So we're just glossing over TFB claiming that Gatson is a silent?

Highly doubt that’s the case. The staff isn’t pushing for him at this time. I think we will know alot more about who they want after the weekend when Jones and Blue OV.

Who's next? A look at five commit candidates

Mike Roach

The Longhorns kicked off the first visit weekend of the year with fireworks after hosting a big group and landing a big transfer target in Alabama’s Keilan Robinson. Who’s next for the Longhorns? We take a look at five commit candidates.

Derrick Brown, EDGE, Texarkana Texas High

The word coming out of both Austin and Texarkana is that the Longhorns made a huge statement in the race for one of the top edge rushers in the state of Texas. Brown canceled his Texas A&M visit over the weekend eliminating a major contender for the east Texas star. Oklahoma will be a team to watch as the Sooners have an advantage in Brown’s former teammate Clayton Smith living in Norman, but Texas should be considered the team to beat right now.

Jeremy Patton, LB, Tenaha

Texas already holds the 247Sports Crystal Ball lead for the versatile east Texan, and the Longhorns will have to hold on as Patton takes a few more trips. He’d like to wait until his homecoming game this season to make an announcement on his recruitment, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he pulled the trigger before that time. It’s going to take a big effort from other schools to top his time in Austin.

Brenen Thompson, WR, Spearman

Texas has been gaining ground in this race all spring and they continue to trend well for one of the fastest players in the country. Clemson and Oklahoma State seem to be the two main programs that will provide some opposition for him. The Longhorns have been able to make a strong connection with the family, and they find themselves in position to slam the door on this recruitment with a big visit this month.

Sebastian Cheeks, LB, Evanston (IL.) Township

Cheeks is slated to visit this coming week, and Texas is moving into a strong position for the Midwest defender. The Longhorns have managed to put themselves into a good position despite regional powers Notre Dame and Michigan being in the picture. If Notre Dame pushes, it could change the picture, but the Longhorns are deep in the hunt for Cheeks.

Bryce Anderson, DB, Beaumont Westbrook

The Longhorns have had the buzz for the Golden Triangle star, but they will have to sweat out some other visits this month. The Longhorns will get the final shot for Anderson who will make his decision on July 4 after taking all of his visits. Anderson recently went to Texas A&M, and he will also see Alabama in a couple of weeks before making his way to Austin. The Longhorns are almost home here, but anything can happen when players take visits.

Spoiler

Inside Texas has learned that Owasso High (OK) 2022 DT Chris McClellan is scheduled to be in Austin this weekend for an unofficial visit. The 6-foot-3, 295-pound athletic interior prospect made an OV to Florida over the weekend, and has OV‘s to USC June 18-20 and Ohio State June 25-27. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Alabama are also in the mix.

We can also say that 2022 fast rising DT Hero Kanu (Santa Margarita Catholic) remains scheduled to be in Austin this weekend. The 6-5 near 300-pounder was on campus at Georgia and Alabama last week.

What are we doing on the inside? Feels like they're trying to load up on the interior, but the need is on the ends.

The tape on Damonic Williams is very good. He is strong and quick. He seems like a recruit that we would very much want.

He seems massively underrated to me.  I think he'd be tough to pull from Cal based on the relationships and the love he's shown but who knows.  Cal coaches told him and Justyn Martin (their other commit 4* QB that Michigan and others seem to be drooling over) to go check other places out if they wanted because Covid fucked up their recruiting experience.  We'll see how that works out for them...

Not really, looking at the roster we have a bunch of guys but lack legitimate interior guys long term, especially after this season.

We have a lot of needs at both spots. Our DL is talented now, but the situation gets a lot dicier in 1-2 years when all of Collins, Sweat and Coburn are gone, so we definitely need to load up on DL. I’ve been glad to see how many OOS DL we’re going after instead of settling for in-state guys way down the order.

It’s hard to say right now who our most likely commits are, but we’re in it for enough quality prospects that I think we’ll end up with a good DL class.

Edge will be interesting. We really need to land Brown. I’m not even sure what other Edge prospects we have a good shot with at this point.

With Patton's athleticism I can see him being a guy we put at the edge position.

Why do you think he’ll be hard to pull from Cal? Unless he’s a legacy or has some other specific connection, I highly doubt he ends up there.

Unless his measurements are way off or he has crazy long arms, he’s probably too short to play edge full time and his athletic profile seems to fit ILB a lot better.  I think it’s being reported the staff is recruiting him at ILB.

I think Swanson ends up at SDE, but we need Brown and hopefully another. We need quality on the interior, but we don't need quantity the way we do at Edge, imo.

A lot of reasons... under Wilcox, Cal has been most successful recruiting specific personality types and Williams fits the profile to a T.  There has been a long time, strong mutual interest and Williams committed when the Cal coaches weren't even pushing him hard.  He has HS teammates on the team who have confirmed his impressions of the team culture as well.  He shut down, SC, Washington and Michigan early and has been all Cal for quite a while.  So is it possible he moves on?  Sure but I'll believe it when I see it.

I don’t think Swanson is an edge. He’s likely going to be a down linemen for us in PK’s 2 and 3 man fronts. I don’t think he can play edge/OLB in most formations.

And we do need some numbers at DL. Going into 2023 our DL position room will only be Broughton, SGW, Jordan Thomas, Murphy, and Sorrell. Maybe Abiara though I think the staff was saying he’d play OLB, not sure. Either way, that’s a pretty iffy DL room, so I’d say we need 2 more DL this class and it would be nice to land some elite guys there.

Edge is even worse, but no one’s doubting we need numbers there.

Some of these guys who we think are off the ball backers might be viewed as EDGE/OLB by the staff

The Vegas guy. One of the guys from Bama and Louisiana can be a strong side DE.

It'll be interesting to hear our 9.95er updates on guys that visited other schools. Fong thinks LSU leads for Banks (already covered here), Aggy thinks they're back at the top for Bryce, Allen visiting Bama, etc etc. I'm sure there will be a lot of noise. Some real, some not (I mean how often is a kid going to tell that school's reporters his visit wasn't good enough).

Five-star Kelvin Banks goes in-depth on Brad Davis, LSU visit

Billy Embody

"While new offensive line coach Brad Davis couldn't meet with Banks, the five-star lineman knew him from the past when he was at Arkansas and likes the hire Ed Orgeron made."

Five-star Kelvin Banks goes in-depth on Brad Davis, LSU visit

Billy Embody

2022 Humble (Tex.) Summer Creek offensive tackle Kelvin Banks spent the weekend with his family in Baton Rouge and LSU set the bar high for future official visits, which will include Oklahoma State, Oregon, Texas and Texas A&M this month.

"It went good, it went good. Everything that they showed me like the academic center answered all my questions and everything, the staff is great, everything," Banks told Geaux247. "It felt like a place I could be in the future. Just the staff for sure, they were pretty cool people. Coach O, he's a cool, genuine person. When you get there, he'll be like your second father.

"Some people just say it, but literally, everything that we did. We went out to eat. The photo shoot, everything that went on, it felt like I wanted to be there in the future."

"He's a cool person," Banks said. "In the past when he was recruiting me, he was a real nice guy. He's cool, he cracks jokes when it's time to go and everything. He's a real cool guy. He always talks about my athleticism when I'm pulling so he talks about that a lot. My mind of the game of what to do and when to do it inside the lines."

LSU had a crew of commitments on campus for the weekend including fellow five-star prospects Will Campbell and Walker Howard. The pair have long been in talks with the 6-5, 300-pounder to join the class for a while.

"Will, Walker, all them," Banks explained. "They were really pushing me to go ahead and commit, but I kept telling them there I have to wait it out. I've been talking to them for a while now and they're kind of growing on me."

Overall, LSU made a big push in his recruitment. While the Aggies hold the 247Sports Crystal Ball edge, LSU impressed in a big way.

"The visit, it did a lot because I came to LSU a long time ago when I was little, but they wasn't like it is now," he said. "It did a lot. It showed me a lot that I need to see. It does set the expectations high as well for other schools because LSU did a great job of hosting me."

On his future visits, he's looking for the same love and attention he felt from LSU.

"The same stuff. Making sure that it's genuine people in their program and then I'll go from there and make the decision before the season. Just want to make sure I'm making the right decision for me."

The industry-generated 247Sports Composite ranks Banks as the No. 25 overall prospect in the nation, No. 3 offensive tackle in the country and No. 6 prospect in Texas.

The big Uglies are where for about the past decade or so we have ALWAYS had a need!  Big interior DL, take all you can.  I love edge specialists, but if you can develop a little depth you need a place to put the kids that simply gain a ton of muscle in the weight room.  So on the D side of the ball I think you can create some kids to fill the outside line positions a lot easier than creating monsters to fill the middle.   Same thing on the Offensive side of the ball,  just get warm bodies with potential. The better the potential the better, and in a dream world we start having it become nearly impossible for a freshman to get much more than fill in time.  I know... I know... But I can dream!!!

I think perhaps Herman's biggest mistake was not re-recruiting hard many of the big bodies that left us when he joined.  Nice as shit to see us getting some guys that look to be potential difference makers visiting campus.  We simply cannot get enough big guys (that are fit) at this point, eerrrrrbody!
