2023 Republican Government Shutdown: Same Shit, Same Story

i think I heard the spending bill is through September.

Quote

The spending legislation includes the seven remaining bills to keep the remainder of the government open through the end of September. House and Senate negotiators unveiled the 1,159-page bill on Wednesday just before midnight, leaving little time for lawmakers to actually digest its contents.

This is my thought as well.  I guess I kinda get the argument that this move sets precedent for all kinds of hypothetical good stuff at some hypothetical point in the future, but I’m just having a hard time giving much of a fuck about or taking any comfort in any of that.  I want the bullshit that is going on now stopped dead in it’s tracks now, much more.

Giving the executive the ability to do anything they want just by declaring an emergency is a hypothetical good thing?

Amazing how a president can PLAN a national emergency.

You were saying an hour ago he wouldn't do it.

Meanwhile, here's the extra money needed for a wall:

Quote

The Federal Trade Commission and Facebook are negotiating over a multi-billion dollar fine that would settle the agency’s investigation into the social media giant’s privacy practices, according to two people familiar with the probe.

Quote

The fine would be the largest the agency has ever imposed on a technology company, but the two sides have not yet agreed on an exact amount. Facebook has expressed initial concern with the FTC’s demands, one of the people said. If talks break down, the FTC could take the matter to court in what would likely be a bruising legal fight.

Quote

A multi-billion dollar fine would amount to a reckoning for Facebook in the United States after a series of privacy lapses that may have put the personal information of its users at risk. Lawmakers have faulted the company for mishandling that data while failing to crack down on other other digital ills, including the rise of online hate speech and the spread of disinformation from Russian operatives and other foreign actors.

Has he done it yet?

I could be wrong but imagine all the praise he will get in the media for not declaring a national emergency at the last minute.

Oh thank you Trump for coming to your senses and not going down this reckless path.  We are so lucky.

No, he hasn't done it.   But then again, Sarah Sanders doesn't really go off on her own tangent and declare shit, either.

Absolutely embarrassing. It’s like they’re openly admitting that they’re staging a hoax

I thought for a while that cognitive dissonance would finally manage to work out a resolution. I underestimated the resilience of belief in direct opposition to facts.

They believe because they believe it. He's got no faith in anything. He has no church in him whatsoever. But, he's offered to the true believers like Pence a way to go towards their amorphous goals. The 30somethinpercent will not leave him until they die. No matter how the emergency declaration shakes out they won't abandon him. He's all they have. Gohmert can't do shit. Oh sure he can get on Fox and spout nonsense, but he has no power.

It's late and I'm rambling.

Trump & Co know this will never happen.  It'll take 2-3 years in court and by that's well past the next election.  He just wants to be able to talk about it leading up to the election.

What's funny is he made immigration a key issue in the mid terms and we saw how that worked.  He's doubling down on that.

He doesn’t have much else to go with. Sure some of the economic numbers are great but his base isn’t feeling the benefits as much as others.  He will need to scare people more and more about the southern invaders and socialists. It’s his only game.

Holy shit, don't let Trump hear that idea.

As if he didn't already have it.  All he cares about is having his name and face on shit. He probably has had a full time "Trump on the new $500 bill" team since his election. How many commemorative coins has that asshole released?

Oh, he wouldn't want his face on a mere dollar.  That's for suckass olds like Washington.

Nope, he would want it on the largest denomination the mint has ever printed.

I'd like to think that when the President, any President, has a news conference to announce a national emergency, they go back inside the White House afterwards and gets to work on solving the crisis.

This President is going to announce an emergency, then go golfing in Florida immediately afterward:

Yeah, I think the term "dollar bill" can apply to any denomination.  The point was let's not do anything to give him any ideas. And no, I don't really think he's reading this board.

With the government shutdown, hasn't it been a couple months since he could use our tax dollars to pay himself to feed and house his staff and secret service detail at his resort? Gotta get that gravy train rolling again. Maybe at the same time make sure all the undocumented immigrants employed at the resort have been fired.

Actually, he went there after the shutdown ended.

Imagine being so stupid you think the WALL is something that is a national emergency.  Incredible

Imagine being so stupid you think the WALL in February 2019 is something that is a national emergency but it wasn't from January 2017 to December 2018 when you had the entire Congress and Presidency.

These people should be sterilized.

Never mind that it would take 20+ years to build the Wall.
