  4. I'll only point out what's in the later post I made. The study started 1932 with no known cure for syphilis. In 1943, penicillin came along but those running the study chose not to use it for men in the study. In 1972, 1972!, a newspaper article draws attention to the still ongoing study leading to its discontinuation. And it's just one piece of evidence regarding the place of black American in society. The National Guard bombed Black Wall Street in Tulsa during that shameful massacre which was later called a race riot. Right now, black families are losing property, mostly rural farms, that their ancestors got after the Civil War but without formal title. Carpetbaggers steal it from them legally by using deed law. This is a political post, I know. It isn't partisan, however. Black distrust of the US or local government is a million miles from being unfounded or unhinged. The governments they have and do distrust have, sadly, been run by both parties over the decades. It's an American problem. I'll hop off the soapbox now. edit I missed the expiration date on this derail. Humble apologies. Hell, abject apologies.

  9. Every other first world country has figured out how to pay restaurant workers a living wage without the industry collapsing. And here we are int America standing around like a bunch of retards in a circle jerk complaining that a 35 cent increase in the cost of a $9 burrito infringes on our god given right to pay as little as possible.

You fell victim to one of the epic backfires - the most famous of which is "never get involved in a sweetheart condo deal with Russian oligarchs" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go in against an online moron when logic is on the line"! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...

  13. GIVE ME SOCIOPATHY OR GIVE ME DEATH! Breckenridge, CO. A mountain resort neighborhood south of Breckenridge, CO had to be evacuated Sunday when a self-described “freedom loving libertarian” lost control of a brush burn they had started in spite of an area wide burn ban due to longstanding drought conditions. The owner of the property, Jerry Davis, had previously railed against such burn bans on social media, stating emphatically, “Fire bans don’t prevent forest fires...” Firefighters responded to the blaze quickly, and were able to keep the conflagration contained to Mr Davis’ property. Damage was limited to a partially constructed home and trailer that was being used as temporary housing. No humans were harmed. Gritty, the beloved Philadelphia Flyers mascot, has indicated he would be traveling to the area later this week to tour the devastation.

  18. So this 120,000 a year, is that calculated via math math, or from waiter math? Waiter Math is where you take your best night of the year, round it up a little, and multiply it by how many days you worked that year, rounded up. And you leave out the tips that you paid out to your bartender buddies all over town like a drunken gay sailor on St. Patrick's, except that wasn't on St. Patrick's day, that was after every shift.

  20. Anecdotally, it seems like many of the more competent service industry folks have found better things to do — with better pay, more stable work, and fewer interactions with the hoards of sociopaths looking to take out their life frustrations on a stranger — those insane people who are apparently everywhere that take such joy in the suffering of others. So while you’re berating you’re server for the cold burger and for forgetting to bring you your Shirley Temple, take some comfort that the old, competent server has made a better life. Rather than a crisis of refills, we just might be witnessing the American dream in action on a large scale. Or you know, the entire social order was upended, the world was shut down, lots of people died, we all lost our minds, and maybe transitioning out of that pit might have a few hiccups. All I know is that I never got my hash browns with my Father’s Day omelette and I was left hungry.

  23. Oh hey a surly tangent that I'm qualified for. FWIW I have a master's in clinical research and work managing a couple federal healthcare research projects The 20th century was like the wild west for research. There was a huge surge in interest but minimal regulation. The Tuskogee syphilis study was probably the most fucked up one in the US, but some of the other biggies were the monster study (1939), project mk-ultra (1953-73; yes it's real, no they didn't invent mind control), and the infamous stanford prison experiments (1971). And none of that even comes close to the fucked-upness of the Nazi human experiments or Japanese Unit 731 during WW2. Of course, there was also a lot of good, ethical research that revolutionized medicine and broadened the scope of human knowledge. Watson and Crick famously discovered the DNA double helix structure in 1953 (shoutout Rosalind Franklin), and the field of psychology basically went from Freud's horny fever dreams to the respectable field we know today due to the focus on studying the mind during this time. Importantly, all the terrible stuff led to a ton of regulation and a focus on ethics. The Nuremberg trials led to the establishment of the Nuremberg Code in 1948. It advocated voluntary participation, informed consent, avoiding harm, and ensuring quality. You might be thinking 'no shit,' but it's a big deal. In the US, congress responded to the Tuskogee syphilis study by passing the National Research Act of 1974, which would result in the Belmont Report (1979) that still guides research ethics today. You'll notice all the stuff above happened before that point. None of it would be approved today. Hell, it takes a month for my review board to approve an eight word change to our protocol. Modern research in the US is well regulated and very conscious of its ethical concerns. It's also an important part of our power on the global stage, but that's a different conversation. Bonus fun fact: when a researcher is awarded a grant, they don't make any money from it.

  33. I can unequivocally say that my situation and experience was easily the outlier where I worked and in past experiences it would have been at other restaurants I was at as well. I was with this particular company for several years. There were people there longer than I was who just did it because the job mostly paid their bills. For me yes it was a very good experience and that had nothing to do with the monetary aspect of the job. I placed a high value on the people I consistently worked with, be it the bartender or host or the cooks that were great at their job. I also thoroughly enjoyed the interactions with the mostly tourist guests we got from around the world. There are several that invited me to see them should I ever travel to where they live. I will eventually take up some of them on that when I get to visit Finland, Brazil and Australia among some other locales. There were several Dominican women in the kitchen that I can say worked harder at what they did than anyone I have worked with in my life. I can only think of a few people who worked as hard as they during my restaurant experiences. Overall though the industry is a place where the owners are now reaping what was sown years before the pandemic turned everything upside down. Treating people like easily replaceable parts and the overall lack of respect management shows to employees in this line of work makes it hard for many people to want to return to this. There are restaurants who are run by folks who genuinely care about their employees, but those are going to also be outliers.

Go start another thread if you want to talk about Diners Drive-ins and Dives.
