Mamdani literally interviewed hundreds of working class New Yorkers and asked them what matters to them and why they voted for Trump. His platform is based almost entirely on direct feedback from voters, not the pages Jacobin.

Yes, we should absolutely let the free market sort out the housing market in New York, and in San Francisco, LA and DC, where it has been deeply obstructed for 50 years. But more to the point, fantasyland leftist populism is no more the answer to the direction of the party than rapey old men who won’t go away.

That’s a great point I will concede. Leftist populism definitely has the appeal of having voters choose overall terrible policy decisions in favor of their immediate self interest.

I think it’s more likely that no one outside the pages of The Nation or Jacobin thinks “freeze the rents” or “socialize the grocery stores” is sound public policy.

Fine.

Get rid of zoning, too.

I've been happy with what I've seen so far of Scudder.  I hope it resonates enough.  I think the messaging has a chance but you never know.  Well I mean you know.

The party's biggest problem has been internal saboteurs who kneecap younger and more progressive candidates. Scudder's saying all the right things, hopefully the party's conduct aligns with what he's saying. We are way past the point where mere lip service will suffice to cure what ails the Texas Dems.

Someone is going to have to take a page from Trump’s book and grab the party by the pussy.

I think they should probably ditch the term oligarch.

I don’t care for it, either.  I’d use billionaire.  Keep it simple.

It's meant to denigrate billionaires by highlighting their similarity to the parasites that keep Russia in it's shithole state. But yeah, you're right. Comparisons to Russia aren't that bad for Republicans anymore, I suppose

Overlords might be better understood by the stupids.

Last night, I saw in the local NEWS a democratic party member was being investigated for corruption and so he switched parties. The democratic party member crushed it talking about it. The republican could only say, “well we are in power and we welcome him”

Fat rich fucks works better. Maybe just fat cats.

It seems to be working. Anything with -arch in it I think everybody intuitively understands is evil.

Hey man we have been going hard on the "free market will work things out" for decades and the result is that it failed to work things out and generated tons of right and leftwing populists. I am open to new ideas.

I think public grocery stores might be necessary in an environment where the market created powerful monopolies that are creating food deserts. I think social housing might be needed in areas where the market made tons of people homeless.

WTH? When was the last time Bill endorsed anybody? And he does it for that corrupt creep Cuomo?

Well actually that does make sense now that I type it out.

What I am getting at is in terms of policy and politics we need pragmatic leadership and good governance that delivers tangible, long term results. For example, in blue cities like NYC, the “free market” in housing development is a very novel concept. Rent control, a focus on subsidized housing development and a near-total opposition to market development are very old concepts that only made the problem worse. The math doesn’t math for those progressive measures - and most others - and while they are nonetheless wildly popular for large swaths of voters doubling down on them is a terrible idea as a matter of policy.

They are also wildly unpopular with larger swaths of voters. There has been a backlash against progressives in San Francisco, LA, Seattle and Portland. Chciago’s progressive mayor’s approval is at like 20% right now. I’d be hesitant to read much more into the NYC race other than Zohran seems like a really nice guy and the front runner is an old and rapey and killed senior citizens.

Yeah, that is Jennifer Cantu.  She's got her head on right.   Ft Bend has a couple of messes to deal with, but a lot of capable people are rising to the challenge.

Love the videos where 90% of grocery stores are owned by like 4-6 companies who are backed by like the same 2-4 investment groups

Hopefully old Dems understand the message being sent tonight.

But four months of election talk featuring Mamdani and the Jewishest city in the country is going to be hell on earth.

Isn't he polling 20% with Jews? at the end of the day the same fears were had for Sadiq Khan and he has been successful mayor of London.

Not speaking about his ability to be mayor, just how gross this election cycle is about to get.

I'm not sure I can handle the continued social media onslaught, but happy about Mamdani. Time to shake things and put the Democratic Party (including the voters) on notice.

I am a little concerned that the wrong message is gonna be sent by the far left with this Mamdani primary victory. They might think their messaging and policies is what the rest of America wants too, but NYC is its own thing and doesn't represent the rest of the country.

The message should be: Don't be scared. Vote for who you want to lead, not who you think will appease others. Shake things up and reject the old establishment. It can lead to a tidal wave of momentum.

I have no idea how NYC operates, how does vote splintering work? can a Republican capitalize? how stupid is to do ranked choice for primaries but not for elections?
