United charges $70 a bag now and Southwest is still free.

At the end of the day, I find the 2 to be similarly priced. United has cheaper fares but has additional charges. SWA has more expensive flights. I'm speaking about flights outside Texas.

We need the indiana jones method to solve passenger problems:

When you get finished watching Reefer Madness, look up edibles.

For some reason I doubt those who smell strongly of reefer do so because they’ve been mainlining their special brownies.

I know the potheads are offended, but I think it’s unlikely that everyone switched from edibles to smoking when MJ was legalized in several places.

Potheads love it.  Brah you sound like an 80 year old man. You must think reefer madness was a documentary.

What do you call people who have a daily glass of wine or 2 or a couple beers or martinis ?

Offended ?  No, amused  you keep trying  to make some veiled connection of weed to unrully passengers.  It ain't pot smokers it's  alcoholics, and people on other controlled substances.

so is this whole storming the cockpit a "new" thing made famous by 9/11 or were people always this batshit crazy? were men in suits trying to storm the cockpit in the 70s and 80s?

if not, then why have we become such fucking idiots? serving alcohol is not a recent thing, is it? was it only served in first class then and now that alcohol is given to the peasants, the peasants are acting all peasant like?

You’re a smart guy, but your love of the leaf is clouding your reading comprehension.

I, and several of my coworkers noticed an uptick in passenger issues when MJ started being legalized. I have noticed that most every passenger we have removed from the plane or who is a problem reeks of it, and that it stinks like it at every curb. I also said that the majority of those removals aren’t the violent kind, and that the violent kind is a very small percentage of overall passenger disturbances. The problem is that you think I’m directly equating marijuana use with violence. No, I’m noting it’s heightened use and presence before flying over everyone thinking people are showing up drunk. That’s hardly the case though it’s common in Vegas to get some of that.

The point that you and others keep ignoring is that, as I said in the original post, people are showing up blazed, using or abusing their prescriptions and as well as other drugs legal or not. It’s usually pretty obvious when someone is just inebriated. There’s a smell to that as well.

I think a more permissive societal attitude towards drug use combined with the stresses of the last 24 months or however long it’s been is making some bad combinations inside of metal tubes. I also think that the extreme low fares being used to entice people to fly again is bringing forth some members of society who are prone to violence, drug use and or are anti authoritarian.

We had a guy charge the flightdeck at the gate after refusing to wear his mask last summer. He proceeded to tell the FA he was going to beat her up, dog cussed her, let everyone know he’s been to prison and wasn’t afraid to go back and then tried to shove the lead FA out of the way and push past the other pilot into the flightdeck. We shoved him out, locked the door per procedures and called for law enforcement. We saw him run up the jet bridge and disappear into the terminal. Don’t know what happened to him. Shortly thereafter a woman claiming to be his fiancé trudging up the jet brigade dragging their bags and likely considering her recent life choices.

My position is anecdotal, but let’s be real. Crews see a lot more of it than pretty much all of you combined.

Also, your defense of the subject seems to centered on some thought that I care about it’s general use. I don’t. You do you. It doesn’t mean I want to smell it anymore than I want to smell cigarette smoke or a pissy bar bathroom.

This is not a for or against observation I’m making or any comment on legalization other than noticing the correlation between it an issues in the industry. But you and several others jumped on that train.

I and several of my coworkers notice that over 90% of our issues involve alcohol. Almost every guest we have ejected was because they were drunk. A few were marijuana related because we found out they were stupid enough to bring some, not because of behavior.

I’ve seen plenty who were stupid enough to bring it and advertise the fact, but I’m pretty sure that showing up visibly intoxicated or under the influence of drugs is still not permissible whether the passenger is chill or not.

I find the intoxicated ones are coming or going to places like Vegas or Mexico.

Fair enough, but My love of weed doesn't cloud my judgment about issues related to drug use.  I've got a couple friends who I'd call pot heads because they smoke too much, and it does affect their life in some stupid ass ways.  I'm just saying weed is more benign than things like vodka when it comes to somebody getting out of line, and becoming violent or unruly.  I also get that lots of people do not like the smell, my wife included, but she digs cigar smoke, so go figure.  I don't have to deal with any of it in my professional life so I don't see the broad swath of humanity you do.

I will say I'm a bit sensitive about the topic because weed has gotten such a bad rep when alcohol is about as detrimental to peoples lives as almost any drug out there.

Seemed like this shit was going even before the rona. Late 2019 I was on a flight from DCA to SEA and this mid-twenties girl dressed like a slob (no pics and that’s fine believe me) gets on dragging a giant unicorn pillow, laptop, carryon, purse, etc. Sits in my row, I’m in window and a guy maybe in his early thirties is in middle. A very clearly gay flight attendant tells her she needs to stow the pillow and shit because she is blocking the aisle and seat row. She rolls her eyes and puts on headphones. He comes back by, tell her again, she says “I want this with me.”  And starts texting someone.

Flight attendant comes back a third time, she’s still texting, she calls him a “f—-t” and still refuses to do anything. Fourth time he comes back with a giant cop who tells her to GTFO the plane. She points at me and the dude next to me to vouch for her that she “didn’t do anything,” but my name’s Bennett and I ain’t in it.  The cop escorted her off with her dumbass pillow and her shouting homophobic shit the whole way.

I would have ratted her out in a second just to get her off the row so center seat could go aisle and give you that european business class seat arrangement.

Not cloud judgment. Just what I was saying. A few went immediately defensive. I don’t care if you smoke it or much of anything else really. I don’t care if you prefer to drink or go on Joe Rogan acid trips. Don’t care. But  I think the overall connection between all kinds of drug use and passenger behavior is real, and the prevalence of that MJ smell is an indicator of it of where people are at on the issue if not the causation of the stuff that makes the news.

Is that like going to a restaurant with an off-duty restaurant person? "Nit nit nit nit-pick, nothing's ever as good as at OUR restaurant, I'm a waiter and I know."

Me: "But this here wine shore is good!"

Waiter: "She held the bottle wrong when she presented it to us."

Yeah, this is real. Domestic flying almost anywhere is a nonstop ass kicking.

The absolute worst flight I flew on was a British Air (then) intra-EU flight. BA has gone to an all inflight purchase model and I was flying with six year old and four year old.  Typical connection, I didn’t have time to stop for snacks and drinks after toilets, hustling through security, etc.  I asked for some water and they quoted me some bullshit like three pounds for a bottled water.  I told the FA I just wanted a couple cups of water for the kids, she rolled her eyes and said she’d bring them after the meal and drink pay service finished. She did, and then stood next to our aisle. After I said “thank you,” she said “I’ll be waiting here sir, to make sure only your children drink this. If you’d like water that will be three pounds.”

I have to wonder what doing a job like that does to someone over time.

Fucking Brits. If we hadn't helped them out against William the Conqueror, they'd all be speaking Norman French now.

I guess I'm missing your attempt at comedy here. My wife doesn't want to talk to me either during a flight. She wants to sit and read her book or magazine. She's not striking up conversations with random strangers. Get your own aisle seat if you don't want to worry about who you're in between.

Wat? At what point did SWA stop offering two checked bags, a coke/coffee/water and pretzels in their fare? Oh yeah, and no change fees or cancellation fees.

Clearly they forced all the other airlines into their fee bullshit.

deregulation allowed a captured race to the bottom.  southwest defined the bottom as a cattle pen.

70% of the adults in this country who fly don't know anything other than living hell in the air.

wall street wins.

How do you barely go home?

My guess is she's either on the return leg of her trip and is hesitant to get back on a plane, or she's been stuck in OKC waiting to get sent out on another flight, or she missed a connection in ATL and is just now getting to where she was going.

Or she's wasted and she can't find her way home.

This is correct, Scared to get back on a plane and missed some connection. Saw the news here and a last night she posted that she was barely about to go home.

Air National Guard transport plane across the Atlantic. Web seating and earplugs. Bathroom was a Portapotty somewhat loosely tied down, mainly held down by the weight of a couple hundred guys' piss. As we started banking to land, Company Commander says to me, he says, "Canecutter, that Portapotty's fixin to tip, pick up your shit and hold your legs up, pass it down." We all did. The other unit facing us, we tried to warn them, they just squinted back and shook their heads, left all their backpacks and gear on the floor.

Then we banked more, and the Portapotty tipped. Their way. River of piss splashing all over them and their stuff. Banked our way-- flowed underneath us, packs dry in our laps.

Thus started two very different experiences in Camp Darby, Italy.

Naw I flew it plenty as a kid. My ex-stepmom had been a stewardess for them and her dad was an exec and one of the founders IIRC. I don't recall it being any different than AA (first airline I flew solo, at 4, 'cause dad lied about my age) but didn't they beat SWA to the T&A stewardess punch? It was wasted on my pre-K ass if so.
