Georgia and Kirby Smart reportedly promoting former FBS defensive coordinator to on-field role

Doug Samuels     Feb 14, 2025

In a trend we're seeing across college football with the 10 on-field assistants now a thing of the past, a lot of programs are designating coaches for the nickel position.

That's what Kirby Smart and Georgia are doing with former Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Andrew Thacker, per CBS Sports.

Thacker landed on his feet in Athens last year as an analyst, and CBS Sports shares that he was a target for another top program this cycle, but Smarty and the Dawgs are holding onto him with the promotion.

A former defensive coordinator with stops calling the plays at Georgia Tech under both Geoff Collins and Brent Key, Thacker also served as the defensive coordinator for a season at Temple with Collins.

He brings experience working with both safeties and linebackers at the FBS level, previously working in the secondary at UCF and Southern Miss before moving to linebackers at Kennesaw State and Temple.

This fall will mark Thacker's second season with Georgia, and his first in an official on-field role.

Stay tuned

There is video floating around of the head of SEC officials explaining (with video examples) what would and wouldn't be a penalty.

I think it may be tough for officials to discern, hopefully they are willing to pick some of these up if the line judges get trigger happy - overall I think it's an "ok" addition if it able to be enforced how they explained it.

Here is the video of the official explaining the penalty:

To me, it sounds like the new rule has nothing to do with the shift - which is still perfectly legal. If the OL jumps because of the shift, then it's a false start penalty.

What is actually illegal now is when the DL moves to simulate the snap. If the DL twitches or jumps and it draws the OL to false start, the defense will get a delay of game penalty.

I still don't like the new rule because I think it will be abuse and I have no faith in officials correctly enforcing it. But the tweet is not accurately describing the new rule, which has nothing to do with a shift except as an example of what is still being allowed.

Basically, stop doing cheap bullshit.

Georgia does it for sure.

When are they going to make the LSU-rule against faking injuries to stop the offense? Or did they already fix that and I missed it?

Ole Miss is a major player in that arena also..

I think they are attempting to address it with the rule about injuries once a ball is spotted for play that "injuries" after that are a charged timeout against the defense.  It will be curious to see how they enforce that and how many "injuries" start to occur just before the ball is spotted.

They addressed it somewhat with a new rule this year.  If a player goes down after the ball was set by the ref, that team is charged a timeout.  If they are out of timeouts, it is a 5 yrd delay of game penalty on the defense.

They also added that when the defense substitutes to match the offense, it has to be done at an "athletic pace".   No barely shuffling on and off the field to run out the play clock.  Of course, "athletic pace" is going to be up for much interpretation.

And they added that if a returner makes the T signal on a kick return, that is now equivalent to a fair catch.

Then Kirby's update...

Tuesday Update: Kirby Smart says Will Muschamp is still assisting with Georgia in an off-field capacity while tossing his SID under the bus. “Will is still with us. He’s still going to help us," he told Georgia Bulldogs on SI. "I guess Leland left him off the media guide, yall gonna have to take that up with him."

Previously, they had to jump into the neutral zone.

Georgia would time up multiple people and have them all do something at the same time- DL suddenly shift along the line while a linebacker runs up.

So will Kirby still be allowed to just walk all over the field of play?

He’s going to continue to be a cry baby bitch

which is fine

Hopefully Florida and Texas piss in his Cheerios this year and we get tons of crying
