospect. Hopefully he's right.

Ha!  What?!!!

You have no concerns?  Well you should.  My team had a 5 star can't miss QB a few years ago, and then he started a game.  That was a rough year.  Next year they got a transfer QB and went to the final game...but that was... like...the next year...with a different QB.

Who are the playmakers on this offense? Who are we scheming opportunities for? That part of our offense was non-existent yesterday. We couldn’t find a single mismatch?

Who has that something extra like a Worthy or Blue? Sanders and Helm were a part of every plan the last two seasons.

Outside of Arch’s performance, that’s my concern. All knee jerk, admittedly this was one game. I don’t like what I saw out of our punt returner either.

We had plenty of guys running wide open and arch had plenty of time to throw and wasn’t anywhere close to first play of the game Moore is open in the seam for 25 yards. Arch misses by 8. Of that happens all year we are fucked. I’ve seen arch go an entire game without missing a throw. I don’t think this is him.
there was probably more pressure on him than any QB in like 20 years and he woefully failed the moment.
From here on he has to play football and that’s it. We are a ton better than every team on our schedule other than Georgia from here on out.
I watch 4 games at the same time in every window plus one on my phone. I saw everyone of consequence play. This Texas team is better than all of them (including OSU and the box score showed that) if our QB is not actively shooting itself in the dick at the QB position.
My bet is that doesn’t happen again.
This team will make the playoffs and it might win it all. We shall see.

Getting rattled by a good defense to start the season is humbling. It all uphill from here. The only other defense on the schedule that can give us problems like OSU is Georgia. Next week we'll take care of business against San Jose State and Arch will have a chance to better his throws. Sark's play calling has to get better though.

P.S. Parker Livingstone about to go off!

Posted

Yeah I'm not loving that inside the 10 yard line is death for our scoring ability. Sark has a real weakness in getting points in the red zone - only 7 points off of four trips yesterday. That shit isn't gonna win games.

Disagree. I think he had too much confidence in Arch. If he throws more roll outs and screens, instead of pocket passes trying to find soft spots in coverage, we win.

The defense is going to be awesome. It's gonna fuck some shit up, this is the third consecutive season the interior of the defensive line was retooled and it's still gonna be stout. A lot of concerns on offense, new QB same issues so it's leading me to believe it's not strictly a QB related issue. I firmly believe that Texas will be 8-1 when traveling to Athens. That game will be another sobering reality check, UGA will skull fuck the Horns. Sark is clueless how to contend with their defense and their defense is going to be better than the rebuilt defense Texas faced in the Shoe and Stockton brings another element the Texas defense didn't have to account for today, he was more than adequate filling in last season in the SEC championship making plays at critical times and will be much better this season with the reps he received as the #1 guy. I feel Texas will finish 10-2 which is a good season and with that 1 conference loss will play for an SEC championship. Bama isn't going to be elite. LSU looks like they'll be a solid team, but the conference will be up for grabs.

Very happy with the OL and punter.

Defense was good, especially since our 3 All-Americans were no-shows.

Transfer TE is going to be plenty good enough.

RBs are nice, tough runners, but no burst whatsoever.

We have a shitload of young electric guys (according to their recruiting rankings) that won’t crack the depth chart at WR or RB, why not put one of them back there to return kicks instead of slowass Wisner?

I think Arch and the WRs will be OK. The next 3 weeks will help them catch their breath and we’ll find out what they are made of against Florida.

Our identity needs to be established in the run. We need to punish people with the run. Outside of Wingo, we do not have the kinds of athletes to dominate offensively. But with our O-line, with a stable of backs, and the threat of Arch to run, that has to be our identity.

If our identity is four wide with Arch improvising, we’re going nowhere. If our identity is the passing game, we are not going to the playoff. We saw Quinn have games like this, where he could hardly complete a pass. And we lost those games, because Sark was stubborn as shit with it

Run the damn ball. Establish that identity. The passing game will progress week by week.

This.. I think Arch was just in his own head and we won’t see him look like that again.

Concerns:

1. I think Arch will be fine, but when you look like that for 3Q, you have to have a concern

2. WRs got handled. Not much separation

3. RBs get what the OL blocks and that is pretty much it. Lacking any play making there

Positive:

1. OL looked pretty solid on initial watch

2. Defense was good

3. Littleton is going to be a star

Here’s my concern - we all knew arch needed to be a game manager - and the OL actually played pretty well - no sacks (maybe 1 for no loss), limited pressures and a decent running outcome. Arch was playing like dog shit. tOSU was dropping in coverage making it really hard for Arch.

putting aside the 1-4 scoring in the red zone, we had some offense working. Hell we racked up over 300 yards.

so what is my concern?

tOSU *gave* us 4.5 yards per carry or we made that happen - doesn’t matter - keep taking it until the safeties have to come up. Be boring, run the ball.

the reality is the championship teams win with defense. EVERY offense struggles against elite defenses. And if you can eek out a decent clip running the ball and get to the red zone four times and take the points you can win even when you struggle.

so putting aside the red zone shit brigade, and sark’s addiction to going for it and aversion to the FG, my biggest concern is he won’t lean heavily on the run game when it’s working regardless of why it’s working.

Just now, TexArcher said:

People need to understand that there is some validity to this point of view.  It’s confusing w/ players that come onto campus w/ a lot of hype (like many Texas recruits at prime positions arrive with).  But some players arrive and perform to expectations immediately while others take time. And still others never perform to expectations.

Cool. You think that's going to be a problem against any of the shit ass teams on our schedule going forward?

We don't play the 85 Bears followed by the 86 NYG, followed by the Ray Lewis Baltimore Ravens.  We play a collection of the lame, crippled and halt.  Plus Georgia.

Aggy just got their ass cheeks spread by UTSA between the tackles. OU got in a cripple fight with someone exceptionally shitty.  Florida might be ok, but I sort of doubt it.  We are better than Georgia but we played better than them in the SEC title game and against OSU at the shoe and managed to lose both those games. Could that happen again? Sure.  But we aint losing to kentucky or arkansas or aggy or vandy with this defense and kicking game. It's just not happening and if you can't see that you are a prisoner of the moment, blind, or a room temperature IQ retard.  Or some combination of all three.

Clip it, save it and then shove it up your own ass at the end of the year when I'm right.

Arch did ok in two starts last year and by all accounts was progressing well this year. He just completely fell apart under the spotlight the media had on him. Sark may not be a great game day coach, but he is tuned into these kids and he obviously knew Arch was cracking under the pressure. The offense he ran in the first half was conservative to the point of being weird. Because of the media, things take place at Texas that don't happen anywhere else, like the spectacle of this young man being publicly humiliated yesterday. I think it's one of the reasons this program struggled for so many years. I'm not sure what can be done about it, but if I were Sark I would take a more confrontational tone with all the analysts and reporters and call out the hyperbolic expectations and clownish way this program gets covered.

Posted

I still expect this team to at worst lose 3 games and at best lose 2 games.  I won't believe they can beat a top 5 team with Sark until I see it so that means Georgia is the only team left on our schedule we should lose to.  I think that loss was more on Sark than Arch.  Yeah, Arch missed way too many easy throws (the ones on the last drive were brutally bad) but he only had one interception and no fumbles.  The pick he threw was on their 30-yard line or something so it's not like he turned it over and gave them amazing field position.  We watched Ewers literally give the other team double digit points a game when he played bad.  The entire game plan in the first half looked like a Greg Davis afraid to call explosive plays and settle for the punt strategy.   Seemed like most of our runs were up the middle, no screens, no trickery, no motion, no gadget plays.  It looked like a game plan for when you play Sam Houston State the week before you play OU or something like that.

My biggest pet peeve with Sark is that no matter what he calls on first down (run or pass), if the play doesn't work and it is second and long, he will call a run play up the middle like 99% of the time.  Even if that play gets 3 yards you are left with 3rd and long and that is why drives consistently stall.  You can't expect to convert third downs all day long.  Eventually you have to try and throw beyond the sticks or get some run plays that get you a first down on first or second down and that seems to be a struggle for the way Sark calls a game.

I hate to say this, but I think Arch just was in his own head. He just didn’t look right for about 75% of the game. I am not sure you can take much from this game other than that. He let the pressure get to him
