Regardless, the Big 10 won't add two more schools.  We may be stopping at 20 and they are going to leave open a spot for Notre Dame guaranteed.

If ND asks for Stanford to be the 20th team, for versatility of their own scheduling, I’d think the big would do it. Would help with the other west coast schools as well.

thereby leaving the sec to pick 4 from the acc, in theory.

The acc remainder would just be out there though. Some would go b12 to make 20 there as well.

20 is a decent number, especially if the geography fits, as football can go 4 pods of 5 that plays the 4 mates every season and one other pod rotating so you see every team every 3 years and host them every 6.

Interestingly, the Big 12 is as urban, culturally and ethnically diverse as it is rural - DFW, Houston, Cincinnati, Phoenix, Orlando…

The Big 12 would be dumb to add Stanford and Cal.  They are difficult to deal with and bring very little to the party besides academics.  They are terrible cultural fits and would make everything more difficult.

At this point the Big 12 should be waiting to see what happens with the ACC, prepared to scoop up any great assets that don't get invited to the Big 10 or SEC.  Why add Cal or Stanford when you could potentially add UNC, Virginia Tech, Miami and Pitt down the road?  Or Virginia. Or Duke. Or Louisville. Or possibly even FSU or Clemson if they get lucky.

I think it’s all but guaranteed that the Big 12 will be able to add Pitt, Ville, and VA Tech in the future, and they’re all pretty great fits that each bring some excellent rivalries back into the league.

I'm pretty sure Texas could wrangle a PAC invite now if they wanted to.

I don't think that Florida fans, or those of any other university in the SEC, feel deep comradery for other SEC schools.  I can't imagine, as a fan, traveling to another school and thinking "Ah, these are my people!"   Nope, I'm here to have a good time, see a great game in a cool environment.  If you need that sense of belonging I'd suggest crossfit.

That said, if you want to compare atmospheres in the SEC vs Big10, that seems like a way to go.  But the idea of having your, or your university's, credibility burnished or tarnished based on athletic opponents seem very myopic.  I feel like Delany during his time at Ohio St. was the one really pushing this narrative as a salve to soothe their losses, which as a Florida fan was quite funny.

I think that's on the table, but it just depends on how things fall.  If the ACC loses ND, FSU, Clemson, UNC, and UVA, the other 10 full members could decide to stick together - like the Irate8 did.  They'd have a pretty good roster:  VT, Miami, Pitt, Lville, NC State, GT, etc.  Decent to good (but not elite) football.  Elite brand names in men's basketball.

The entire CFB system is kind of fucked in a decentralized way if you think about it.

The NFL is one business that can set the same rules and fair schedules for everyone, divide revenue between the teams and set up a real playoff.

CFB is currently 65 different businesses in the P5 ( soon to be P4), each having their own direction.

It would be so much better if there was one entity that could balance everything such as schedules, travel etc. Take 48-60 teams, create 4 divisions by region and you only play in your region. Regional divisions would drastically cut down on travel costs. Then add a real playoff setup and none of this invitation bullshit, or bs pansy ass powder puff OOC scheduling and lets-play-a-high-school-team-in-November crap.

It would be ironic if in the future a mega conference(s) eventually broke up into regional pods that was similar in what I am describing above.

I let it go the first few times you said this but UNC is NOT joining the Big 12. The SEC/B1G will have a knife fight over who gets the Tar Heels. Virginia is nearly in the same boat. The ONLY way they could get FSU is if they take them while their GOR is still tied up in the courts. Clemson is likely the best the Big 12 could get and that is still a very long shot.

Miami, Georgia Tech, Duke, NC State, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Pitt, Syracuse, Boston College, and Wake Forest are all realistic Big 12 candidates (not that they’d want all of them)

ND, UNC, UVA, FSU, Clemson are not.

That is the future and the logical next step for the eternal realignment. The splitting off by the top teams in the mega conferences will be a way to trim the fat.

I wonder if the sec cares if they were to have Kentucky, North Carolina, and Duke basketball under the umbrella.

It was rumored the SEC was looking at adding UNC/Duke before they took aggy.

Seriously though, if the power conferences are eventually moving away from the NCAA in full, which also means the tournament, adding UNC/Duke and maybe even Kansas could be very beneficial for the conference, whose biggest weakness has been basketball.

That also the same reason the Big 12 is focusing so heavily on basketball. They hope by having the hands down undisputedly BEST basketball league with Kansas, Gonzaga, UConn, Arizona, and maybe Duke that they would at least be able to join the B1G/SEC in the event of a full divorce from the NCAA.

When you look at the big picture through that point of view, the BY’s vision for the Big12 and that he is STILL pushing for UConn and Gonzaga to join as #17-18 doesn’t look as crazy as it sounds.

What they don't mention in that article is that the season they announced, they were getting hit by the S-E-C, S-E-C chant in every SWC stadium.  They went 1-7 in conference and only beat just back from the dead SMU.

On its current path you don't even have to go that far. We're looking at less than 20 teams that really matter. Everything else is window dressing.

I would add FSU to make sure I had a stranglehold on Florida.

Kick Missouri out so you can stay at 16.

Top 5 targets for SEC moving forward IMO

1. Notre Dame

2. UNC

3. Florida State

4. UVA

5. Clemson

Well we won't have to play Oklahoma St.!!!

One thing you won't like is that they don't protect players.  Late hits and cheap shots are often ignored.  Targeting will still be a crap shoot.  They never call holding on running plays, but do sometimes call it on pass plays.
