to continue with the good vibes, about an hour before the game, when AF was starting to warm up, CJ Dornak was walking by the left field stands. He had thrown the last few innings in the afternoon game. There was a kid with a glove in the stands, so Dornak struck up a conversation and started playing catch with the kid. Soon, every kid with a glove made a beeline to the section and before long, Dornak was playing catch with about 10-15 kids. He was chatting them up and being real friendly. Some of the kids were trying to show off their arms and were absolutely gunning it at him point blank, and he just made jokes about how he was only a pitcher and not a fielder and was lucky to catch such fast throws. He kept at it for maybe 20 minutes or so. When he finally had to go he came up with some trivia question for the kids and the one who got it right got to keep the ball. As he walked off the adults in the section gave him a huge ovation, and you could see him get a little emotional. Stuff like this is why I love baseball. AF is a class act team.35 points

I think the issue is fucking Boomers. We wouldn't hire these old fuckers to work for us because their brains don't work that well anymore, but they're running the fucking country. And they are racist as shit, they hate LGBTQ people and they vote. Lord, do they vote because they love being in charge and won't let go of the reigns until they die off in sufficient numbers that they can't dominate elections anymore. Their brains are stuck in the 80s and think that's how everything should be forever. Fucking worst generation ever. By a landslide.20 points

I was watching that also from the stands. Super cool, knowing that the kids loved it, but you know he did too. Being a Senior, he was soaking it in, knowing that could be (was) his last game before taking on much larger things in life. Post-game, AF players stayed on the field forever. Their 2B Tamiya, went out to 2B, sat down next to the bag and others followed and did the same. Taking in the Disch and their last time playing a kids game. I hung around and spoke with Coach Kazlausky, congratulating him on their season and his approach to baseball, but more importantly preparing his young men for their future in the AF and beyond. The dude is the real deal, the brief conversation was great with him turning his wrist to show his bracelet with friends names inscribed, as he asked about the one I was wearing also. Again, another first time seeing something like that at the Disch (and I've been coming to this ballpark since it was built) this year. We've had the Texas flag unfurled pre-game, a 30 home run season (hopefully more), an opposing team paying respect to the EYES (multiple x's), and fans (largest "actual" game attendance 8,502) doing the wave from foul pole to foul pole on Saturday night. In case you didn't get to witness Coach K & Air Force Baseball this year in person, but would like too.... you'll get your chance next April as they are already scheduled for a midweek contest. 🤘19 points

I honestly don't have a problem with people like you owning a high-capacity semi-automatic rifle. Even one chambered for military rounds that are optimized for people damage (and are coincidentally good for feral pig control). That is your right. But I don't think that right should trump the right to life of those Uvalde children, and it sounds like you would agree. I think both your rights as a gun owner and mass shooting victims rights to life can be protected. Regulate the ownership of guns to ensure that the pool of gun owners does not include people like Salvador Ramos. That's it, and it would not be hard if the majority of gun owners were of your mind. Provided they can pass a vetting process to ensure they are responsible, law-abiding owners, everyone gets to keep the guns they have now, or want to own in the future. They just have to accept a vetting process, just like we all do before we can legally purchase or drive a car, or legally hunt wild game, or construct a habitable dwelling, etc... But it is when gun owners not like you take a hard line stance against any sort of gun control whatsoever that the claws come out, frustrations mount and people begin to understandably believe there is no way to work with gun owners. So they start to work against gun owners, because the only option being made available to them is the elimination of private gun ownership. I am a gun owner, I love to shoot, I've taught my kids how to shoot. We live on a ranch, and guns are often a necessary tool here. I was away on business two weeks ago, and my 13 year old son had to shoot a rattlesnake that had taken up residence in our barn. My wife was freaking out, I was away, and he took it upon himself to ask her to get the .22 so he could do what needed to be done. She did, and he did -- thoughtfully and safely. I was incredibly proud of him and view it as a huge milestone in his becoming a man. But if the only choice being offered to me is that experience of gun ownership, or a growing pile of dead kids that will never have a chance to become men (or women), then I have to side with people like Longhorn_Fan68. Take the fucking guns. But I would much rather gun owners just work with the rest of society to make that unnecessary. Our internal brinksmanship is so fucking stupid.18 points

There’s not a valid argument and I own one. They are just fun to shoot. I’m good with ammo only at ranges. I’m also good selling it back or turning it in. It’s just a gun. [emoji2373]18 points

"carpetbaggers, slimeballs, dweebs, and generalized assholes" In scientific I-Know-Ever-Damn-Thing fashion I must reply that since you are asking 4 separate things, I must respond with 4 answers. 1. Carpetbaggers: Texas has doubled in population since you were Dazed and Confused. Part of that is babies, who all start out in the "Asshole" category, so we'll put them aside. The rest include normal folk just occasionally moving, as normal folk are wont to do, others fleeing crushing poverty in Louisiana or possibly even Mexico, and then the true Carpetbagger, somebody who got run out of his home state and would not be accepted in Texas either, except: he bought a hat, he bought a truck, and he goes around all down-homey except for occasionally saying "y'all" when he means one person. 2. Slimeballs: these are everywhere, but flock to areas with new construction so I guess you got lucky just like Florida. Similar to a Carpetbagger, but do not buy hats or attempt to blend. You can summon them by saying "Sunbelt" 3 times. 3. Dweebs: With enough AC and screen-time, any human being transforms into the Dweeb. Welcome to the future. 4. Generalized Assholes: You're on this site. I'm on this site. We're all on this site.15 points

June 6 today. While your standing in line for your soy latte today, complaining about how slow it's moving, remember there were men on Normandy Beach just hoping to make it 100 yards.13 points

Sadly, Speed Goat passed away at the end of April. He was a friend. His obituary is one of the best you'll ever read: https://www.gosanangelo.com/obituaries/sas021074 and, if you knew his persona, he looked exactly like you thought he would:11 points

McConnaughey just published an editorial calling for "gun responsibility legislation" -- https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2022/06/06/matthew-mcconaughey-editorial-time-responsible-choices-guns/7523836001/ The TLDR version: it calls for 1) universal background checks, 2) 21 years old to buy a gun, 3) red flag laws with due process, and 4) waiting period to buy an assault rifle (I'd expand that to include handguns, but that's what he said). Seems reasonable. MM tries (much to my frustration) to walk a "middle path." I certainly think this 4-point position is a middle path sort of thing. In fact, we could draft a piece of legislation, call it the "Matthew McConaughey Firearms Responsibility Act," and introduce it in the Texas Lege and US Congress tomorrow. And everyone here knows that the bill would be killed more quickly than an American elementary student facing an AR-15. It would be killed by one party. And we all know which party it is. So does MM. As long as there is a GQP, not one of MM's ideas will come to fruition. Not a single one. His editorial is a masturbatory waste of time.10 points

but how many people had mexican food for lunch? because that's as relevant as what you're telling me. 100% of gun deaths are accidental/preventable. 99% of abortions take place in the first two trimesters. when people argue against abortion, they use the most extreme examples (are you saying you're ok with a woman who's 8.5 months pregnant getting an abortion?!?). when people argue against guns, they can use, well, pretty much any example they want, because they're all extreme. to use your own numbers against you, in 2019, there were 45k firearms related deaths. in 2019 there were 6,300 3rd trimester abortions, most of which were to save the life of the mother or other rare fetal anomalies. your opinion is bad, and you should feel bad for posting it.9 points

Today was a travel day. Garner state park to Big Bend. when you travel shit flies around if it’s not locked down tight. I put my money in an envelope, $578.86 in the microwave because fuck it- we’ve never once used the microwave in the entirety of the time we owned the RV. Told my wife that was where the money was. went outside to drink 5 beers before bedtime after a long ass travel day. just got a text from the wife- the 11 year old girl decided she was going to make herself a s’more in the microwave (seriously what the fuck- who makes microwave s’mores?) and ignored the fact that there was a giant fucking envelope in the microwave, started it up to make her smore, and caught the envelope on fire, burning said $578.86 and ruining the microwave. Then she ate the fucking s’more even though, you know, it was in a microwave on fire with metal coins.9 points

Really sick of people acting like everybody should tiptoe around Putin and not "trigger" him. We are on day 103 of his 3-day war, and the notion that countries shouldn't "trigger" Putin comes from the same type of people who cave in and spoil little brats in stores because they are afraid of the brat throwing a temper tantrum in the candy aisle.8 points

So, I guess I'm old-fashioned, but in these days, where naked self-interest seems to be at the forefront of all college sports, I am highly gruntled by displays of sportsmanship post-game. I know AFA is a special case, and post-games are highly truncated by broadcasters, but do we routinely (does anyone) do the "handshake line" anymore? It seems like we might, but all you ever see is when it "turns back on itself" and it's Texas player on Texas player.8 points

but they're not being misused. they're being used as designed. guns were invented to fire projectiles to injure or kill things, right? is there another legal product that, when used properly, as designed, kills things? i can't think of one, but guns are certainly meant to do this. not only that, but the 2nd amendment is expressly written in support of this. the 2nd amendment doesn't say anything about cool collectibles, douchebags posing on instagram, or killing feral hogs. the 2nd amendment is about a well relegated militia in the wake of escaping a society controlled by a king. i don't know the history of guns, but i can guess they were invented to do harm, either while hunting for food (necessary) or winning a war (necessary). guns are not necessary anymore outside of law enforcement (debatable) or the military (are shooting wars still a thing?). if they all disappeared tomorrow, life would go on. more life, actually, if you want to just take a cursory glance at statistics. this argument isn't about the responsible gun owner. laws are not created for the best of us, they are created for the worst, the dumbest, the most irresponsible. and yes, they fuck it up for everyone. sorry, it's time to evolve.7 points

Precisely…bc those of us who do judge harshly do know real victims personally and it’s a gut punch every time you see a UVA Rolling Stone deal or a Duke Lacrosse deal or women doing this in divorce or child custody hearings. We lose huge every time. So fuck Amber Heard. Fuck her. The damage that gets done every damn time to legit cases when fucking assholes like her do this is profound. It’s taken forever and a day for the world at large to see rape and domestic violence as being insidious and it’s still not even where it needs to be. Damn. Her supporters are doing more harm than good by trying to prop her and her case up. Jump ship and find a legit one to support. Stop championing her. She used the movement and she used it for self gain. Jmo…7 points
