Since we are on a bye this week i am in search of a historic Texas game to watch. Recently I watched the documentaries on the 1960s teams and I have watched just about every game since 2005 so anything from 1970-2005 that was memorable/historic would be greatly appreciated.

"Memorable"? Well, there's the 1991 Cotton Bowl Classic

1998 vs Texas A&M with Williams having...

  • 44 carries
  • 259 rushing yards
  • average of 5.9 yards per carry
  • one 60-yard rush worth watching again and again

1995 Texas Virginia had some moments.

Freshman Ricky Williams (139 yds on 14 carries)

700th overall UT victory

First time a winning play decided the game at home.

And the McKelvey / Weaver season.

Everybody remembers Dawson's kick but watch the last drive. Two 4th down conversions (Wane McGarity and Brown to Adams) to just get there.

1990 Cougar High @ Texas

My favorite game while a student on The 40.

It was the only game in history where UT fans stormed the field and tore down the goalposts, right?

"Derrick Lewis in a footrace."

The back to back '89 and '90 OU games were pretty good.  1996 aigy game with Westbrooks laying people out was a great game.

Westbrook almost beheaded a ND back that year too (kinder?).

Texas Mizzou 1996 had Ricky running wild and carrying at least one guy into the end zone. But it's the insane hurricane like storm that hits at about 1:38:00 that made it epic. That poor bastard punting for Mizzou hit about a 15-yarder straight into the teeth of the wind and rain before the refs decided to call time for a while.

Domers in Austin September 1996. Was a loss but this hit is legendary...Westbrook on Kinder. All 83,000 in attendance felt and heard the impact, Kinder was never the same the remainder of the game.Enjoy!! Beat the hell out ofGeorgia!!

1999 Cotton Bowl vs Miss St is also a fun watch if you never got to watch Ricky run. He was a runaway freight train in that game. This still from the game is an example, but the three consecutive runs tagged to the video show why the guy was so unstoppable. Injures one guy trying to tackle him, busts several tackles for a 23 yard gain, and then absolutely obliterates a defensive player trying to stop him at the goal line.

Man, you gotta love Westbrook.  He was pretty skinny... not a ton of muscle on his arms and legs.  I bet he was less than 180.  And he would PUNISH guys 30-40 pounds heavier than him... like Kinder and Greg McElroy.

Fantastic cover corner too.

You just never see that combo.   You have cover corners and then you have 200+ pound safeties who can hit.  Not both.

First, a three part series comes to mind:  First, to get the flavor if you will of Texas-OU in the 1970s, and to see just how talented all of the defensive players seemed to be, watch the 1976 Texas-OU game.  If you like defense and special teams, wow, unbelievable!!  Just writing about this game stresses me!!

Then follow that by watching the 1977 Texas-OU game. Again a feast for the defensive player in your soul, but also Earl!!!  Earl had to be heisman worthy just to score one touchdown against the incredibly talented OU defense.

I think this was the game that was televised only in Oklahoma City and Austin.  ABC was not allowed to pick up the game, because OU was on probation.  I believe it was a TV crew split-half Texas, half OU.  I think Steve Ross was a commentator for the Texas side.

Finally a kicking exhibition broke out the next week in Arkansas.  After probably the hardest hitting game of the year, we had to travel to Arkansas and play against Steve Little and the razorbacks.  great catch and run by Earl.  To my memory he only caught two passes that year, one against Ark. and one against Aggy, both screen passes, both very successful.

Switching to the offensive side of the ball; pick any game that we won in the mid 1980s that featured Eric Metcalf starting.  Truly amazing.  I only saw him in person one time, in a loss against Aggy, but he was absolutely out-of-this world elusive.

Finally, since you said before 2005, correct?  Go back and watch the 2004 Texas-OSU game.  We knew what would happen in '05, because of what happened in 2004.

Oops, one honorable mention type game that is probably not even on YouTube.  We all know that we had to play three QBs against OU in 1977.

However, few people remember that McEachern would also become bothered by a minor injury and true freshman Sam Ansley would start against either SMU or TCU.  But, Ansley had to go out for one play during the game, equipment problem I think.  So someone yells at Ricky Churchman DB, and he takes the snap, hands off to Earl, and Earl scores a 30 something yard TD! (I am 100% Ricky was a DB, but I am not 100% sure he was the DB who took the snap.)

I could be wrong, but I believe that cements 1977 as the year that the most QBs played in a game.  four QBs, and one DB took snaps.

I think the case could be made that 5 players taking a snap in an undefeated regular season is probably the highest number in NCAA history.

I didn't live in Texas or follow the Longhorns back then.  But a few years ago with nothing else on during a lazy Saturday I had a great time watching that game on Longhorn Network.  I knew how it was going to end, but those last couple of minutes was still exciting to watch.

Since OP asked for games only through the 2005 season, I'd nominate the 2005 game at Columbus.  A hell of a thrilling game for four quarters, and one that really got a lot of us believing we were going to the title game.

2003 vs Arkansas.  Cokehead Matt Jones won.

2003 @ Kansas State. When the Wizurd was still coaching.

2003 vs Tech.  Shootout featuring Wes Welker.

Rose Bowl vs Michigan. One of the greatest of all time.

Also a memorable game because Lee Corso was the color commentator in his first season at ESPN.

We have had been on the wrong side of big games at home and when Houston was rolling that year and we were also good at the same time, it was finally an opportunity for us to go Supernova. You feel it watching the game back.

Uga last year should had been that but we got off to such a bad start.

Since this is a Bye Week, I'm putting this here. We have a custom clothes maker in East Austin who creates suits for a large number of current and former Longhorns and other athletes.

The place is sotoandco.com

The clothes are nice. While I was there, M.J. McFarland came in. I think he sells real estate in Austin now. Great space in a container building and check out some of the clientele:
