IT Scoop, positive vibes on Stroh and Randle

Spoiler

Texas gained two commitments over the weekend, but what did other recruits who took in the Longhorns’ Orange-White Game think of the event, and where does UT figure in their recruitments? Plus, notes on several priority recruitments in the Inside Texas Inside Scoop.

Class Size

With Texas recapturing some recruiting momentum while also in the thick of the Arch Manning chase, numbers are probably the emerging theme in the class. There is more demand for a Texas scholarship than there is supply, at least at most positions. If Texas lands Arch, that will be the case throughout the cycle, and probably the next one too if results meet or exceed expectations on the field this season.

June should provide clarity in the direction the class will ultimately take. Arch will likely decide then, and also the staff will host the summer wave of official visitors on the last two weekends in June.

Kyle Parker, WR, Lucas (Texas) Lovejoy

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound four-star made his way back to Austin for the Spring game on Saturday.

“The visit was great as always, getting to see the coaches and everybody again,” said Parker. “And getting to see the team in action against each other and seeing the coaches in their element.”

Parker holds Texas, Louisville, and Penn State in high regard, with a decision possible as soon as early summer.

“I’ll probably decide sometime in the summer like June, July,” Parker said.

He hasn’t scheduled an official visit to Austin yet, but told Inside Texas he definitely wants to take one.

Will Randle, TE, New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman

The NOLA-raised product and Texas lean made it back to Austin, and as usual, he loved it.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound three-star tight end enjoyed another weekend of the Austin experience.

As for a decision timetable, a source close Randle thinks we could see something soon, maybe early summer. The Longhorns have set the table for Arch Manning’s top pass-catcher and continue to look solid in both pursuits.

Spencer Shannon, TE, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei

Texas extended an offer to 6-foot-7, 240-pound West Coast talent on Sunday. Shannon has a handful of offers including Washington, UCLA, and Cal, but that Texas offer might’ve hit different.

He loves Steve Sarkisian and Jeff Banks, and admires how they use the tight end on their offense. He’s also making UT a priority when it comes to taking his official visits.

“Definitely going to official (to Austin),” said Shannon. “I have some Mater Dei conflicts with the two weekends Coach Banks prefers, but I am sure we can work something out. We are going to talk later this week. A UT OV is a major priority.”

Ian Reed, OL, Austin (Texas) Vandegrift and Connor Stroh, OL, Frisco (Texas) Wakeland

Both Texas o-line targets were on hand for the spring game Saturday. There is not a timeline for Reed’s decision, but the ultimate decision is expected to be an academic/football decision. The Alabama offer didn’t register for Reed. The Clemson offer did, however. The Reed family is originally from the Midwest, so the Ohio State and Michigan offers did register. The Longhorns will be very much in this recruitment until the end, as of today.

“It was a great visit,” said Reed. “The town and the atmosphere were rallying behind the spring game it felt great to see some football in Austin. The offense looked great, it looked exciting.”

Stroh plans to make a summer decision. The Longhorns are very likely to receive the final official visit in late June. Texas A&M is certainly a threat with both parents having gone to school in College Station. Stroh has gotten close to Texas freshman Cole Hutson during the recruiting process, and that is helping Texas.

“It was a good day for sure,” said Stroh. “Always fun.”

Antonio Robinson, CB, Miami (Fla.) Florida Christian School

Robinson was a surprise visitor over the weekend and he loved the trip. He was amazed by the sheer size of the school and said that actually appealed to him. He said Terry Joseph will visit him in two weeks and at that point they’ll discuss an official visit date. He spoke very highly of Joseph’s passion and knowledge of the game.

He wants to make a decision at the end of June, though he’s still figuring out his visit schedule. He will take an official visit to Pitt towards the end of June. He’ll see LSU unofficially in May. Schools he mentioned as having the best relationship with included Texas, LSU, Penn State, WVU, and Michigan.

Robinson wants to go into physical therapy and then own his own business.

Defensive coaches are wanting him to get faster, just like their counterparts on offense. Robinson has run a 10.67 100m this track season.

Dre’lon Miller, ATH, Silsbee (Texas) (2024)

It wasn’t going to take long before the Longhorns offered the explosive four-star junior athlete. With offers from UT, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech, and Miami and Florida State in the mix as well, it should come at no surprise the Horns are jumping into the mix.

“From the coaches, it was just the energy and the vibe they bring and from the players, it’s just the bond we have with some of the best recruits they have,” Miller told IT.

His 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams are regional bound, but what position is Texas recruiting him at for the next level?

“Honestly, just an athlete,” Miller said. “Just put me on the field.”

Miller will return to Austin in June for an on-campus camp.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

The Texas Longhorns offered Cypress (Texas) Cy-Woods On300 O-lineman Terrance Green on Sunday. The offer didn’t come in person as the Greens were in a minor car accident on the way to Austin on Saturday, and didn’t get to make the trip. The Longhorns were planning to offer in-person had Green made it to campus. Texas defensive line coach Bo Davis is expected by Cy-Woods this week at some point. “Excited” was the word used after Green received his offer last night.

Texas truly covets Monroe (La.) Neville’s Zalance Heard, the No. 16 player in the On300. We shall see how the recruitment ends up, but one thought right now is that Heard is not a lock to end up at LSU. Texas continues to receive very positive feedback from Heard, and from a key family member.

On3 Consensus four-star and Temple (Texas) athlete Mikal Harrison-Pilot released a top 12 on April 7th, but there are five schools emerging from the 12. California, Oklahoma, TCU, Houston and Texas have been surging in the relationship-building department.

In speaking with a source close to the recruitment, the versatile athlete currently likes the Cal staff the most of anyone. After the Cal staff, TCU wide receivers coach Malcolm Kelly is one of MH-P’s favorites. All five of the programs are recruiting Harrison-Pilot as a receiver. There is a strong relationship with Steve Sarkisian and receivers coach Brennan Marion, but the Longhorns must win on the field this season. There are reservations about the Longhorns within the circle. MH-P will be a long game recruitment with the likelihood of the OV process beginning during the season. It’s not a lock that the talented playmaker will sign in December, as of today.

On3 Consensus four-star and Houston (Texas) Cy-Ranch DL Ashton Porter should be considered leaning toward going out of state according to a source. The Miami Hurricanes made an impact with their mid-March offer. Porter will also make an official visit to Northwestern in May. If Texas is to stay in this recruitment, it will be a long game recruitment. Porter told On3 Sunday that he now plans to wait to announce until the Under Armour All-America Game in the first week of January 2023.

Sounds like we are slow playing Porter.  Think staff really likes Shelby and I wrote a while back, but I think Spencer took Porter's spot.  I think they might take him in the end if we are taking a third EDGE/DE player and everyone else falls through.

This is a very good take, and likely accurate. Porter isn’t a terrible croot, but he’s overrated as a result of a great self marketing campaign by attending all the big camps. He also wants to commit in January and even if Texas does have a spot, it probably won’t be open in January. I also don’t think he has the frame we want for edge, he’s more interior DL when you account for growth.

Texas has moved on IMO.

Gerry said on the IT podcast that Porter is talking about committing at the UA game in January (as noted in that report) and Gerry said the offer might not be there if he waits that long. You may be correct.

It seems like we're high on Lafayette Kaiuway as well. Are we really going to take multiple 3-Star TEs? Especially if there is a numbers crunch? I'm still not sold on Randle as a take unless it's to get Arch.

Same here. Thought Lafayette was our guy, Randle was to help get Arch, and that’s it. Make they’re just not getting positive vibes from Lafayette right now.

247/ON3 have our TE targets ranked as follows:

UR/#33 Connor Cox

#24/#35 Lafayette Kaiuway

UR/#43 Will Randle

#42/#51 Spencer Shannon

Not sure what our game plan here is. Maybe Shannon is an OT prospect if he can put on 60 pounds?

It's likely they got some assurances from Randle this weekend and are putting pressure on Kaiuway for the "last spot". Shannon could be a tackle prospect, but he's also a Mater Dei kid that loves Texas, which feels like an offer you make at some point in the spring anyway.

Based on the body types and guys our OL coach targets I'd wager that last line is not the case.

Our most realistic board looks Will Randle with one of LK and Shannon.

Yesterday in the prospect board I mentioned I wouldn’t be surprised if an EDGE player we weren’t currently talking much about ended up in the class. The staff seems to be taking the patient approach with Colton Vasek and Ashton Porter, and with Dylan Spencer in the class, that’s not surprising. On the other edge, Texas is in good shape for Braylan Spencer and Derion Gullette, who is also being recruited at off-ball linebacker. Today, South Oak Cliff’s Billy Walton committed to Oklahoma State. He‘s a quality prospect but it’s not hard to deduce what happened there.

Given the leverage the staff has — big EDGE/DE class last year, Spencer already committed, potential Arch bounce — expect them to aim as high as the reciprocal interest they receive.

In line with that, Tausili Akana tells @Justin Wells he’ll be back in Austin soon and is working on visit dates currently with his dad.

That’s interesting enough, but wait, there’s more.

Also from the Prospect Board, @stevehorn, who hasn’t been wrong since about 2012, posted this:

“This might be something to watch. Tausili Akana from Hawaii (#9 Edge, #84 recruit) has a sister who was a starting back row player (DS) for Nebraska last season. She just announced that she is entering the portal and today she started following a number several Texas volleyball players. One interesting note is that Nebraska is thought to be leading for Tausili and he and his father just visited Nebraska over the weekend. After their trip, the sister entered the portal.”

Texas recruiting assistant Jake Langi is certainly paying attention to this development:

While Akana is originally from Hawaii, it’s worth noting he currently lives in Utah. One acquaintance of IT who is in the football scene in Hawaii tends to think Akana won’t go further than Utah for college football. That written, his interest in UT sure seems genuine.

Most of this is Prospect Board fodder, but it’s in line with what we’ve been saying about the staff playing the long game, especially with Walton choosing Ok. St. today.

Buck with potential, depending on what he can comfortably carry, to play Jack. Already shines in more of a Jack role but I’m not sure if he’ll be 250 or 270.

Gerry:

The Texas Longhorns class of 2023 offensive line board continues to take shape with the spring evaluation period underway. Offensive line coach Kyle Flood is hitting top 2023 and 2024 targets around the state of Texas this week.

Coming off arguably the best offensive line class Texas has ever signed, building the line with back-to-back strong classes is paramount. So far, the returns are moving in a positive direction for the Texas staff.

Harris Sewell continues to like the Horns

Flood’s first stop this week was Odessa Permian. Flood left no doubt with On3 Consensus four-star Harris Sewell how much he is coveted.

The Longhorns are in the final five for Sewell along with Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Clemson.

The Longhorns have made up plenty of ground in the last couple of months. Texas would be considered the favorite if Arch Manning were to pick Texas. If Manning opts for Georgia or Alabama, Texas has still put themselves in position to win out at the end of the day. Sewell is a possibility to make an OV to Texas in late June.

DFW targets likely to make June OV’s

Flood made his way to the Metroplex after his Odessa stop to check in on Connor Stroh and Andre Cojoe.

The 6-foot-7, 345-pound Stroh is expected to release a top five on Friday, and the Longhorns will certainly make the cut. Stroh and Flood have formed a very strong relationship. As has Stroh and Texas freshman Cole Hutson. Stroh would have been a near lock for Texas prior to the Texas A&M offer.

Cojoe continues to be thought to be the lineman closest to jumping into the 2023 class. The Longhorns lead the On3 RPM by a considerable amount.

Texas is likely to push for official visits June 25-26 for the duo, and other top offensive line targets. Both players are expected to make summer decisions.

Jaydon Chatman and Ian Reed top CenTex targets

Flood was by Harker Heights on Wednesday to check in on On3 Consensus four-star Jaydon Chatman. Chatman made a visit to Oklahoma last weekend for the Sooner spring game. Texas continues to receive positive feedback from Chatman and his circle. The Longhorns were the first offer, and has hosted the athletic and versatile lineman more than anyone else.

Texas is expected by Vandegrift this week to check in on On300 No. 290 Ian Reed. The Longhorns have received positive feedback from Reed and family since the spring game visit. Reed’s recruitment could play out longer than some others, barring a change.

Texas and Vysen Lang heating up

In speaking with a source in Alabama, Inside Texas believes the Longhorns would accept a commitment from IOL Vysen Lang. The 6-foot-4, 330-pound Lang made an unofficial visit to Texas March 22, and was offered by the Longhorns.

Lang released a top 10 on April 17 with Texas making the cut.

Texas offensive line coach Kyle Flood is expected to visit Lang’s high school in two weeks according to a source close to his recruitment.

Is Texas not interested in TJ Shanahan? Or is TJ not interested in Texas?

Shanahan is the type of guy Herman would have chased after for 10 months thinking he had a legitimate shot because he was right down the road while ignoring backup options and we would be left scrambling in November.

Glad we identified early that it was going to be uphill battle and have seemed to move on to other guys.

Cojoe is super interesting, especially with his young age.

I'm not sure about Stroh yet. I do like that it looks like he cut down on some bad weight but I would have Reed and this guy from Alabama ahead of him right now on the interior.

They seem to like all four. Who knows what the pecking order is though.

Sark/Flood seems to want behemoths at guard, I guess so they can pair duo with play-action down the field which keeps the deep safeties from coming downhill?

I think Stroh is the classic Flood likes him for his size recruit. Not saying he’s bad or anything but I don’t think he’s a top 3-4 target we should be after
