  1. In a way, each of us has a Night King to face. For some, shyness might be their Night King. For others, a lack of an education might be their Night King. For us, Night King is a big, icey man who wants to kill the living. But as sure as my name is Jon Snow, the people of Winterfell can conquer their personal Night King, who happens to be the actual Night King.

  2. Let me explain. In your view, the intelligence agencies of this country have some bad apples. Thus, it's perfectly fine for the president to publicly disparage the agencies and side with other nations. Police have been implicated in many questionable shootings of black men and boys. When "the left" protests those shootings and tries to paint cops as dirty, they are met with accusations of being "anti law-and-order." In other words, its fine for the president to cast doubt on Federal law enforcement, but how dare protesters cast doubt on local law enforcement.

  3. Nothing special? Mayfield was the motherfucking Big XII freshman of the year while at Tech. Kyler Murray was the not only a 5 star but the #1 DT QB in the country and fucking undefeated as a high school QB and in his first start at Aggy he ran threw for 223 and ran for 156, putting him in a statical place with only Cam Newtown in the SEC. It's possible to debate and have conversation without blowing smoke out of your ass or trying to pawn either of those guys off as "nothing special in their previous stops". The problem is that you, and every single fucking Dirt Burglar that posts here at Surly, can't even see straight when someone discusses OU in anything other than glowing praise. Easily the worst fanbase on Surly. Worse than the idiotic Aggy that post here, which should be humiliating for you and your toothless brethren but the meth has probably cooked away any pride. The funniest thing is that I said "I'm not saying Riley isn't a good offensive coach or QB coach but I could argue with his impact on the 2 first rounders". The reality is that until Riley identifies a QB, recruits him, and then that player goes on to success at OU and in the draft there is a significant question mark to bring to recruits, WHICH WAS IN FACT THE POINT OF MY REPLY IN THE FIRST PLACE. You don't have to like it, but it's fact. Five seasons in a row with a transfer starting QB at OU, Riley's entire Sooner career. Fact. Austin Kendal transfer. Fact. Riley was a cunty bitch about his transfer. Fact. Chris Robison dismissed from the team. Fact. Jalen Hurts brought in because Riley didn't believe in Kendall. Fact. Do you disagree with a single thing there? Do you think that with those indisputable facts that there might be a place for discussion on Riley? Or is your butthurt too strong? Oh, and fuck OU.

  6. Reading this thread is surreal. I think the whiners are just pissed that Dany’s big heel turn is delayed and so is, apparently, the Night King’s trip to King’s Landing. What a bunch of fucking cardboard boxes some of you people are. I think Derka watches this show while wearing an ascot and monocle and smoking a fucking pipe.

  8. Frankly, I think he was listening to his followers. He is a reflection of that part of the electorate more than they are a reflection of Trump. Trump tapped into a message that provided him admiration and support. He merely gave voice to the deplorables. Rush, Atwater, Ailes, Manafort, and Stone cultivated that part of the electorate. It's reaping time. The crop is rotten by intention.

  12. Cool fucking episode. For those who could not enjoy it due to wanting more sound military tactics, the history channel is that way. You are watching the wrong show. I think the episode was a hell of a technical and directorial achievement. That was what, at least a 70 minute battle sequence? Zoomed in and out of scale, transitioned between subdivided acts, tracked several characters through an amazing amount of chaos, held my interest throughout and ratcheted up the tension to a great climax for Arya to dispatch the Night King. You could nitpick shit along the way. Aforementioned military boneheadedness. It would have had more emotional impact if a major character died. But who gives a fuck? This was epic filmmaking at its best. The whole was so much greater than the sum of its parts. It Seems that everyone who made it to the north had their better nature come through when it mattered most. But now, with the dead defeated, they are free to resume their pursuit of power. It will be interesting to see how the war for the iron throne plays out.

  15. You are laughably wrong. Obama not letting all the country's automotive manufacturing go down the tubes, thereby stopping a ripple effect of closed suppliers and dependent businesses (everything from lunch counters to raw product suppliers of suppliers), is an ode to successful Democratic economic policies. The ship was righted. We did not lose our auto industry because O did not listen to morons who wanted to 'burn it down and let the free marker build it up'. That is the same kind of stupid as trickle down. And yet, a gullible base eats that nonsense up. Sad.

  18. it's obvious that the show left the book source material. writing, dialogue, plot lines have all been weak. still a tremendous series. liked the episode from a theatrical standpoint but they've gone hollywood and diverted from much of the book and important shit. - no background on night king or his motives. what the fuck? - too scared to kill off important characters. grrmartin wasn't scared of killing off key people. show creators are. - the whole azor ahai prophecy went to shit. seriously, what the fuck? - in the series, bran has become a useless shithead who does absolutely nothing to advance the show's plotlines. no way he's this useless in the books to come. i guess we'll have to wait for grrmartin to finish his books to get basic questions answered.

  22. one of the low points of the series for me. in a show where significant characters die, i never ever want to think one can be "brought back". especially since for a long stretch, this was a series based in reality in an imaginary world. the more it went towards dragons, magic spells, 3-eyed-ravens, and zombies, the lower my interest level went.

  24. It's a feedback loop, with each party ratcheting up intensity based on the feedback based on reward/encouragement from the other party. It's human psychology (and of course, thus not confined to the right -- I remember 20 years ago, reading an article on some of the local "Critical Mass" bicycle protesters riding around on one of their "marches" or whatnot. Their rhetoric started with the usual tropes about making the roads safer for cyclists...by the end of the ride, folks were chanting about going to the animal shelter to "liberate the animals!" Feedback loop.) Trump validates them. It emboldens them. They validate Trump. It emboldens him. Repeat, as the temperature rises.

  25. Even accepting the Night King as so simple-minded leaves plenty of completely unexplained questions. Why did the NK have such an interest in gory, large-scale art installations? Something that was seemingly so significant that it was featured three different times, including in the series premiere and the season premiere and yet was apparently ultimately meaningless? Why did the NK decide that NOW was the time to march south after waiting thousands of years? Accepting Bran’s explanation for why the NK wants to kill Bran, what’s the rush? If he is always able to find Bran, why not stand back and let his wights kill literally everybody else before tracking down Bran? He doesn’t even have his wights take out Theon first? Just because he wants to risk it all in order to flex on Theon? The NK being immune to everything but dragon glass, having been created by dragon glass, makes some sense. But why can he also be killed by Valyrian steel? He’s immune to the fire of Valyrian dragons so it’s not simply some Valyrian magic shit.

  28. Loved the episode overall and it exceeded my expectations. The entire episode had my heart racing like watching the 4th quarter in a close Horns game. Probably the most tense episode of TV I’ve ever watched. What I liked: -Arya fighting on the roof and later getting the final kill. She’s been my favorite character since she said “A girl is Arya Stark of Winterfell and I’m going home.” So glad it wasn’t John killing the Night King. -Jorah defending Dany to the end. If he was going to die, this was his perfect end. -Lyanna Mormont killing the giant like a boss. One of the most fearless people in the show. -Melisandre lighting the Dothraki swords on fire only to see them extinguished in the dark. -Pretty much all of Melisandre’s scenes for that matter - lighting the trenches on fire, telling Davis she would die before dawn, giving Arya a critical pep talk, and walking off to her own death. -Theon protecting Bran. I’m anti-Theon but he definitely completed his redemption story in my book. -Dragon vs. dragon fighting was pretty cool. -The music, or in some cases the silence, was great. What I didn’t like: -No shocking deaths. Jorah, Lyanna, Theon, Berick, and Eddison. They all seemed predictable and expendable. Didn’t really feel like GoT to have all top characters survive the battle of all battles, especially given that many of them seemed completely overwhelmed in combat. -Dany was sort of meh. She burned some stuff with Drogon but spent far more time being lost and out of place. -Bran still seems worthless. He was bait and that’s it. If the Night King had killed him, so what? Seems like the world would go on just fine without his smug 3ER nonsense. -I wish Tyrion would’ve had a stronger role. Kept thinking his wits would provide a crucial turning point but he did nothing. I guess he’ll finally get his moment against Cersei? -The dead coming alive in the crypt was kinda stupid given the fact that a wight couldn’t punch through a wooden crate in season 7. The episode would’ve been just fine if that hadn’t occurred. -What dumbass decided that Ghost should charge into the night? Hoping Ghost survived somehow but that was a poor use of a direwolf and continues the trend of underutilizing then throughout the series. -No one ever fought one of the WW generals or whatever they’re called. Would’ve liked to see Brienne or Jaime go head to head with one. -Tormund was MIA most of the episode unless I just missed it. Maybe that seems like a lot of gripes but overall the high points far outweigh the shortcomings and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hope the final 3 episodes can come close to this.

  35. i took that scene as her being scared shitless and... not quite panicked but on her heels. She makes it through with the help of the hound and lazarus and then the red lady tells her what she needs to hear to understand that a) she is a fucking killer b) this is her purpose and c) she is able to do this. Confidence restored, back to being the Arya that fed Walder Frey his children. I mean obviously that's a synopsis, but I think the point of the scene was to give some emotional whatever to her character. She's an assassin, she's not a robot and is not without fear.

  36. Fished POC and Rockport this weekend. Friday was tough af. Tons and tons of redfish but worst lock jaw I can remember. Saturday we caught pretty good but I’ve never been muscled in on so many times in my life. I had two boats get between me and my boat at Jaybird. Then get pissed when I walked back to the boat? Wtf, you came and parked between us, prick. Then same boat does it again about an hour later. Moved onto mesquite and Ayers but wind had both completely blown out, totally trashed. Lots of flounder in the backlakes and drains. Lots of reds but no size. All our our trout were 18-22” with exception of a few 16’s and a single 15”. I snapped my go to loomis on a large trout that got sideways. BIG girl and of course, on day before tournament. Pretty sure I subconsciously thumbed spool or something, drag was pretty light but snapped about 6” below the lowest eye, deep in the rod. Maddens was same as usual, half glorious, half am I going to get shanked by this bay shrimper shooting pool. I’m certain I had 100 beers there Saturday and am still not all there. Could hear the live music from crawfish festival from the front porch. Back to real life again. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  40. We just got back from POC. Friday morning, did a quick run over by Decros Point/ Bird Island with the wife and the oldest. Nothing really happening. Found some blue water coming in with the tide and fished the color change, but only caught a big gafftop and a 12 golden croaker. There was bait there. If it had just been the old man and I, we would have waded it and found some trout. Helped the old man install a new Minnkota trolling motor with the ipilot on his Majek. He is pretty pumped to try it out next trip. My buddy hired a guide and they went to jetties. His daughter caught her first oversized Red and he brought in a beautiful 25 inch trout. We hired a flounder guide Friday night and took my dad, a buddy, and two teenagers. Was first time hiring a guide flounder . Was a long night. We left at 9:30pm and got back after 2am. Managed to find 7 keepers. Was disappointed there wasn’t much action, but everyone enjoyed themselves. I judged the POC crawfish festival on Saturday. Bloody Mary category was pretty fun. Some creative submissions and several tasty ones at that. Side dish competition was pretty tasty, except for the assholes who submitted deviled eggs. Ain’t nobody wanna taste your nasty deviled eggs that have been sitting in the turn in box for an hour. The crawfish competition was ok. They have been sitting in the turn in box for at least 30 min, so they definitely weren’t warm. You had to really standout to get noticed. Same team won third year in a row. 40 teams entered. Bri Bagwell was the headliner. Other than needing to eat a couple of sandwiches, she was entertaining and good singer. They didn’t fence off the beach this year, so you could sit in a chair drinking beer and listening to music and the kids could run out and play on the beach and come back when they were tired. We managed to leave with the same amount of kids we came with, so that is good. The development around POC is at an all time high. People building and clearing land like crazy.
