The Boat Fanatic Thread

Recommended Posts

We've been in the southern Exumas and Raggeds (part of Bahamas that's remote and just 60mi north of Cuba) for the last month.

The calm before the storm. This was a fun front to come through as it happened just after sunrise. The winds were calm and quiet and then suddenly the monohull's wind generator starts making a loud weezing sound is it spins up. One by one the boats spun around 120 degrees as the wind went from nada to 15-20kts.

Here's a picture for your monohull lovers @G650 @Sbbruin @troph. We took a friends Leopard 48 out fishing and fuel and this machine was docked. I can't find anything about it online but it was ~60ft and looks fast as hell. The color doesn't come through in these photos but it was olive green that looked amazing. No crew around otherwise I'd have gotten myself onboard for more pics.

I don’t think we will end on a mono hull. Most of it’s gonna end up being boat porn.  It’s gonna be a cat I’m almost certain. But I’ll keep dreaming. That Kinetic 54 is still whispering sweet nothings in my ear that I’m sure.

Very nice. Link worked for me. Lagoon 76. A mere $4.6 million. But I do like the fold out swim platform for the main cabin.

Just trying out my new Aran cable knit sweater on board so I can feel more like a crusty old sea captain. Now about to add some Johnnie Walker Blue Label to the equation.

The 76 lagoon and the monster cats are a sight to be hold for living aboard. Shit you could make a home office, gym (not heavy with weights or too much equipment, guest room, and on and on. Basically a full size apt on water. Just nuts. Truth is though no one comes to visit so one guest room and enough saloon and deck space for two and go. That kinetic 54 is where my head is at now. Well t-minus 3 weeks till tahiti and a tall ship then t-2 months til a 50 foot Fontaine Pajot in the BVIs again.  I’m gonna have boat pron coming out my ears this spring. Giddy up.

Smooth Move, 74 foot Spencer I got to fish 3 days this week, gorgeous boat if you ignore the red hull and fast. Easy cruise at 35 knots and fast cruise at 42 knots which we were doing in the video. I think it tops out at 48. Mezzanine seating has air conditioning blowing out of the backrests. I think I could get used to it. It’s on the market for about 8 million.

Surly Armada, short question from an idiot novice.

I have recently come into ownership of an Ott Yacht International 806. It is exactly the model below and it is immaculately maintained. And I mean immaculate.

Along with the boat, I have 27 years remaining on a 30-year lease on a mooring buoy owned by the Bavarian Government on a very nice lake outside of Munich. These leases are virtually impossible to secure anymore, so it is a really, really unique opportunity for me to take advantage of.

But there is a minor problem that stands in my way of enjoying this vessel...I have no idea how to sail. And i don't know fuck all about what it takes to learn to sail.

So my question for you learned men of Boats-N-Hoes: Is it possible for me to learn on this boat, or do I need to start off with a smaller, basic sailboat while I put this one away for a couple of years while I build up my skills? Or could this work for a beginner? I am a complete novice and don't want to bite off more than I can chew here.

So, outside of getting a cool forearm tattoo and banging prostitutes in various ports of call, any ideas how best to become a sailor of this fine vessel?

You could learn on it, yes. But I’d recommend 2 weeks of a basic keelboat and basic cruising classes / certifications. Your lake probably has a few instructors/sailing businesses to choose from. After those two weeks you would have a foundation of theory and supervised experience that would at least allow you to sail on your own in optimal conditions.

I did this and was sailing a 45 foot cat on my own in the Caribbean in less than a year.

You’re going to want a partner too. Sailing solo is somewhere between annoying and impossible depending on the boat.

That's a badass boat. You don't need a starter boat as that is the perfect size to learn on. You just need the equivalent of a basic keelboat course which takes just a few days. The local authorities might say otherwise however but in the US no courses are required.

Sailing is the easy part of sailboat ownership btw.  The difficult parts are maintenance. Things like "why does the deck feel squishy when I walk on it" or "the keel bolts look really rusty".

@Shady Ray Viking and I are saying the same thing.  that keel boat course I think is something like 16 hours of on the water instruction and some work book/reading type work as well with a test after.  At least the ASA 101 was like that.  and viking is right, Germany might have specific regulations for sailing, the US does not for what you are trying to do.  I would go one step up though and get the basic cruising as it will cover MOB in more depth, anchoring which isn't even covered in the 101s (ASA at least). Also, 101 won't cover electronics either (radio, chartplotters, etc.) so you'll want that too if you have any desire to do more than sight sailing on the lake.  the cruising course likely will go beyond your needed knowledge for lake sailing but I do think it would be great to do as some subjects are pretty important and not covered in the basic keelboat class.

Y'all kick ass. Thanks a lot for the info. I feel so much better now. This has been stressing me out a bit. Plan is to do nothing more than site sailing during the day, so the keel boat course would probably be enough, but I am going to go ahead and take the next step up as y'all recommended. It won't hurt. I just checked and they offer both courses out there.

I made a promise to myself when 2022 came that I would slow down at work, start taking more time for myself and pick up a true hobby that would let me check out from the grind a bit more. I am pretty well-set in my job and I am content to stay here until I retire in 20 years or so, but I need to start moving in a more balanced direction or I am going to keel over dead by 45. I was thinking a few rounds of golf per month or some nice mountain hikes...but not a fucking boat.

But it was my father-in-laws, who even by German standards is insanely anal and he has kept it in great shape. He is late 70s now and just can't do it anymore. We were watching a soccer match last week with the in-laws. When halftime came he said that he wanted to get rid of it and had a call from a guy at the Marina wanting to buy it and they were discussing price. His routine has always been: Pay the one marina on the lake to take it out at the end of the season in September, and then haul it to the foothills of the Alps to a huge barn owned by a nice Bavarian farmer, store it there for the winter, bring it back down in early May, have the marina put it back in, and sail all summer. Rinse, repeat since 1974...a few years later my wife came along and she essentially grew up swimming and sailing from that buoy.

But the entire set up is awesome and can't be replicated. The marina is packed to capacity with typical Munich types, so getting a place there is a huge pain and would take years. The waiting list on getting a buoy lease at the moment is 17 years long as per the Bavarian state website. Since it is one of the 250 owned by the state, the annual lease fee is just $300. The private ones are thousands annually. The access to the mooring buoy would typically require one to put in a dinghy at the marina, and then row along the shore for quite a ways until you reach the buoys. But the in-laws have a long-standing relationship with the private landowner who owns the lake front property right in front in which they get access to walk through his land, and use of his storage shed for their dinghy and paddles and supplies, in exchange for an annual payment of a nice bottle of Pear Schnapps and a late-fall grilling session at his bier bench table where they bring the meat and they all socialize for a while. The storage at the farmer's (huge) building is $250 euros per season, and is again based on a long-standing personal relationship that I could never replicate on my own. In short, it is a bunch of older, OG Bavarians who have been doing this shit with each other based on generational relationships and not for monetary gain. Just a little booze money for the spare space in the barn or the use of the shed and access.

When he told me he was selling it my heart sank. I rarely go out there, as they go during the weekdays and I work a lot, but the idea of it always being there was comforting. But then I heard my wife's voice whisper, "Oh, papa. Bitte nicht." and I looked over and saw her eyes welled up. We are childless and she is struggling with that inevitability right now, and this was just too much for her. I knew at that moment that I was absolutely and completely fucked and sure enough, seven days later I had bought the damned thing. But what felt like obligation is now a lot of excitement and I am ready for it to get warm.

Anyway, probably a bit more info than was warranted, but there's a lot going on at the moment and you anonymous internet strangers got to hear it.

So that said, I do have him around to help me understand the maintenance/basics and it will keep it in the family, and my wife is completely in to pick it up with me. I almost feel like this was supposed to happen and now I am both feet in.

Anyway, here's the lake, Starnbergersee about 20 minutes south of Munich:

spacer.png

You can see the marina here and where the boats are in the bottom right is where the buoys are located if the photo would pan out just a touch:

spacer.png

That is fucking rad. The only thing I ask for my one sentence of advice is take me for a sail next time I'm in the area.

That’s incredible you totally made the right move. Stick around this is the best thread on surly. As the newest member of the sailing club, I’ll say there is a mystique about it that I gladly indulge. Not since I dawned my law school alma mater “school of law” T-shirt when I accepted their offer after undergrad, have I felt such an identity as I have with sailing. It’s super rad. And part of it was always thinking how hard it must be. It’s really not hard and the basics are simple geometry and physics. The hardest part is navigating under sail is largely a reactive job where motor boating is proactive. Yes you can be aggressive but you can only play the hand the wind deals to you. But once you’re comfortable in that posture it’s really not that hard. So just get out there take those classes and do it. You’ll love it.

Your best bet is get private instruction on YOUR boat if it's in the budget.  By someone qualified.  Great if you can get certification, but most importantly learn how to sail THAT boat.  And as others have said, great boat to learn on.  How bitchin' all the way around.

Got damn, Troph, this is great stuff. Wish I could pos rep even more. I remember that exact feeling when starting law school, so hits close to home and all that.

I binged a bunch of intro to sailing shit on Youtube last night and woke up so excited that I just said "fuck it"... turned on my out of office reply, loaded up the dog and drove out to the farm this morning just to check it out. Hopped onto a relatively empty A95 autobahn heading south towards Innsbruck at around 6:30 AM and felt excitement that I hadn't felt in a long time. Not sure what I thought I was going to do once I got there outside of walking around the boat with Eli Manning Dumbface, but once I got there I proceeded to, well, errrr, walk around the boat with Eli Manning Dumbface. But it sure was fun.

Anyway, I will sit back and learn as much as possible from this thread...but before doing so, I took a pic... looking forward to posting a bunch more come May:

@Shady Ray things to learn from this thread:

1. @Cajun loves to pick up barely legal ladies on the lake in his nice surf boat ride. The benefit is he posts pics showing off, they are generally much appreciated around here.

2. @Sbbruin likes to brag about his SoCal life and grabbing the mooring balls in Catalina any chance he can get. We all drool over his escapades.

3. @G650 is addicted to speed and carbon fiber, he'll likely end up with the largest yacht of the group when we all retire. I have half a mind to be a stowaway on one of his gulfstream races.

4. @justhookit can't decide if his Costa Rica adventure pics catching marlin on his Bertram belong here or in the fishing thread. He's going to be my first, marlin catch that is. He wants to be in our will, his only ask is our dog.

5. @conVINCEd is on deck with his boat purchase to come. We are trying to get him to spend 3x his budget.

6. @Viking was the first one out the door, he rarely has time to post with all the chillaxing in the Caribbean he does. We all admit he's doing it the right way.

7. @Landomatic bought a yacht, then disappeared. Last he spoke he talked about how it entertained 6, dined 4, and slept 2 as the perfect boat but he was rethinking that for sleeping 3. We've yet to hear how that's turned out.  We suspect quite well.

8. @Brew he's a long term wake/surf/ski boat guy, great resource for all things boats except sail boats.

9. all the fishing guys are here but are underrepresented in pics, they should post more.

10. not sure what these fellas would say about me, but I do swing both ways (I own a surf boat, a sail boat and I charter big boats of all kinds) and live by the motto "how many boats does a gal need? One more than she has."

11. boat pron is always appreciated.  you see boats you like, pics or GTFO.

12. bragging is good, we all want to see someone living their best life on the water.

what else am I missing?

A friend who lives in Florida posted this today.....

My grandkids are dedicated to crew raising.  This is a photo of them practicing after school during a thunderstorm.  My kid is understandably upset with the coach for letting them go out.  Lots of alligators in that lake.

A stolen yacht crashed into a dock and other vessels in Newport Beach on Thursday, March 10, an Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman said, injuring one person and leading to the accused thief’s arrest.

The yacht was stolen from a yacht broker in Newport Harbor at around 10:10 a.m., when a man piloted it erratically and collided with at least two boats, Sheriff’s Department Lt. Ryan Anderson said. Someone in one of them, in a slip, was injured in the collision, but how badly they were hurt was not known.

Video of the collision on TMZ showed the yacht plowing into a dock near Lido Isle, and momentarily pausing on top of the dock and boats.

The yacht also crashed into a sea wall near the Lido Isle bridge, Anderson said. At that point, deputies were able to board the yacht and apprehended the man without incident, he said.

How the man allegedly stole the yacht and what his motive may have been was not immediately known. He had no reported injuries. The whole episode lasted about 10 minutes, Anderson said.

The Sheriff’s Department’s dive team was assessing damage to the stolen yacht and the areas of the harbor it collided with, Anderson said. The stolen yacht did not appear to be sinking, but the dive team was checking for any potential environmental hazards – such as leaking fuel – as of 12:45 p.m., he said.

I got rid of mine.

I am now the guy who gets invited and pays for everything -- fuel, booze, food, cleanup at stack storage -- and still come out way, way ahead.  Often times I split with another guest.  But the boat owner ain't paying for shit when I am on.

I do love a boat.  Just no time now.  I hunt a lot and work a lot.  Once I retire in a few years and am strictly a referral attorney, I will get back into boating.  Center console bay boats are about my speed.

I am sending both kids to sailing camp this summer.  Want them to learn it.  I know enough to be dangerous but eventually want to get proficient.  Nothing like sailing and not hearing an engine.

Even if it doesn’t work out it will be fun trying. We did this one because my Dad was in town. He’s 77 and has only been on the boat a handful of times. I’ll remember fishing with him forever and now I’ve got it on video.

Cross posting because it turned out amazing. Best money I’ve ever spent and it wasn’t that pricy.

Fucking A.  Awesome.  I have a Parrot Anafi drone that I’m still getting the hang of.  Want to dial it up more this summer.

And @Cajun I trust there’s a Capt. Stabbin ending to your boating escapades?
