Maybe like 20 years ago I was definitely the asshole who would hit the jukebox at casino for an amazing rendition of pulp's common people as performed by one william shatner.

regulars and staff were pretty unimpressed by that move but I felt that if it was there on the jukebox, it was fair fucking game, and I felt like it fit the vibe of the place perfectly

If you ever went to Showdown and played Me and Bobby McGee between 93-2004 I was one of the many people cursing you as it came on.

As usual, the cycle goes:

Politician while campaigning: I am going to do XYZ

voters: Okay, I don’t like that. You probably won’t though, you’ll change once you get elected

Politician once elected: does XYZ

voters:

This. If Travis County voters wanted something different, they would have voted for it. Take Harris County as an example. Kim Ogg was an ineffective hack who had destroyed the morale in the DA’s office with politically motivated BS. Harris County voters said enough of this bullshit and primaried her. Travis County voters had an opportunity to make a change and they voted for the guy knowing exactly what his track record was.

The average Travis County voter has the same intelligence as a toddler.  Would you like these 4 quarters, or a single $20 bill?  4 quarters it is!

There is no critical thinking, they vote how community leadership tells them to vote.  The only reason Jeremy Stylestine didn't win is because someone started spreading the message that Elon was backing him financially.  And Betts lost because he was running under the R. label.  Betts is probably more liberal than Garza, but doesn't have the DNC's hand wrist deep up his ass.

The "voters would have chosen X" argument is such BS, as most are extremely uneducated and are voting for one of two letters.

I've said it before, team politics is fucking America. Dipshits are voting for dipshits over the most stupid fucking issues.

Freaking truth there!  I'm dreading the cap and stitch nightmare that's going to likely go to vote, and will be a gigantic property tax increase to cover the cost.  Again, renters that think they don't have any skin in the game approving things like this, then getting up in arms when their rent skyrockets.  It's like they failed Econ 101 in high school.

You can flip this by bitching about the 10s of millions of fucking idiots who are now defending tariffs and how it's good for 'merica. Dipshits are fucking dipshits. They are the downfall of America, whether at the local or national level.

Cap and stitch would be awesome. Look no further than Klyde Warren Park in Dallas for what an incredible community amenity it would be. Imagine reclaiming the space between DKR, Moody, McCombs and the Disch and having a unified athletics district. It would also be incredible through the middle of downtown to reclaim what is currently dead space and a magnet for crime and homelessness.

Anyone questioning cap and stitch seriously needs to go visit Dallas and see what they did with Klyde Warren. Unfortunately for Austin, a significant portion of that project was funded through private donations and Austin just doesn’t have that kind of history of philanthropy in the community. The Dells can only be expected to do so much. The only section I could see attracting private money is the section through campus.

In theory, they would be awesome, I don't doubt it.  But in reality, we don't have the money as the tax base is being bled dry already for all the other bond initiatives, and not to mention they'd be overrun by homeless camps in no time.  And frankly, more artifical greenspace just equals more watering and maintenance, and once again, we can't even maintain the basic core infrastructure of the city, so why build new when the current stuff is falling into disrepair?

Unfortunately, the it looks there will only ever be two caps (at 4th and 11th).  TxDot has to know now where Austin wants the caps to put the support infrastructure in when the freeway is lowered.  If they don't do it now, it can be done easily (or possibly at all) in the future once the new freeway is complete.

UT would benefit tremendously from the caps - campus can only grow east.  Sadly, it probably won't happen.

Somehow or another Dallas has done it, kept it green and managed to not have it turn into some sort of dystopian homeless encampment so it can be done. It will only get more expensive to complete a generational project like cap and stitch so count on Austin to not have the foresight to do it now and then realize twenty years from now that having a gigantic freeway canyon ripping right through the middle of the central city isn’t great.

Yep, a wasted opportunity.

I don't know... UT can probably find a way to raise the money.  Maybe.  Hopefully.  Any other projects save for the two they're approving are dead.

I think that's the better pill to swallow there.  If UT is benefitting from the cap and stitch to that extent, they should be able to find a way to get it done.  Texas has the funds, and are much better stewards of their funds than the City of Austin.

The money raising has to be done very soon though, like now, as TexDot is working on 35. They have to put the support infrastructure in place.

Garza's going to put a hit out on Plohetski if one's not already in the works.

Pretty easy sell given that the guy would be out of the cage within 48 hours.

Garza trying to find out how to order a hit would be very similar to the guys in Office Space trying to find how to launder money.

The regents approved $106 million to cover the cost of UT's caps in December 2024.
It will create about 17 acres of new land for UT between 15th and Dean Keaton.

The upper deck is going away.  The northbound and southbound access roads are moving over close to the Disch-Falk parking garage, about where the northbound IH-35 access road is today.  UT will have new surface land where the highway is now and the highway will be below the new surface area.

I had no idea - great. Nice to see some forward thinking on this.

$1.4B to complete the Austin caps. $50M annually to maintain them. City of Dallas only contributed $20M, the rest was donations. Fuck that shit for Austin.

This cap space in theory is cool but it’s going to end up costing a few billion more than the “projections” exactly like Project Connect.

Ain't nothing wrong with the Janis version.

Showdown was my Cheers and it was played a minimum of 1 time per night. On weekends nights/days it was played in HEAVY rotation all damn day/night.

I love the song, but had a cringe response for a number of years after.

How much extra space does this give UT to do some rework of the baseball/softball complex for potential upgrades/new stadiums?

not much.  The extra land is going to be where the highway is now, and I think the cap will support up to a two story building, but not more than that.  The post about IM fields is about right.  It could be fields, or parking for Moody or the LBJ library, or planted with trees for tailgating space.  Think about things that are currently near the highway that are not buildings, that could be moved to this space.  Then repurpose those areas with new buildings.

Mostly this will be removing a barrier between the main campus and everything east of 35.  So instead of having to cross at the Manor bridge with lots of traffic above and below, a student might ride a bike across a peaceful area from their dorm east of 35 to campus.  They will still have to cross the access roads, which will be maybe 6 lanes wide, but these will be new crossings with good facilities for pedestrians and bikers.

For baseball and softball, I think UT should work with the city to make Comal closable on game days, between MLK and the road around Disch-Falk.  Maybe brick it like speedway.  Move the road around D-F a bit north towards the tennis center, which would give them space to do something in the outfield.

There is space east of the baseball field between 20th and MLK.  Something will eventually go there.  At one point I heard they were considering a beach volleyball stadium for that area, but I can't find a source for that.

Softball could grow to the east, or even remove 20th street and grow to the south.

BTW, one more thing on Disch-Falk renovations ... here is a side-by-side same scale map of Disch-Falk and Wrigley.
Obviously Texas will never need as many seats as the Cubs but you can see what is possible in almost the same footprint.
