Texas O-line talk

Coach pop a bitch

Recommended Posts

If Jones is our 2nd best tackle, wtf is it going to look like when Cosmi is gone?  The #1 criteria for finding our next head coach is having a plan and a track record of recruiting and developing OL.  It's been our achilles heel going on 15 fucking years now.

Scipio Tex absolutely laid into the O-line in his post-game breakdown...

Offensive Line

Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.

Oklahoma now has 15 sacks against Herb Hand's offensive lines over the last two years. Hand can't teach this running game. Pad level is still atrocious. I will continue to write this every week. They think outside zone blocking means standing up and running to a spot instead of seeking violent contact in a coordinated way. If the defender wants to go somewhere, help them and then keep pushing them past the spot they wanted with their own momentum. If they want to plug, seal a side, and let the back choose. Our execution in zone blocking at the point of attack is so poor and we have no idea how to cap play side penetration or win the edge when OU conceded it by alignment with some overloads. We're also not syncing up the RB's steps to the rhythms of the blocking. Shanahan would laugh out loud at our outside zone running game coordination and our inability to marry it to obvious constraints.

Aside from giving up six sacks and a dozen pocket hits on Ehlinger along with no running game, the OL repeatedly beat the offense with killer mistakes. Derek Kerstetter cost Texas 4 points with a foolish personal foul on the 1 yard line. Angilau tossed away a potential score by jumping offsides on a 4th and 2 in Sooner territory that then forced a punt. Then Junior's hold in the 4th overtime created a 1st and goal from the 19 yard line. Sam's improvisation happens a lot more manageably in 10 yard chunks. Once that happened, Longhorn chances of a tying touchdown and two point conversion were cut 80%. OL can't do this to your team. They're supposed to be the steady reliables. The foundation. Not drive killers.

Christian Jones struggled badly with Bonitto and other Sooner edge rushers when they didn't even have to think about run game or honoring the edge. Gave up two sacks and two holds. Instead of helping him on 3rd and long, we put our flexed TEs into the route on nearly every play. Total tight end catches in 53 pass attempts? 2 for 14 yards. Good times. Reveals a strong understanding of risk/reward. Are we under the impression that Travis Kelce is on our roster?

Our second best tackle plays center and right now he's not very good at center. Texas needs a total re-imagining of the OL, but it's probably too late. Four years in and Texas doesn't have a center ready to play football. So they break up one of the more effective pass blocking tackle duos in college football. Absolutely remarkable. Maybe we can shore up middle linebacker by playing Sam there. Would that be a good allocation of resources?

We apparently line up in 12 personnel because we just think it is super important to split Cade Brewer and another TE out in the slot while we drop back pass and never call handoffs to RBs.  And we usually have Eagles lead blocking on WR screens instead of the TEs, too.

It is insane.  Herman hasn’t changed at all since 2017.  It’s going 5 wide with Garrett Gray and Kyle Porter as the primary reads all over again.

Moore blocking for Whittington happens a lot too and is peak mensa

We are basically screwed at OT next year unless Hookfin is a badass who should be playing right now, and Tyler Johnson emerges from convalescence next year as a borderline 5 star RT prospect like he was thought to be at one time in recruiting.  That seems unlikely considering they’re both reserve OGs now, but maybe Hand is just shitty at evaluating his own personnel.  It wouldn’t be the first time with this coaching crew.

Why the hell did the coaches and $9.95ers pump Jones up as our high ceiling OL prospect?  It would be one thing if he were really nimble and athletic but just needed more strength or technique work since he started football late.  But that’s not what is happening.  He stands straight up, bends at the waste, doesn’t move especially well, and gets left in the dust by speed rushers.  This is our athletic upside guy?  Because he’s tall?  Or because he’s not a complete statue like Okafor and Angilau?

Okafor and Angilau are really bad, btw.  I don’t even want to talk more about it. Everyone on the OL except Cosmi is a penalty machine, but these two essentially require someone to just run right into their chests in order to block anyone.  Immobile is an understatement, which is just a tad bit of a problem for a zone blocking offense.

I'm holding out for a savior transfer LT (and hell, a RT as well) who's anxious to play for our new, kick-ass staff. It could happen, right?!?

As has been pointed out a couple of times, zone blocking and a refusal on the part of the offensive scheme to adapt to weaknesses produced by the players in zone blocking  seems to be a or the major issue here.

Hand may not be very good at his job, or he may be ok, but Hermanco seems to be doing him and his players no favors at all.

Which seems to be kind of the hallmark of Herman:  we're going to "impose our will" without regard to talent, scheme, or opponent.

It's stated a little differently than Mack Brown's "philosophy," but has a lot of similarities.

What more needs to be said about the Oline?  They’re absolute garbage and completely uncoached.  Outside of Cosmi and maybe kertstetter, they can all lose their scholarships for all I care.

and for the backups.....how fucking shitty are you to not beat out these chumps?

Injured, freshmen, or injured freshmen. Plus Hand never plays anyone other than the starting 5, it's been an issue with him going on 3 years now. He never replaces anyone in game outside of injury. Just a really shitty coach.

PFF on the top 10 Week 6 performances from NFL draft prospects - Cosmi:

Texas has been airing the ball out like no other team this season, and Cosmi is a big reason why. On 70 pass protection snaps against Oklahoma on Saturday, Cosmi didn’t allow a single pressure or record a single downgrade. And 38 of those 70 qualified as true pass sets for us. That’s some impressive stuff from the redshirt junior left tackle, who now has an 89.8 pass-blocking grade on the season.

Urban Meyer would have the OL situation fixed asap.  Mack fucked it up and Charlie and Herman had no idea how to fix it or didn't care enough.

This is the number one fucking problem(LBing being a close position second) going on for an ENTIRE decade.  I don't want to take a chance on another G5 or flash in the pan to fix this.

Speed is our biggest problem overall.

As someone else previously mentioned, this makes the coaching worse. You've got one side locked down but you won't help the other side out.

Urban's new OL hire will have Karic, Garth,  Majors and Parr to coach up.  There is some talent there.

I’d like to believe christian jones can be coached into a good RT.  hookfin too.  but mentality is often more important than physical tools.  studdard was not impressive at all athletically and yet he would consume and shit out everyone on the OL except sam.  I’m worried the guys on the roster are just delicate pussies.

There isn’t a player on this team that would make the two deep of any of the teams from 2004-2009. If we are being honest probably none of Mack’s teams for sure.

Knowing that our offensive line "is what it is" at this point, our play calling often doesn't help them out.  We aren't going to impose our will and run over people so quit trying. We need more speed runs, outside runs, screens, roll outs, misdirection etc. Motioning a guy across the middle pre-snap to see if they are in man coverage is such a waste right now.  Yeah they are in man... our WRs can't beat man.

OU game we just decided 1st down plays weren't worth it... just call something with little likelihood of working and move on to 2nd down was the decision.

At this point, there are 219 pages of "Fire Tom Herman" and 24 pages of "Texas O-Line Talk" and the O-Line Talk thread is 5 months older. Herman needs to go. Certainly. But by far the biggest problem is the OL, because if we had even a decent OL, we'd be 4-0 and stuck with Herman forever. Those of you who thanked Kansas for getting rid of our last abomination, Charlie Strong, should thank the OL for being so bad for so long. Yes, we need to fire Herman but if we had a decent OL, firing Herman wouldn't even be an option we'd be in a position to be talking about. In essence, our shitty OL gives us leverage over Herman. Strange how that works, is it not?

Who would he replace? He’s the only one with even a shot.

You can’t seriously think Cosmi wouldn’t make the 2-deep on the 09 team. Forget the 2-deep, He’d be the best OL on the entire team.
