i won’t be surprised if they look more human at some point. we do have an amazing defense, but they really did struggle to love the ball against us. i think they’ll lose 2 or 3 themselves.

People need to recalibrate their expectations.  The preseason #1 ranking was all based on hype.  This team reminds of me the 2006 team with Colt as a redshirt freshman.  Full of talent and NFL players but green and inexperienced.  I see is dropping 2 more games unless we see big improvement.  The good thing is we have a whole month to work on these things and many are fixable.  Arch needs to work on touch on his balls and some of these WR drops with stop.  He is throwing rockets when he needs touch.  OL has to stop with the penalties.  Simmons has to stop with his penalties as well.  I expect more of the same with good moments and a wtf moments throughout the season.  This will be a totally different team back half of the season.  I just fear the mistakes will cost us more games.

This is fine but is viewing the situation through the lens of 2000’s BCS era college football. In 2025 there shouldn’t be an excuse for a program like ours to be green and inexperienced. By next year, many of the experienced players from this season will have gone to the NFL or transferred out.

I still think we’re going to improve tremendously this season. Arch will not keep throwing passes into the ground. We probably score 2 more TD’s in this game if penalties don’t stall drives. I’m still worried about play calls, especially the shitty wide receiver screens. I wish Sark would let Arch run the same play book as Ewers last season.

I like the unblocked WR screens on 3rd and long

First year starter v. third year starter, so I get it for now.

There are still going to be plenty of inexperienced top tier programs at times going forward. This take is shit.

You hating the WR screens then asking for Arch to run the Ewers playbook doesn’t really compute.

Where did I state there wouldn’t be inexperienced top tier teams going forward? Sure there will. I don’t think that with our resources and with the transfer portal that we should be one of them.

Doubling down on shit. We are not the only team with resources and therefore experienced players looking to transfer will not all end up with one team and young players will have to play. Sometimes it will be the majority.

In recent years, we've sputtered a fair bit in OOC home games against pedestrian opponents. That's why I predicted "only" a 27-point win today. I didn't know what the spread was and couldn't have even told you SJSU's mascot or team colors. Just operating off a vibe that we wouldn't suddenly hit on all cylinders offensively, despite a lot of folks evidently thinking we would.

I get what you are saying but you also can’t get a bunch of transfers and expect a well oiled machine.  FSU and Ole Miss have proved that.  I still think this is one of the most talented teams we have seen at Texas.  I also realize they need time to gain experience.  Hopefully our talent can come through despite the mistakes until the team hits their stride.  I can see us running the table and I can see an 8-4 team.  Let’s see how they work.

Also, it’s hard to take much of anything from this game and the next few. We are running plain vanilla offense and not going to show much on tape.  But you can very clearly see the faults.  Drops, penalties.  These are things that can be worked on.  Fix the easy stuff and this team can do damage.

I'm fairly satisfied. It was a good win by 31 and there's room for improvement. You can't complain about 4 turnovers. Arch did good after a slow start. He's going to improve. This is the tune up he needed before Ohio State. Running game was decent. We're still lacking a home run threat. WRs were average outside of Livingston who will be a star. TEs were great. Defense is championship level. Penalties are still an issue. We need to beat UTEP by 50. Glad we kicked a FG for once.

I think we’re seeing the training wheels come off slowly but surely. We obviously lost a shit load of experience and talent. Still have talent, but not the experience. Guessing that’s why the offense looks so vanilla so far. Got to master the basics before building and adding onto it.
Also, we know Sark doesn’t like to run the quarterback, but at some point, he’s got to have a package of plays to utilize Manning‘s mobility. Right?? Right?!!! maybe saving that for SEC play?

A lot of players are getting snaps under their belts.

That's really, really, really important.

So 16 penalties to 5 this year with SEC refs doing both games.  Fuck the SEC.  Yes, I get most of ours are deserved, but 5 penalties in 8 quarters against the opposition?

Corso last headgear game

This one we got the hillbilly head ref he’s usually pretty decent

Yeah, we had something like 14 guys drafted and have 16 new starters on this team, including QB. The #1 preseason ranking really screwed up people’s expectations for this team, especially early in the year.

Having said that, it is pretty disappointing Arch isn’t further along in his development in year 3 and the coaching lols disappointing with the same issues that have cropped up in past years. The question about the coaching will be answered with how much this team develops over the course of the season. I did expect us to be further along at this point, though.

We opened the season at tOSU with like 16 new starters and had the ball with a chance to tie with 1 minute left. We’re not in a very different place than them right now. And it’s entirely possible we’re better than them by them by the end of the year.

Crazy how much holding got called against us today but Florida is holding with impunity against USF and getting away with it.

18/19 with 4 TDs is good no matter what. Arch does that and this whole board creams their pantaloons

I’m sure we would. But that tells us nothing about the whether or not OSU is actually any good. Again, they are playing grambling, an FCS school, in the era of NIL.

Mmmmmk

Do you think that is indicative of the quality of their offense against playoff caliber teams? What did you learn about their offense from their game today?

I’m there was a lot of pressure on the QB and tight windows to throw into.

Florida St as a team was 16/20 with 6 TDs. Irrelevant stats are irrelevant

i never agreed with us being no.1. i couldn’t help but be reminded of the michigan team from last year that was preseason top 5 despite losing so many key players to the nfl. we beat that team in the big house, and they ended up going 6-6. now i’ve never thought that we’ll be anywhere near 6-6, but my expectations were never that we were going to be the best team in the country, especially not right out of the gate.
ive been an outspoken critic of preseason rankings, and a proponent of not even debuting the rankings until the first or second week of october, and these overhauled two-deeps for major programs who pump out nfl talent are a huge reason why. you don’t lose 25 nfl draft picks from your previous two teams, break in a new o line, new qb, rb coming off a missed season, new wr and te room, etc, and just say, “yeah that’ll still be the best team america.”
have we been disappointing? yes. that’s a solid, firm yes. but the folks out there who are extremely angry right now must have bought into that undeserved preseason hype, because imo this team has been mildly disappointing with lots of potential for growth, and not this hopeless, abject failure that so many others apparently see.

Agreed. The pundits thought we would get even better replacing most of the O line, NFL TE/WRs, NFL secondary, and 3-year starter at QB. lol.

Those days where Bama reloaded are over with parity, the portal, and NIL(legal $)

People in this thread were alluding to our secondary being suspect and stating OSU must not actually be very good. Those first half stats suggest Sayin actually can throw the ball on bad secondaries and they have WR talent. Not difficult here.

Osu offense probably isn’t very good. That doesn’t mean he can’t throw the ball to open receivers with no pressure.

Probably about as good as we were against SJSU?

Idk I’ve seen Arch miss multiple wide open receivers so could go either way.

Quadrupling down on a really stupid point is something

Outside of the top 25 FCS teams, another 30 teams received votes. Grambling St was not one of those teams. So even at best, there are 55 FCS teams thought to be better than them.

The Athletic last week had SJSU ranked 96/136 FBS teams.

Combine the two and SJSU would be ranked around 100 spots higher than Grambling, probably more.

This like struggling to run against North Texas 20 years ago. This is a bad offense. Extremely bad. Ohio State is going to get run on this year, a lot.

Sounds like winning to me.

Arch is looking closer to a FR than a third year SO.  We all need to realize his level of HS competition did him no favors, he just isnt that good, yet.  Maybe he improves, but we equally could be seeing the max.  His arm talent is weak compared to many other QBs you can easily see in any other games.  Hes just not that talented.  Sark will have his work cut out for him to try and gameplan around what he does well, which honestly I dont know what that is at this point.

Palmer did a nice job on a replay showing how impatient and untrusting (timid) Arch is to throw the 2nd layer pass, over the LB, but under the safety...something QE did with ease.  Add in the lack of touch and its very concerning.  On the simple TE pass, he threw a Nolan Ryan fastball when a Charlie Hough knuckler would have sufficed, that is something a Jr should know how to execute....why are we not coaching that up?
