Normally I'd agree. But this game will definitely matter. It will be a packed house, great atmosphere, and if Texas wins, the national perception goes way up.

Yup. Texas needs a statement win and national relevance far more than SC needs to show playing time.

It's going to be the tits when we win that one.  The atmosphere AND the win are going to influence the ton of recruits in town.

Let's just beat fucking Maryland first. We get to SC healthy, and I like our chances too.

Here's an OL out of California that Herb Hand has been talking to:

In the few clips I've seen he has really good balance and does not get over extended or out over his skis. Keeps defenders hands off his body. Check out the competition stuff at the end of this link ::

The Stampede: Texas recruiting scoop from Prime 21

— There has been some buzz about elite defensive back Lewis Cine and Georgia as of late. And yes, Georgia is definitely a legitimate player. Cine is very much looking forward to his fall OV there and has a strong relationship with the staff. With that said, Texas remains in a good position here. The Longhorns have the advantage of being three hours away from his new home in Dallas and should host him for multiple games this season, including a big one against USC on Sept. 15. Texas safeties coach Craig Naivar has done a tremendous job of building personal relationships with Cine as well as his mentor, NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. Penn State is the other school that I feel is right up there with Georgia and Texas. He is originally from the northeast, and Penn State was his favorite throughout most of the cycle. For Cine, it’s going to come down to relationships, but it obviously wouldn’t hurt for Texas to have some success on the field early on. Michigan and Florida also remain in the mix ahead of his October decision timeframe.

— Texas had had plenty of success in California this recruiting cycle, landing national Top 200 recruits Chris Adimora and De’Gabriel Floyd. The Longhorns are also very much in the mix for five-star athlete Bru McCoy. UT’s strong presence out West has certainly caught the attention of five-star Mater Dei (Calif.) Elias Ricks. In fact, McCoy has told him a lot about the program, and Floyd has been actively recruiting him already. While he is pegged as a USC lean early on, Ricks has family in the Dallas-area and is very intrigued with the idea of playing college football in the Lone Star State. Ricks actually wanted to visit Texas this weekend, but the dead period prevented it. He is hoping to make a visit when the Longhorns take on USC on September 15.

— Five-star Trinity Christian Cedar Hill defensive back Dwight McGlothern made some noise on social media this weekend when he jokingly said he was committed to Texas A&M. McGlothern laughed it off at the camp and said he was going to continue to take his time with the process. With that said, there is some A&M influence in McGlothern’s camp, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him land there. However, the move to Trinity Christian Cedar Hill should work in UT’s favor. Again, Naivar has a personal relationship with Sanders, who will be McGlothern’s new mentor, and those influences will be back in the Houston-area. Texas has some work to do here, but the Longhorns are one of four big players along with A&M, Alabama and LSU. McGlothern, who is being recruited more as a safety, has a nice bond with Naivar and should be on campus soon.

— Texas remains in a great spot early on for five-star 2020 Galena Park North Shore Zachary Evans. In fact, I feel like the Longhorns are in the pole position early on. While there is still a long way to go in his recruitment — Evans doesn’t plan to decide until next signing day — Texas has gotten him on campus multiple times this offseason and has made him arguably its top priority for next cycle. Evans loves Stan Drayton and his resume of developing running backs and sees an opportunity to make an early impact in UT’s backfield. On top of that, Texas has done a tremendous job of winning over Evans’ brother, who is very influential in this recruitment. Texas just needs to win on the field this season, and it should continue to be the perceived frontrunner for this truly special prospect. By the way, former Houston Lamar recruiting coordinator Theadis Reagins, who visited Texas with Anthony Cook, D’shawn Jamison and Al’Vonte Woodard and played a role in their recruitments, is now an assistant coach at Galena Park North Shore.

— While Evans is a major priority for Texas, the Longhorns are still actively recruiting elite Aledo running back Jase McClellan. Right now, he has no plans to be back on UT’s campus, and his commitment to Oklahoma remains extremely solid. But Texas is a school that McClellan really grew up liking, and his mother is very high on the program. McClellan is also the cousin of former Texas running back Jonathan Gray. There isn’t much movement here at this time, but don’t be surprising if the Longhorns get him to a game in the fall.

— Four-star Cibolo Steele cornerback Jaylon Jones is very high on Texas early on. UT cornerbacks coach Jason Washington has done a wonderful job with this recruitment so far, and has put in some work with his parents. In fact, Washington only lives 15 minutes away from the Jones family and has developed a personal relationship with them. Texas is pegged as the early favorite for Jones, and his father, specifically, is very partial to the program. But Jones is in no rush to make a decision, and schools like Ohio State, Texas A&M and Florida remain in the mix. Florida was actually Jones’ dream school growing up since he was born in Jacksonville, so the Gators are ones to watch here.

— Elite Duncanville safety Chris Thompson is taking the process extremely slow. Thompson does not plan to make an early decision and does not have any visits set up for after the dead period. With that said, we feel like Texas and Texas A&M are the two schools making the biggest impressions so far. Naivar has built a really strong bond with Thompson early on and has gotten him on campus on multiple occasions this offseason. Texas also has an X-factor on staff in Ra’Shaad Samples, who is like a big brother to Thompson. Samples’ father also happens to be Duncanville head coach Reginald Samples.

— Four-star 2020 wide receiver Troy Omeire has Texas A&M at the top of his list early on, but Texas is making a surge and is currently in the No. 2 spot. I talked to both Omeire and his mother, and they are both looking forward to getting an in-depth look at the program after the period. Right now, I just feel like they are more familiar with A&M. Once they get on the Texas campus and meet with the staff, this recruitment could certainly see a shakeup. It is imperative for the Longhorns to hit a homerun when he does make it to campus.

— Texas recently extended an offer to four-star 2020 Madison Prep (La.) athlete Joel Williams. He enjoyed his visit to campus and was really impressed with the facilities on the Forty Acres. However, it’s going to be extremely tough to pull him out of Louisiana. Williams has an LSU offer in hand, and we are hearing the Tigers are in a prime position to land him.

— I spoke to several parents of top underclassmen recruits this weekend, and they all had very positive things to say about Tom Herman and the Texas staff. It seems like Texas has really sped up its recruiting timeline as it has put more of an emphasis on underclassmen as opposed to last year. It seems like a broken record, but the word that was most often used when describing the staff was ‘family.’ Texas is doing a really nice job with the 2020 class already and with a strong performance on the field, I feel like their haul could be special.

— Texas is evaluating several prospects that participated at the camp. I am told the Longhorns are very intrigued by four-star cornerback Lorando Johnson and rising cornerback Avery Helm. Johnson will be at Texas on July 27, while Helm caught the staff’s attention at one of the on-campus camps earlier this summer. Texas has also been in close contact with four-star wide receiver Marvin Mims, and we wouldn’t be surprised if an offer comes sooner rather than later.

I'm puzzled that TFB thinks that Marcel Brooks is actually being recruited.

It has been posited that reports of our recruitment of him are coming entirely from his camp. Odd in that TFB seems to be the most plugged in of the pay sites. Maybe TFB is just better connected with the actual recruits this cycle rather than having any good contacts on our side.

I don't think any of 9.95ers know what is truly going on with the recruiting and position boards. This staff is very good at communicating without anyone knowing they are communicating.

It definitely seems like the pay sites are getting their info from the recruit side only. TFB has been on target a lot this cycle, but they have been doing commitment videos, so they don't really need to have a solid staff source for the guys who are getting the green light. But if Brooks is telling them he is hearing a lot from Texas, there might not be anyone on the inside to counter that assertion.

Why would they counter the assertion? I don't see a reason why the staff would care.

I honestly doubt they care, but if any of these 9.95ers had legit access, it would likely be a point easily confirmed or disputed. The only downside would be if they are telling other guys what the pecking order is (blowing smoke or otherwise). It might not look good if there is another highly ranked guy claiming he is being treated like he is on the short list. We have seen guys scared off from bullshit pay site reporting in the past. (Fuck you, Chip Brown!)

A real target wouldn't be confused because they would know exactly where they stand directly from the staff.

Not saying our staff would, but this just in staffs lie to high school kids to get them to commit.  See the Aggie safety that is going to be a CB per coaches.

Except aggy isn't necessarily lying.  When they trot 5 safeties out for pass coverage, 2 of the said safeties are going to have to try and play cb

EJ after dark: Intel on Shepherd, upcoming visitors

— Texas is working hard to get four-star Houston North Forest offensive lineman Javonne Shepherd back down to campus right after the dead period, so don't be surprised if he makes it in on July 27. If he does make it to Austin, it would be another big battle win in the overall war against Texas A&M. Right now, we still feel very good about our Texas Crystal Ball picks, and Shepherd hasn’t backed off of his statement that the Longhorns have the edge in his recruitment.

— As we reported over the weekend, four-star Williams Field (AZ) defensive back Noa Pola-Gates is set to visit on July 27. This is huge considering it will be an unofficial visit, and Pola-Gates should return for an official visit in the fall. Alabama is still considered the favorite here, but as we’ve been reporting over the last week, Texas is making a big push here. UT safeties coach Craig Naivar has done a tremendous job in this recruitment, and recruiting staffer Jake Langi, who has strong Polynesian ties, is also involved. The longer this goes, the better for Texas.

— Four-star Notre Dame Prep (AZ) wide receiver and Texas commit Jake Smith is also looking to make an unofficial visit to Texas on July 27. Smith is completely solid to the Longhorns and could really help in the recruitment of Pola-Gates. Texas is obviously recruiting the state of Arizona hard this cycle and will certainly make the pitch to Pola-Gates of playing with Smith and Brayden Liebrock at the next level. Expect Smith to spend a lot of time with Pola-Gates.

— Four-star Katy Cinco Ranch inside linebacker David Gbenda is planning to make his way to Austin on July 27 as we reported earlier today. We’ve maintained that Texas is pushing for Gbenda, and that hasn’t changed. There is a reason this will be Gbenda’s second visit to Texas of the summer. Right now, we feel like Texas is in the pole position in this recruitment and has regained momentum from Texas A&M. By the way, Texas commit Peter Mpagi is good friends with Gbenda, and the two SnapChat everyday. Mpagi will also visit Texas on July 27, and Gbenda will be one of his biggest targets.

Joe Cook: Herman expands on Jamison’s position change, player’s position preference in recruiting

http://insidetexas.com/herman-expands-on-jamisons-position-change-players-position-preference-in-recruiting/

Every college coach in any sport, Texas head coach Tom Herman included, knows that recruiting is the lifeblood of the program. In order to recruit well, coaches need to often tell players what they want to hear.

Earlier in his recruitment in a since-deleted tweet, Texas freshman D’Shawn Jamison stated he wanted to be used in college like former Michigan Wolverine and current Cleveland Brown Jabrill Peppers. In the early stages of his Texas career, Jamison might get that wish.

In the official 2018 media guide and on the roster on the official athletics website, the class of 2018 member from Houston Lamar is listed as a wide receiver, confirming Inside Texas’ previous reporting. His Twitter profile reads that he is both a wide receiver and a defensive back at Texas, a role similar to that of Peppers.

In his final two seasons in Ann Arbor, Peppers amassed 111 total tackles, 18.5 of them for loss, three sacks and an interception. In addition, he rushed for five touchdowns and averaged 13.1 yards per punt return and 26.8 yards per kick return.

Though Jamison might not work between the tackles, Herman assured him the opportunity to both try and score and prevent scoring.

“He’s going to play both this year,” Herman said Tuesday at Big 12 Media Days. “He’s been working at both throughout the offseason. He’s been doing drills with both the slot receivers and the DBs. We certainly plan to use him on offense, but I think it’s more of a stop-gap.”

Jamison’s high school highlights are full of kick and punt returns for touchdowns, so putting the ball in his hands makes sense. It also makes sense for the Longhorns, as there is a need at the slot receiver position following the departure of Reggie Hemphill-Mapps. Though junior Lil’Jordan Humphrey is set to have a big year, those behind him on the depth chart are unproven.

“We approached D’Shawn and said ‘hey, we’ve got a need for some dynamism at that slot receiver position, and you certainly have it. The DB room is pretty packed this year, not to say that you can’t crack into it, but we’d like for you to at least get some work at slot receiver and see how it goes,’” Herman said. “By all accounts, he’s having a pretty good offseason.”

Being able to bring this account to star prospects on the recruiting trail is a nice feather for Herman to have in his cap. Currently, two of Texas’ top 2019 targets, Bru McCoy of Mater Dei (Calif.) and Makiya Tongue of University Lab (La.), have aspirations of playing a different position than what the Longhorn coaches would prefer them to play at.

According to Herman, he leaves that choice up to the players.

“You come into our program, and you can play whatever you want to play,” Herman said. “You look at the depth chart and say ‘I want to play this,’ and usually it always works itself out.”

Herman noted just because a player is in his preferred position does not mean he is guaranteed playing time. In his example, he said that a player who comes in as a linebacker but who his staff prefers at defensive end will get every opportunity to play linebacker.

“Usually by the second or third week, knock, knock, knock on coach’s door,” Herman said. “‘Hey coach, I’m the fourth string linebacker, I think I could be the second string defensive end. Do you think I could move to defense?’”

Those decisions normally work themselves out, but Herman knows it has to take place organically. As soon as it’s forced, it becomes an issue.

“It’s always the young man’s decision,” Herman said. “If it’s not, you’re not getting a full buy-in.”

Judging by Jamison’s Twitter bio and Inside Texas’ previous reporting, the buy-in, in this case, is there.
