They're down to 2 of the long term members: 84 year old Mike Love and 83 year old Bruce Johnston.  They have a strong supporting band, full of capable singers.  Mike Love sometimes sounds old and tired; but he is 84 after all.  Sometimes he sounds OK.  On occasion, John Stamos will play with them.  It would be an interesting show in 2005, maybe.

Yes.  He's quick.

There is a specific 7 day protocol that has to be followed.

He has to basically have no symptoms on Sunday before the protocol can even begin.

If he had no symptoms yesterday then he has a chance to play.

If that is not the case then he is out.

Vandy is on a mission per Pavia to play in January. I don’t envy PK’s job this week to prepare for a QB like him. If Sark trots 12 personnel to start the offense I will be hanging out at the lake this weekend. Picking off low hanging…fruit.

Interesting. Maybe that's just high school then? Also wasnt Tua out like a month with a concussion not long ago?

Concussions can be on a spectrum of severity. I've seen high school players be back at full contact practice a week later and I've seen guys miss the rest of the season. Repeated concussions tend to exhibit more severe and longer lasting symptoms.

Anyone thinking we’re going to blow out this Vandy team is crazy. This will be a close game- probably decided by 1-2 crucial plays.

I think we win a close rock fight- 13-10

Vandy's success isnt based on clever scheming and playcalling, where its a battle of coaches. It's ball control and improv play, which is a contest of athleticism.

In that respect I think this Texas team humbles them. McDonald, Littleton, Muhammad, Simmons, Hill, etc, are going to get their licks in. So long as we avoid dumb penalties.

I’m not sure where you got the info, but this is not right. The player goes into concussion protocol as soon as he/she is diagnosed. He must pass a test, that is based on a baseline test given in the off season. Once he passes that test, he is technically eligible to play.

Bobby Burton showed the protocol list on his podcast yesterday.

There are seven specific steps that each take a 24 hour period.

My worry about penalties is less about the D giving up free yardage, and more about the O losing momentum/possession, and dragging the D back onto the field.  Home field noise advantage... no excuses for them to rack up penalties this weekend.

As probably the only person on this board who watched every Troy game last year, I can speak to his game a little bit.

He started the year either second or third string... It's hard to tell because multiple guys were hurt and then QBs got switched in and switched out. Ultimately played in 8 games and won 3 of them (all of Troy's FBS wins last year). Played a decent game against Iowa.

He's got good zip on short timing routes; slants, comebacks, etc. I think this is actually the best part of his game. (We saw that against Florida).

Doesn't have great touch on the intermediate routes. Deep outs, overs, etc. I think this is where he struggles the most.

Throws a really nice deep ball... Can get 55-60 air yards when he can step into it. However, he can get locked in if he thinks he's got a winner. Couple of his picks last year were from locking in on a WR and not seeing a safety come over on a fade or not seeing a corner drop back and get underneath a corner route.

He's closer to Arch on the mobility scale than he would be to Ewers. Doesn't have the top speed of Arch, but has some escapability, can get out of the pocket, and has enough that he can threaten on a zone read.

I worry about his pocket presence with this o line. A few sacks from last year, he would get to the top of his drop and would stay there while the play developed, which gave a better angle for the blind side DE to get to him... Didn't have the greatest feel for oncoming rushers and doesn't step up into the pocket a lot. Would prefer to escape sideways rather than step up.

Can't speak to his post-snap processing as Troy didn't really ask him to do that a lot. A lot of their offense is pre snap identification of first target and then hitting timing routes. Not a ton of post snap read progression. He had some big plays last year escaping the pocket and finding his speedster down field.

Thanks for sharing. This makes me think we're really going to have to get off to a fast start to win this, because it seems like he's going to get figured out as the game goes along. I say that because the longer the game goes, Vandy is going to take away those timing routes, and we're going to see him deal with a lot of pressure like Arch does each week.

Personally, I would be ecstatic if we scored 20 points in this game. I think defense and special teams is going to have to be the difference again. Running the ball successfully would go a long way, but I'm not holding my breath there.

When did Mike Love start posting here?  If they roll out the Wilson brothers' caskets for the show so they can perform, I might concede that.

The interesting matchup is the Vandy offense vs the Texas defense. I think people under-estimate their offense based on the fact that they play extremely slow.

Vandy offense is currently #2 in the nation in pts per drive. They are extremely efficient (#4 possession efficiency) vs a Texas defense that ranks 7th in efficiency.

on the other hand, their defense is over-rated by people given the low possession numbers.

I didn’t think a lesson would have been necessary. Pet Sounds is one of the best albums of all time.

I'm praying that Sark simplifies the offense based on this. We went to this with success in the 4th of the MSU game. Just keep the shit simple and we win.

But can you answer this simple question...can he hit a wide open player either standing, or in stride, when he has time and isn't pressured?   K'thanks I'll hang up and listen.

Tuesday - Bobby

Biggest Note: "I fully expect Matthew Caldwell to be the starting quarterback for the Horns on Saturday."

Also, Bobby echos @TheBryMan81's scouting upthread on Caldwell: "Caldwell relies much more on shorter passing routes. He likes to throw on time and get the ball out quick, sort of like Quinn Ewers. And while he can zip it in there (his pass in the Florida game is an example), he seems to prefer to layer a pass and take the sure gains.

As a runner, he uses his quickness more than his power or outright speed.

Great post, btw, @TheBryMan81. I need to rep you elsewhere - your post is def worth more than +1.

In all, he’s a highly capable backup. He will do some things really well, but will have his limitations, too."

Where is Arch Manning in the concussion protocol?

Better yet, does that even matter?

Facts are, while Manning might be on schedule in the protocol to return this weekend, it doesn’t mean he will necessarily play on Saturday or that that’s what would be best for him.

As we all know, concussions have lingering effects on motor skills, everything from slowing someone’s reactive quickness to creating clouded thinking that lasts for weeks at a time.

So while Manning could “pass” every test doctors give him this week, he still might not be truly ready for something as taxing as college football, either physically or mentally. Getting hit 20-25 times in a game is probably not the best long term recipe for future success of a QB that suffered a concussion less than a week prior.

Because of all of that, I fully expect Matthew Caldwell to be the starting quarterback for the Horns on Saturday.

**

While capable, Caldwell is a decidedly different type of QB than Manning.

Caldwell relies much more on shorter passing routes. He likes to throw on time and get the ball out quick, sort of like Quinn Ewers. And while he can zip it in there (his pass in the Florida game is an example), he seems to prefer to layer a pass and take the sure gains.

In all, he’s a highly capable backup. He will do some things really well, but will have his limitations, too.

**

While many will be focusing on the performance of Caldwell on Saturday, the real onus is on the Texas team on both sides of the ball.

It’s going to take everything they’ve got to beat a top ten Vanderbilt squad. They must play fast, smart and physical.

On defense, that means trying to keep Diego Pavia in the pocket, not getting lured to sleep with all of the eye candy and misdirection Vandy attempts, and holding the two Vandy TEs in relative check.

On offense, Texas needs to find something that works. Whether it’s the short passing game or the run game, it doesn’t really matter. This can not be a game where the offense puts the defense in multiple poor situations or repeatedly hands the ball over to Vandy after too many quick three-and-outs. Goal one: find a way to move the ball with consistency.

I think all of it possible. There’s a clear path to victory. But there’s a reason Vandy is 7-1 and ranked in the top ten.

It will come down to execution and heart. And getting off to a good start.
