Sam Houston State - The home for wayward longhorns.

Only current wayward Longhorn on the roster is B.J. Foster (what a sad trajectory for Foster): https://gobearkats.com/sports/football/roster

Maybe the Bearkats will get some more from the 40 Acres in the next few months.

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't. They seem to really want to preserve the high school/college experience for Arch, that means going to prom etc. They may even prefer a redshirt year so he can acclimate, and if that is the case, then coming in over the summer would almost assure that.

Arch also plays on the basketball team and even though he is not a hoops star, there is no reason for him not to enjoy his senior season.

No school is going to move someone ahead of Arch because he didn’t arrive in spring, especially with the one-time transfer.

He’ll be fine. I hope that he is fine in Austin and brings a mess o’ top recruits with him. 🙏

Last I checked he wasn't being recruited as a 5* basketball player. He'll enroll early.

so when do the coaches start meeting with the players on their future with the program? i assume we should start seeing a bunch of names in the transfer portal soon?

Sarkisian said Saturday the meetings would be this week and he would meet with each player. I don't know what your definition of "a bunch of names" is. Personally, I would set the # of guys entering the portal this week at something like 5 or 6. Might see 1 or 2 more after graduation next month since graduate transfers can wait a bit longer.

So they need seven guys to leave to get to 85? Plus additional spots to add more transfers.

I believe we are at the hard cap of 33, so adding other players forces us to start having some freshmen enroll in January to count toward 2023.

Umm, not really. For 2022, we are allowed to sign 25 plus up to 7 more to make up for portal attrition. We supposedly had two counters from 2021 that could be used by early enrollees. We could also theoretically grayshirt a couple guys (they'd be ineligible to practice in 2022, and would count against our 2023 limit). Or we could ask the K/LS if they would be willing to walk on.

All of that to say we could have 37 or 38 signees for 2022. We probably end up closer to 34.

We also have a limit of 85 total players. Last year, Super Seniors on a CoVid year didn't count towards that cap. That's expected to happen again this year. So we'd have 88 spots available, and need 4 spots of attrition. They'd need to be at that number by the start of enrollment in June. We might get 1 or 2 medical retirements, which also don't count against the limit.

From a poster on IT:

This is what the Texas Roster currently is set to look like for the 2022 season as of the end of Spring Practice on 4/23/22.

Spoiler: How to Read the Chart

Players are grouped by their original signing class, i.e. their true freshman season. This features every possible player who could have potentially been on this roster if they had stayed at Texas to exhaust all of their eligibility. Hence, transfers, early departures, and medical retirements all are listed if they could have possibly still been on the team next year and their names are in light gray.

All Currently committed recruits are included as well, new transfers are in Bold, Players yet to officially enroll are in Italics.

YC = Years in College as of 2022 RS/CV = RedShirt/CoVid years used ER = years of Eligibility Remaining after 2022

For Example, Keondre Coburn signed in the 2018 class, so 2022 will be his 5th Year on Campus (YC). He redshirted for 1 year (RS) and gets 1 Covid year (CV) meaning that he will be using his 3rd year of eligibility and will have 1 year left (ER) after the 2022 season.

texas-roster-png.193296

Walk ons:

texas-roster-wos-png.193297

**This presumes Ishamael Ibraheem (still listed on roster) returns to the team, and the 3 specialists (Stone, Pearson, St. Louis) all maintain scholarships.

Total Scholarship Players for 2022 = 91
New 2022 Players =33

A minimum of 6 players must transfer to get down to a scholarship number of 85.
In order to get to 36 new players, 3 more players could be brought in so we can expect as many as *9 players to transfer out*.

Assuming Ochaun Mathis joins the team, that puts Texas at 92 scholarships and 34 new players. So at least 7 would have to transfer and they could only bring in 2 more players based on the numbers Sark has mentioned in his Press Conferences.

If I've made any mistakes, in grouping players or counting scholarships or redshirt years, please let me know so I can fix it. I do plan to keep this as updated as possible throughout the offseason to keep track of all the movement we expect to see on the roster this year.

4/? - Who enters the Portal?

@RGBIII this may help you with that request you had.

You know there’s all sorts of extra spots coming up with the XFL. Then there’s the USFL and CFL. Who knows, maybe NFL Europe.

Article on Transfers so far for 2022

Program-changers? There's a lot to love about Texas' 2022 transfer class

ByCLINT BREWSTER Apr 25, 12:54 PM

It was obvious during Texas' 5-7 campaign in 2021 that head coach coach Steve Sarkisian needed immediate help at several positions. With scores of elite players in the transfer portal and immediately eligible, Sarkisian did just that.

Texas' class currently sits at No. 8 in the 247Sports Transfer Portal Rankings with one 5-star, three 4-stars, and one 3-star in the fold. Texas still has its eye on TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis, as well, who has a 92 rating and is down to the Longhorns and Nebraska.

Regardless of what happens with Mathis, Texas' transfer class is something to behold. The Longhorns of course added the No. 2 overall transfer in Quinn Ewers and made a big splash in getting Wyoming wideout Isaiah Neyor, and two former Alabama pass-catchers in Jahleel Billingsley and Agiye Hall. Former Ohio State cornerback Ryan Watts heads back to the Lone Star State as well and is projected to win one of the starting cornerback jobs.

Let's take a look at what makes these new additions special.

QUINN EWERS, QUARTERBACK (FROM OHIO STATE)

Blessed with all-world arm talent and passing ability, Ewers was the second ranked quarterback in the transfer portal rankings behind Caleb Williams. Ewers has undeniable talent and can make all the fundamentally atypical throws with ease. He has a ton of pressure to perform in Year 1 at Texas and if he's able to diagnose consistently and make precise passes, there's a great chance he will have success at Texas in the high-powered Sarkisian offense. He had some expected "freshman" moments in Texas' spring scrimmage (don't forget that Ewers was originally a class of 2022 prospect) but also delivered a deep ball to Isaiah Neyor that had Texas fans salivating.

Ewers has a 100 overall grade as the second ranked transfer portal player in the 2022 cycle.

Back when he was in high school, Ewers wowed fans at The Elite 11 camp where he made tough throws look casual. After studying the Elite 11 since its inception, there isn't a player that made the event look so easy from a pure throwing perspective.

JAHLEEL BILLINGSLEY, TIGHT END (FROM ALABAMA)

Former Alabama tight end Jahleel Billingsley spent three seasons in Tuscaloosa under Nick Saban and at times looked like a huge offensive weapon for the Tide. He was able to make plays lining up both out wide and in the slot with his athletic ability and size at the tight end position. Billingsley caught 38 passes for 559 yards and six touchdowns in his career at Alabama, with the 2020 season being his best, and made some crucial catches in big time moments.

That said, Billingsley was also reportedly in Saban's "doghouse" and looked like he struggled to pick up the offense at times, with his 2021 season being a major disappointment in both playing time and production. A year ago, you would have thought Billingsley would be preparing for the 2022 NFL Draft. Instead, he needed to hit the portal to resurrect his stock.

As you can see here, Billingsley has unique versatility as a pass-catcher when he's detached from the offensive line in the slot or out wide. His length and athleticism allow him to make plays against smaller defenders and he has an outstanding catch radius. Billingsley could be an impact player at Texas with his ability and familiarity of head coach Steve Sarkisian's scheme.  Billingsley had a nice catch-and-run in the Texas spring scrimmage.

ISAIAH NEYOR, WIDE RECEIVER (FROM WYOMING)

The Longhorns offense added another outside vertical threat to compliment Xavier Worthy when it received a commitment from Wyoming's Isaiah Neyor. The third-ranked receiver in the portal rankings, Neyor has a 93 overall grade. He's a proven outside receiver with deep speed and vertical-catch ability. Neyor had 44 catches for 878 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2021, which came with a 20 yard average per catch.

Neyor does a great job on high-point throws and finishes contested catches. At 6-foot-3, 210-pounds he has the ability to catch the ball in traffic and out-body defenders. On deep passes he's able to get on top and track the ball like a center fielder. Neyor should have plenty of opportunities to get open downfield opposite of Xavier Worthy and make big plays. Neyor should be extremely excited at the possibilities when you pair his downfield ability with Ewers' arm and that was on display over the weekend in Austin.

AGIYE HALL, WIDE RECEIVER (FROM ALABAMA)

Agiye Hall went to Alabama as part of the 2021 class and right away made a splash as an early enrollee in the spring game. He brings a lot of juice to the receiver position with his ability to make acrobatic vertical grabs and yards after the catch. Hall has the exciting raw traits that could make him a special player down the road and can break a game open thanks to his size, strength, and explosiveness. He was the No. 7 ranked receiver in the 2021 class and the No. 62 overall prospect.

Last season, Alabama head coach Nick Saban called Hall "one of the most explosive players on this team" and he certainly showed glimpses of what he can do, though Saban was let down by the performance of Hall and Alabama's other young freshmen receivers when pressed into duty in the title game. Hall caught four passes for 72 as freshman in 2021 and it was apparent he needed time to get comfortable with the college game and refine his route running. If Hall can put it all together at Texas (there are documented off-field concerns), he can be a game-changer for Texas' offense. Hall has a 90 overall grade in the portal rankings.

RYAN WATTS, DEFENSIVE BACK (FROM OHIO STATE)

One of the top-rated cornerbacks in the country coming out of Little Elm High in Texas, Watts has elite size at 6-foot-3, and 205 pounds and is a physically advanced cornerback that excels in bump-and-run coverage but also looks proficient in zone coverage. Watts tested with a 4.58 40-yard-dash and a 38-inch vertical coming out of high school. He made 247Sports' list of players that could be in for a breakout season in 2022 and reports say he had a great spring for the Longhorns as he returns back to his home state.

Watts showed excellent positioning and instinctual qualities as a defender at Ohio State and collected two interceptions in 2021, which tied for the team lead. He played in 19 games for Ohio State across the 2020 and 2021 seasons, started the '21 opener against Minnesota. Texas needs to rebuild its secondary and will appreciate Watts' veteran influence as he should be a key leader and bring much-needed toughness to the group.

Hookfin will be a medical DQ.

From FCB...

Isaiah Hookfin will finish his career as a Longhorn on a medical scholarship for the 2022 season after suffering major injuries in a December motorcycle accident.

On Dec. 2, Hookfin posted on social media that he suffered eight fractured ribs, a broken collar bone, a broken forearm and a lacerated spleen in a motorcycle accident.

Hookfin didn’t go through Texas’ recently-completed 15 spring practices.

Hookfin flipped his commitment from Baylor to Texas and arrived in Austin in 2019 as a four-star recruit who was ranked as the nation’s No. 250 prospect and No. 21-ranked offensive tackle in the 247Sports Composite. He played in two games at Texas — the Longhorns’ season-opening rout of UTEP in 2020 and in a 58-0 shutout of Rice in 2021.

If Hookfin indeed goes on a medical scholarship, as we’re hearing, that would leave Texas with 16 scholarship offensive linemen for 2022 (as of right now), including the six true freshmen arriving on campus in June. Sarkisian has said he likes to have at least 16 scholarship offensive linemen but in 2021, Texas had only 14 scholarship offensive linemen on the roster.

Apparently, several are portaling out today, with more likely to come. Are there any of them that we really hate to lose? That's an honest question--yes, we need the roster space, but it's not like we've got talent running out our ears at all positions.

We had a lot of hype on this site over Dixon's Alamo Bowl catch, but I really can't remember him doing much else.

Not that they're portalling just that it's a possibility and we would hate to lose them

Dixon and Harrison had enough time in the program to show if they were going to be good enough to contribute. The 2021 class had a lot of bread thanks to Herman’s staff recruiting like they knew they losing their jobs. I imagine a lot of that class will eventually be attrition.
