I thought the Republicans had a majority? Can they not convince 218 of their own to vote for a bill to fund the government?

Also, I thought this administration was all about saving money and getting historic revenue from tariffs. How did they run out of money again?

I haven't paid much attention to this because it's boring, but are they having trouble whipping votes in the House?

Utilizing government agencies as propaganda delivery needs to be high on the list of corrupt practices addressed by a future Dem leadership.

Right now, GOP house members are happy to hide behind the Senate because they don’t have enough votes for cloture.  Once the GOP majority in the Senate eliminates the filibuster you’ll see shit in the fan in the House.

So....what did this do to TSA last time?  I'm flying Friday and Sunday, and I guess I'll build in extra airport time.

They are essential but presumably will be lightly staffed as unpaid TSA workers stage a sick-out.

More troubling is the same action undergone by the air traffic controllers.

On my way to dinner last night, I heard someone on NPR report that one of the reasons the last shutdown ended was due to actions like these by TSA agents. I'd forgotten all about that.

I think the concern is that the Federal Government is using the phrase "The Radical Left" in an official post.

This is extremely dangerous rhetoric, and it's spreading.

It's what Americans voted for.

Ahhhh, democracy.

I wish this wasn’t the case but it’s sort of true.

Schumer is such a dinosaur and creature of a bygone era that anytime he trots out there, talks, shows his face, gives his opinion, or has an interview the dems lose hand and people grow angry.

He sucks. Trump loves negotiating with him because he’s lacks true control over his coalition and isn’t willing to go to the brink. Pelosi in her prime was the opposite and Trump knew that. She isn’t the same and has no control anymore.

Send in junior senators, Jeffries (he sucks too is at least the minority leader / has some semblance of power), and wildcards.

Trump ‘wins’ negotiations b/c he has no shame, weaponizes uncertainty, has no real goal or policy other than to ‘win’ or at least not personally look bad, and declares victory no matter what.

The truly rational thing to do against someone like that is to be irrational.

They are essential personnel and will be working without pay, like the ATC.

In 2018-2019, it was the flight attendants threatening to strike because of safety that eventually caused Trump to capitulate.

People will put up with the Parks being closed. Stop air travel and shit gets very fucking real.

One thing we haven’t discussed here (and I’m generally bearish on shutting the government down) is that there’s not a lot of utility in Congress having these talks if ultimately Ross Vought gets to decide the budget and size of the government.

A basic D demand should be public POTUS commitments not to try a future pocket recisson, for GOP leadership to pledge to vote down any formal recission requests, and for any shutdown layoffs to reverse. If they continue to play a stupid “heads I win, tails you lose” game on funding the government then this really will be pointless.

The White House is canceling millions of dollars that dozens of universities use to research food production, despite budget chief Russ Vought’s promise to leave that money untouched.

Using a controversial loophole to cancel federal cash at the end of the fiscal year — which comes to a close at midnight Tuesday — President Donald Trump has targeted $4 billion in federal spending on international aid and development. That includes $72 million for USAID’s Feed the Future Innovation labs, which is popular with Republicans.

From what I understand it is not a simple majority vote. They have to have some Democrat votes.

The problem with this strategy is the admin's disregard for previous commitments (which is why I think the deal has to be made in more legally binding way.  How you do that I have zero clue).

It's pretty clear that the money that is previously allocated by Congress but canceled by the executive is being spent at Trump's discretion.

Oh, every commitment they make is worthless but you at least have to make them go on record as liars. That’s not the whole strategy but it should be a part of it.

You could write it into the text of a CR then appropriations— but SCOTUS has already ruled that Presidents named Trump can do anything they want.

Aren’t the Democrats setting up for complete failure? They talk about Medicaid as one of the main reasons. But a bunch of poor people aren’t going to make a difference to enough senators. The Democrats will have to cave when the general public blames them for the shutdown.

Killing the full of Buster should be good in the long run.  You can actually have bipartisanship when you don’t need party whips in order to pass shit.

Yea getting them on record as liars really matters. Anyone supporting any negotiations is a fucking moron.

Caving for Medicaid and Obamacare subsidies now would be like picking up pennies in front of the steamroller.

Republicans chose not to negotiate. Again this isn’t good for the country, but they did this and they don’t get to do that.
Democrats shouldn’t be making offers because they would be negotiating against themselves. They need to wait until they see something that gives them more than they had before, and even then only deliver the votes if Johnson or Vance gets on the horn and announces that MasterBlaster runs Bartertown.

This is actually where I’m at. Teddy was really good at knowing what he had to do for the public good, in spite of public outcry, in order to get them to see the light once his shit worked.

Teddy ain’t walking through that door, but that’s what we need.

Shutdown-ready Trump expects Democrats to blink

It seems like everyone expects this to happen, and I agree. @Bateshorn I’m curious what the vibe is on the ground

I hate this game. As a matter of principle I don’t think the Government should ever shut down. The debt ceiling should be eliminated, for the simply reason that it has totally failed in its ostensible purpose and incentivizes playing chicken with people’s lives.

a few points on the politics:

1) For the first time I can remember, there is *zero* reason for the minority party to help the majority with this.

2) For once, I think the President’s usually excellent political instincts have failed him on two points:

First, If a prolonged shutdown happens, the GOP will wear it, and he’ll wear more of it than the Senate and House leadership. He has successfully convinced the public that he’s fully in control. He’ll actually take the blame here on the Republican side, and it will surprise him.
Second, I don’t think the Democrats will cave this time. Of course it’s a lose-lose situation, but I *think* they have realized that the price of weakness is higher than the price of a shutdown, both long-term and short-term.
The GOP will have to fix this themselves.

3) Of course, there are any number of ways the Democrats could cock this up. This is the party of Elizabeth Warren, after all. But all they really need to do here is play possum because the public doesn’t seem to expect the Government to actually shut down, and if it does, and a couple weeks go by, there’s going to be considerable heat and GOP reps and senators are going to wind up with the hot potato when the president throws it in their direction if the Dems don’t fold.

Off topic but I’m not sure why you’re shitting on Liz Warren.

Pubs have always blamed the dems when they had the senate majority but couldn’t get enough pubs to join to overcome the filibuster.  They have always taken advantage of the stupidity of the American people who don’t understanding how the government works.  Now they want to pretend the very opposite is true.  So maybe now FoxNews will spend the next few weeks explaining the filibuster,  basic legislation process including the 3 branches of government to their idiotic followers, and we will at least get a more informed electorate out of this who won’t just blame Obama and Biden for all thier problems ??  LOL.  Who am I kidding.
One good thing though… farmers aint getting that bail out $$ Trump just promised during a shut down.  Boo fuckin hoo dipshits!

Dems should shut this shit down and not give in. No one gives a fucka about ICE kidnapping citizens , about Epstein, and the war crimes. Doesn’t matter happens Dems will be blames because big cities have crime and are dangerous. Fuck it let it rip and shut it down. Don’t give in

I’m a little stoned but the more I think on it the better it sounds. Gets Epstein back in the news cycle and it’s about the only sticking power issue against Trump.
