I was just thinking "this music is fucking perfect."

The songs are good, but they shouldn't be the prime provider of emotional content. That's pretty much the definition of a melodrama.

Great music videos, but that's not why I watch.

The show peaked with season 2. It happens. It's just been a bit of a letdown, not bad, just not as good, so somewhat disappointing. I binged through the first two seasons, but I'll stop after an episode or two now and take my time returning to it.
Agreed. Love the show overall but seasons 1 and 2 are totally different in almost every aspect from seasons 3 and 4. I get it, the show, characters and restaurant has grown since then but I loved the chaos and the raw, gritty aspect of the early seasons.

Finished it today. Some of it was a real beating to watch, but overall I liked it. The Marcus thing (didn't want to spoil it if you haven't seen it) was maybe the best part of the season.

Franchising The Beef

That and in the last scene with Natalie and computer, it showed that they had moved from the black to green so they were turning a small profit. They said it was going to be day to day, but that they were heading in the tight direction.

That was a good ending if it is over.  They left themselves wiggle room in case they can do another season though.  The money issue will be on the way to being fixed as soon as the franchise idea got relayed to everyone.

I thought it was a great season. Season 3 was really bad, but this got the show back to what made it great. And for those saying the show insists on itself, you're not wrong, but it did in the first couple of seasons also and everyone loved it. Not much has changed in that regard.

I watched the first two seasons with everyone else, but skipped the third last summer when I was in the process of moving. After seeing all the comments in this thread about how bad season 3 was, I never watched it. Do I need to watch season 3 to enjoy season 4, or can I just go find a recap of that season and proceed with 4?

There has to be one more wedding.

You can probably get away with a recap. Season 4 had a lot of fantastic callbacks to previous episodes, but I don't think any of them were from season 3.

Honestly, you can just find a good recap that covers the season in chronological order on Youtube and it will get you up to speed. There was more filler in that season more than any other season. We do this a lot for shows we watch in real time with almost a year in between seasons. It helps to refresh on some of the stuff that happened.

It started too slow and meandering/rinse and repeat, but 4.5 onward was nails.  I loved the under the table gimmick frankly because the set kept getting bigger and bigger as more people were under there.  Sure it’s a metaphor, insisting on itself whatever, but I felt it was kinda self aware when the Fak backed up to take the picture.

I actually loved the conceit of the last episode just being those 3 and then Sugar comes out and validates Carmy without words.

Will miss this as I don’t think it’s coming back.  Hopefully not.

Only finished four episodes this season.  I liked 3.  It was stupidly sweet but at least that is something.

With nothing happening the "methody" acting gets tiresome.  Instead of just having a conversation, you have to get the two second "expression shot" before anyone says anything. Syd is the fucking worst.  She has to do "bug eyes"/count to three in response to any communication.  But they all do it.  It's like the director is telling them to stretch out the conversations so they can reach their "minutes" quota.

The “All Syd” episode with the little girl had to be one of the most boring things ever shot for television. Awful.
Just a complete waste of 35-40 odd minutes

While watching that episode with my wife, in the first ten minutes of the episode I said “it’s like she wrote this episode herself or something”……Sure enough my suspicions were confirmed in the credits.

By far the worst episode of the season.

Needs more Mulaney and Pratt, and less Sydney.

Mulaney was fantastic.

I could post the same about a slew of other characters and their chemistry. In bold stripes Ebon Moss-Bachrach absolutely killed it this season. I fucking love Tiff but admittedly, I've been cyber stalking her since Community. Sugar kills all her scenes. I really love this cast, but the chemistry Syd has with other characters is just lackluster, the writing and/or her acting make that character super annoying and if the next season focuses even more on her it might run me off.

In all, I liked this season a lot, but Ayo's performance and Syd did a lot of damage for me. The best part of the Worms episode was the mom and her daughter, they were much more entertaining also:

Spoiler

I don't need 40 fucking minutes of Exposition about something I already knew. If an actor and writers need an entire episode of exposition to a child and her struggles to explain what's going on within the character they suck at their job.

I binged the show from over the weekend, finished Wed. I really liked the season. I consider Seasons 3-4 to have been a part 1, part 2.

Frankly I loved the show as we are starting to see growth from the characters. Syd still needs the most growth, but has her moments. Carm very much is growing as is the mom.

I also loved the little touches, like spotted in the background of a scene.

Glad this show is coming back for a 5th, none of the stories are done yet, except maybe Marcus.

The heck? It's barely gotten through the surface, there is still a long way to go for him. Hell, he isn't even close to done with the Bear yet.

Yeah, I don’t get the hate either. She is the amazing talented character with no self-confidence because once she jumped in the deep end with no help and sank like a rock. She’s exactly what she supposed to be.

And I think Edebiri is playing her to the hilt.

She is text book Mary Sue.

Spoiler

She doesn't have any of the notches on her belt that Luca has, yet now Luca is going to be in HER kitchen.

She's working for what she claims is the best in Carm, yet all she does is bitch and has "surpassed him". She has an episode, an entire fucking episode of shitty acting, writing and exposition, over 2 choices any chef would beg for in LIFE and its a fucking PROBLEM for her. A problem for a fucking noob, that a seasoned pro would KILL to have one option in a career. She is supported consistently by Carm, yes he's difficult, but it fucks her up and she can't deal. News fucking flash, almost all top chefs are a mother fucker to work for and the show makes that point extremely clear.

Spoiler

She is offered Carm's baby and all she does is fucking bitch about it. He admits his errors, has changed his ways, apologizies to her, owns it and.... she doesn't want to listen to him, won't accept what he's saying. Basically, doesn't give a flying fuck about Carm's personal struggles. Oh, yeah, your problems suck and things are looking up, but you can't quit Carm! Fuck your real life issues Carm I dont want this once in a life time opportunity to take over a great existing staff that seems to be humming now.

It's fucking annoying. Her choices as an actor suck. Her writing is way worse.

Suck a worm!

Lol, Syd is the cry baby in this equation.

Spoiler

I still like the show despite her, but have zero interest in a show built around her.

Mark it, she becomes the center piece of the show, it tanks, fast!

Momentary derail...

Ever in Chicago and want to hit some spots related to The Bear Armitage Orange Line L stop was featured several times this season.

Go to that stop and hit:

Marquee Lounge

Absolutely the has the Sheffield area vibe and its right off the L. (Every neighborhood had a bit different vibe. The location where The Bear is located is in River North, my old hood. I recognize spots constantly.)
