Time for another ‘my dog is awesome’ thread

Recommended Posts

Got a new mutt pup a couple months ago. Was told it was some sort of Australian Shepherd mix.

She definitely had boxer markings and hops, but clearly not boxer face now that her snout has grown. I don't know much about dogs. So no idea what kind of mix. Not seeing much Australian Shepherd

Really long legs.

Thoughts?

She has a big chest and long legs. Pretty small head.

Border collie of some type. Definitely could be collie/whippet.

So, my dog Vincey  (named of course after VY) was a 10 year old Golden retriever. We got her 6 months after we got married, while pregnant with our first and right after moving to Victoria and buying a new home. She was a birthday present for me but she wasn’t ever my dog- she was my wife’s. I’ve never seen a dog and woman so attuned to each other it was amazing.

Blah blah blah she did all the stuff that people love their dogs for and was a good dog, always healthy. 2 weeks ago she lost her appetite. Took her to the vet and they gave her some meds, but she was throwing up and still not eating so we took her in a couple days later and she had a very enlarged spleen per the X Ray and was now anemic, so maybe some liver damage too.

Bet calls me up and says he can do exploratory surgery- at least a couple thousand bucks. I’d asked the wife how much she was comfortable spending and she said a couple thousand- oh great- way to make it easy doc.

I then asked him- so 100 dogs go into this surgery presenting like this/ how many come out doing well and he starts hemming and hawing and saying this is very risky, there are no guarantees but it’s not great. I decide to put her down but tell him to do it the next day. This is very hard because she has always been healthy and there’s no build up.

Reading online her symptoms sounds like it’s 80/20 cancer and the cancer is really nasty- even if not cancer maybe she’s got a median life of another 13 months (probably less for her as 10’s sort of old for a golden) but I’m going back and forth wondering if this is the right decision.

I know we have a pandemic going on, cash is going to be important, we are already $1,000 in to treatment, I’ve got $10k in the bank and uncertain financial prospects ahead because of this virus- is spending 6 truck payments or 2/3 of a mortgage payment the right call at this time?  My rational brain says probably not but I’m agonized as to if I’m making the right decision.

Next morning comes and we load the family in to say goodbye and I’m dreading seeing her. I’m scared to death she will bolt upright, start wagging her tail excited to see us and I will have no choice but to say- let’s do the operation- here- take all my money and let’s hope for a miracle.

We walk in and the dog is lying down and no reaction to seeing us (she’s a golden/ she always gets excited to see her people). She looks absolutely pitiful and miserable. I ask the nurse if that’s what she’s like sedated or on the pain meds and she says no to both- she’s. It sedated and the pain meds would have worn off in the middle of the night- that’s just her naturally. I nod my head, continue to bawl and know that we are doing the right thing. All the indecision is out of my mind now and it won’t be something I beat myself up about for years and years.

So, my last story about how awesome my dog is is that she gave me the peace of mind and grace to look miserable and like it was her time to go.

I’m pretty sure that someday I will meet Vincey again and she will be barking at a possum or dominance bumping a cat or any of the other things she loved doing here on earth. She will be happy to see me but not as happy as when she is reunited with my wife.

Me now have a Great Pyrenees puppy (6 months old) and a golden doodle puppy (2 months old- we got her the day we out Vincey down) at our house but it hasn’t really set in that Vincey is gone yet. Her ashes and paw print are over our fireplace mantle. Not sure if that will be final resting place or not.

I miss that damn dog a lot right now.

Sounds like a mix meant for lazily lounging around all day.  No high-strung dog there!

I was just going to say, "That looks like a ball of boundless energy."

Looks a lot like Bella. The only thing is the extremely long legs.

We lost a good one today boys. Pour one out for Capt. Velcro. Just two weeks ago, he guarded the house against a vicious, red-eyed death possum. He tried to pick a fight with a playful pit and a GSD at the same fucking time. Deaf as my wife and about the best fucking dog I've ever owned. a9cd37e290e752e19f2e5f4dab4f4e7b.jpg98c4a2f77656b063908055937bfb03eb.jpgd36b0ddcca35c36bf5066d9732f26140.jpgc32efece57380003ce7f472c2cf62e02.jpg65f023dfffdcc31453ffc244c3e02fc4.jpg

Damn. Not the preferred way to go out.

Yep. 10 days ago, he went on a 2 mile walk.  Then he went drastically downhill.  With the vet closed, I was having to pump 100cc of ringers in to him every day.  His kidneys had shut down but the little fucker wouldn't die.  Took him in today.  Wife and the other dog are a fucking wreck.

Underrated worst part of having to put a dog down is the effect it has on your other pups. The constant roaming the house looking for their friend, the laying the the other dogs favorite spots, the looking out the window. All of it just kills me. As if losing a family member isn’t enough.

Took a walk on the trail near our house and enjoyed the nice weather today. Been taking lots of walks lately as I’m sure most everyone has.

Here’s Shelby and Nora.

Our boy, Donnie is getting up there in age, at least 10 years old. He's still just about as lively as he has ever been, which is to say not very, but I can see that it's starting to take him more effort to get up and go for walks. My wife got him before I was around and he's been there for her through many moves and multiple rounds of school, so it's going to be horrible when he passes. Hopefully he's got a few years remaining, but in the meantime we put a deposit down on one of these doberman girls to help keep him young. 426ef307b5a6961b5a1ee05d92381f82.jpg29d239851b6c6f0d5a81ea747233de3e.jpg

Both of these sweet girls have been adopted!  The one with socks was adopted yesterday.

It looks like we may be fostering a couple more lab/pyr mix pups in about 7 or 8 weeks.

So about a year ago, I posted about our Morkie/Jack Russell mix Emmy who had torn her ACL. She just turned 10 yesterday. Surgery was going to be like 1200 bucks. So the doctor said since she’s a small dog, they can often repair their own ACL over time. We gave her doggie Advil and for a couple of months she limped along.

We’ve lived in our current house for 5+ years. It has wood floors, so she’s never been able to jump onto our bed. She makes a big production out of tapping her claws as loud as possible, shaking her collar as loud as possible, and the like when she wants in bed with us.

Fast forward to yesterday. We can find Emmy. She’s gone. It’s 2 in the afternoon and we hadn’t seen her since we heard her eating around noon. We call out and get nothing. Doors were closed, so she couldn’t have gotten out. We are perplexed. I go in the bedroom and find her perched in between two pillows taking the nap of her life. I can only think that her regrown ACL is like that of Henry Rowengarner from Rookie of the League and is so tight she has ups like she’s never had before.

Anyway here she is looking mildly annoyed I awoke her from her glorious bed nap.4a1df7e17e565dada87cfe966200a72d.jpg
