Maybe this is why the regarded committee should value teams during the regular season that, you know, actually proved they can beat a "playoff team."

And get rid of automatic handout spots.

Why? This year it would have resulted in Georgia, Indiana, Tech. Instead we get a bunch of teams that have already proven they don’t deserve to compete for a title. As long as humans are making the picks instead of it being decided by playing there will be problems

And no Ohio St., and Duke. Your idea is terrible and OP posts nursing pay stubs to the internet.

Who cares about no Ohio state? They could have won their conference. The argument against conference champions is that a bunch of teams deserve a second chance. No thanks. Win your games

It was hilarious for sure. I’m not sure the funny part was a lack of understanding on why you just had to post it.

Yeah fuck the 12 team PO format.

Make it 16.

this year's slate would be improved with Texas Notre Dame, BYU and just pick another fourth team.

That "another fourth team" should be another ACC powerhouse. Fucking schooling the mighty SEC

ACC! ACC! ACC!

It’s also screwed up that Ole Miss and Oregon get to play teams they’re both favored by double digits against for their first round matchups.

-17 and -21. Ole Miss should be playing a UVA team and a -7 point favorite at home, with Tulane at Oregon and a -15+ dog. Weird ACC year. But the G5 experiment should end if they aren’t in the Top 12. Only a team like Boise would be likely to do that. Absent that, ND and Texas should be the back-fillers moving forward.

I think this is a fun one to show. If your goal is determining who is a champion from historical priors, 4 teams in contention is a solid cutoff.  6 is reasonable and is more commercial.  Beyond that it's a statistical improbability and not worth consideration.

Notes:

-numbers are from AI

-NCAAB doubles the conference count of other sporting leagues so seed count is repeated

-NFL is probably best comparison because its a single-game format and is literally the same sport

Fuck the G5. They are the reason people are bitching. If not for G5 Texas is possibly in and this dumb fucking thread doesn't exist.

* G6

The newfangled "Pac-12" doesn't belong with P4 teams, either.

So?  The regular season should matter.

I liked the BCS.

So you think mediots and members of a coaching staff is a better way to determine who is a champion over actually ya know, qualified teams getting to play for it.

Hate G5, hate the committee and its process, but hating the fact that P4 left a system that never worked and should have ended 50 years ago is really stupid. It's nearly as stupid as the way champions were determined.

You'll get no argument from me. The ACC is on the edge too.

The G6 absolutely belongs up and until the moment the power conferences stop being bitches and split off into their own competition.

If you're going to claim to be running a playoff for a league, then every league member should have a path to winning the championship at the beginning of every season.

If you’re going to nix G5 then you need to remove them from FBS altogether and give them their own championship.  You can’t put them in the FBS and also delete any chance of ever winning it.

The remaining conferences should be capped at 8 or 9 teams.  You want to bring someone new in, you must kick someone out. That relegated team has to find a new conference.  Every team in every conference plays every other team in conference.m. Similar strength of schedule throughout each conference. However many conferences we have is how many playoff teams we have. Conference winners make the playoffs. Nobody else does.

This. If your argument is “eye test” then you have a flawed system.

And it was mentioned up thread but the problem is the current conference alignments allow for wildly disparate schedules.

This isn’t that hard but when you have 130+ institutions all looking out for themselves only, you get this mess.

should be top 16 flat.  no auto qualification.  if g5 team is top 16 they are in.  if five are top 16 they are all in.

that way the current versions of best 2000s bosie state, utahs, and tcus would still make it, which we all want

Agree that 12-16 teams is overdoing it. I love football more than anything, but who cares about Ore/JMU? Tulane/Ole Miss? A rematch for ou/Bama? Aggy/Miami was beyond boring and terrible. No one cares to see either of them, but at least they lost at home after Zuhn still can't shut the fuck up.

No one, no matter how much of a die hard fan you are. Boring ass games in the first rd. Yay.

If they just took the top 16 teams, it would be fine.  If your conference isn’t strong enough to get you into the top 16 if you’re undefeated, sorry, get in a real conference.  A&M and Miami happened to be a bad ugly game but at least it was worth watching.  Forcing Tulane and JMU in is bad for the sport.  Also, stupid voting could be tested.  I’d like to see if #4 TTU and #13 Texas are accurate in terms of which are the best teams in the country.

They are until they aren't.

The current system is fair and fine. You cannot schedule good games. They happen organically.

The 15 vs 2 and 16 vs 1 in the Basketball playoff are very often routs. The 4 seed in the baseball playoff often get destroyed. But sometimes those games are awesome. I don't understand the panic and rage. Is it somehow unusual that the better games happen later in a tournament?

Well Tulane is ranked 11th so they would still have been in so people would still be furious and panicking. And JMU is 12th so your solution to this problem wouldn't solve it at all.

Whatever. We can do 16. But it won't guarantee every match up will be awesome any more than this one will.

You left out the 4th team intentionally.  So who is it?  And you think the at 4th team has any business in a 4 team playoff?

bama beat UGA during the regular season, but do you think they are the better team?  Just asking for reference.

I think OP has learned the wrong lesson from this weekend.

What we've learned this weekend is that STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WINS AND LOSSES.

My personal issue (if you even want to call it an issue) is CFB is just so much different than CBB and baseball. The upsets aren't as commonplace, so when. I see Ore/JMU I think just another stacked team against a team that probably only has around 10 three-star kids, and the rest two-star to unranked. That won't stop me from watching because of my love for the game, it's just the first rd games that are meh, but once we get to the quarters it begins getting good, so that's a trade-off I'm willing to take.

I can stomach 12 if you eliminate the auto bids and truly select the best teams.  8 would be better.  Do NOT expand (Narrator: they will)

I think they are forced to expand with the bowl games dying.

Bowl games just aren’t what they use to be. Player opt outs started it and now schools are just declining to go.

Yeah, but we didn't.

We did, however, actually play Florida. We maybe should have beaten them.

that would probably require complete realignment (scrapping the current conference system altogether) and the dropping of a bunch of also-rans that have been shielded from the negative effects of realignment by being in surviving conferences. don't see it happening. especially with BMDs at nearly any school able to money whip. you'd need a promotion/relegation system based on financial commitments. and good luck with that.

otherwise there's just not that many games compared to the number of teams and no one really wants to watch the 4th place ACC or Big 12 team.

I think they would have earned a spot through their play. ACC sucks, that’s likely to happen some years.

Bama didn’t win their conference. What are the conference even for if not season long eliminators. They aren’t even geographically aligned anymore

You’re using the tournament seed numbers not ranking.  Tulane is ranked #20 and JMU is #24.  They’re seeded higher because of autobids.

ND, BYU, Texas, Vandy, Utah and USC would be in and those two wouldn’t.
