you wildly exaggerate how often this happens. i spend 99% of my time on surly on boards that you don't even read.

also, i brought more than just receipts on my QE takes, i brought receipts on the actual personal shit talk that came with it. listen to how much you whine about me bringing that up. now multiply it by 1,000, and you have me experience posting on this thread. you think it’s annoying for one guy to mention “hey you guys talk crazy shit about me for no reason” once every few blue moons? try having the hive mind follow you around religiously attacking you for your football opinions. see how annoying that is.

also, seriously- you have made a gigantic mountain of this molehill. it’s wild that you think you have some sort of moral high ground here. we wouldn’t even still be talking about me if you weren’t dedicating thousands of keystrokes to me and my posts. you act like you hate this but you’re actively giving it life.

I mean good for you for coming here with receipts, but being critical of other posters reacting and responding to it sure is a take. What did you think would happen.

Are you butthurt I said something negative about Dear Leader Orange Jesus the other day? Did that trigger you? Is that why you're melting down like a little snowflake?

True.

However, if Arch leads Texas to a title this year, or if he's even demonstratively better than Quinn was at guiding the offense, I'm not sure the 2024 QB decision once Quinn returned from injury was much of a Sophie's choice. Instead, we'll be adamant that Sark made a mistake.

Arch has a better team around him this year than Ewers had for the last 2 years.  he should win it all.  I mean, we are consensus #1 pre season.  I expect a victory at tOSU.

i referenced the mental health pot shots because they have persisted throughout this thread, including just a couple of days ago. those screenshots are just from like a 10 post stretch of one page of this thread, and i don’t believe i claimed that those specific posts featured any mental health pot shots. what im saying is that those personal:mental health insults have taken place and continue to take place, never because i insulted someone else, always because some poster just doesn’t like me or my take on quinn ewers. i report like one post per year and so far this year it was someone in this thread who went after my mental health a few days ago. i let a lot slide off my back, but that shit gets tiresome. it’s out of bounds, especially when i’m never taking it there with anyone else.

Legit question -- how many posters have actually taken those potshots?  Surely it's a small minority of those who argue with you (as they do others) about sports, etc.?

Ok that’s fair. Maybe I interpreted what you said incorrectly. Regarding the other point…do you have any idea how often I and most posters have been called a retard or worse just for ideas or observations on most of the boards here? It’s not a big deal.  Have you tried posting on places like Reddit or Sec rant? Those places are fucking brutal.

I expect a victory at tOSU but I’d argue that Arch’s receiving corps and rebuilt line are a step down from what Quinn had the last 2 years. Our defense is elite. If our Offense can average at least 24 points a game we should cruise.

we’ve had 25 players from the past two teams drafted, plus other guys who will stick in the league as UDFA’s. if the last two teams had the next two seasons of Arch at qb then Texas would be coming off back to back undefeated seasons right now. QE got waaaaaaay more help than what Arch will have this year. maybe next year Arch has a supporting cast on par with what quinn had, but that would require Tecas to have the best defense i. the country with top 5 skill position players. we’ll see.

Nick Saban had no issues taking out a struggling Hurts, who actually had real success unlike Quinn in the middle of the national championship game and they never looked back. Hurts had to transfer out because his job was lost. Quinn hit his ceiling here and it was painfully obvious we were handcuffed by him and would be the rest of the year.

No idea what message Sark was trying to send Quinn by benching him for a few plays and he comes right back to take over. And then, that message didn't work because he didn't improve a lick after that game. Any pass more than 5 yards down the field left you holding your breath.

This post echoes my thoughts.  I'm a huge Sark fan but I thought he should've replaced Ewers w/ Manning.  He could've protected Ewers draft position (moot point after the fact) by saying the totality of his lingering injuries prevent him from playing at the level needed for Texas to wina championship.

I'm agnostic on whether I personally think Manning should have replaced Ewers. I can see reasonable arguments for and against. What I am not agnostic on is whether or not I think Sark is in a better position to make that decision than I am (or anyone else on this thread). He knows more about football than we do, he knows more about the players than we do, he knows more about the locker room than we do. He's not under any meaningful outside pressure to make a decision that is detrimental to the team as a whole. Sark isn't perfect, but I think he's at least earned a little trust in how he manages his roster and his team culture.

We can speculate all day about why Sark stuck with Ewers, but we won't know. It could be misplaced loyalty or concern about Sark's image as a QB developer, and I can't definitely say it isn't, but it could be a million other real and substantive concerns indicating that Ewers was the better choice. And there's no counterfactual for us to use in order to prove the issue one way or the other - we can't go back in time, have Sark start Manning, then compare how the season went.

To be clear, I'm happy to speculate and I'm happy to talk about Ewers' level of play. But the conversation loses all value when you become dug in to a position and are unwilling to keep in mind what I've just said - we can't know one way or the other what the right choice was, and that reasonable people can have different opinions. Having a different opinion doesn't make the other person malicious, arbitrary, or stupid.

For my bit of speculation, I also am surprised at how few people have mentioned a very basic reason that Sark may have gone with Ewers - coaches play the players they trust, and people tend to trust someone they know well. In other words, not only is Ewers more experienced than Manning, but Sark is has more experience with Ewers. As I've noted several times, Ewers has his flaws but Sark knows those flaws. He can coach around them. That's not just a Sark thing, that's most coaches. Saban going to Tua over Hurts is so remarkable because it was so unusual. I'm just never surprised when a coach goes with a veteran. There usually has to be a compelling reason to switch to the younger guy.

But in the end, Sark couldn't coach around those flaws. Which was no real threat to stretch the field, therefore we constantly threw 5 yards passes. He posed no real threat to take off, and the defense didn't need to key on him. He also has very poor pocket presence. Accuracy anything beyond check downs was wildly inconsistent. So many passes were just floated and his footwork was below average.

All of the above caused us to lose the biggest games we played which were both Georgia games, both semifinals games.

The 1st Georgia game sure.  There were a multitude of plays that were not made in the 2nd Georgia game and the Ohio State game that really hurt us.  To blame that solely on Quinn is just standard retarded football board hot take bullshit.

Couldn't he? The only inarguable fact about Ewers' tenure is that the team made the semifinals twice with him under center. That the team won the Big 12 and made the SEC championship game. Those are good results for a team that went 5-7 and lost to Kansas before Ewers showed up. And I'm not saying that Ewers is the only (or even main) reason those things happened, or that he deserves credit for those outcomes. I'm saying that it's inarguable that those things happened because they did happen as a  matter of fact. However good or bad Ewers was, those results were achieved with him as QB and Sark calling plays. If one's position is that Ewers was bad, then Sark must be an insane playcaller to have gotten what we did out of that offense. All the NFL talent at WR and OL doesn't matter if the QB can't do his job.

And if the point is that Sark couldn't coach around those flaws in the sense that it limited our ceiling to "just" making the CFP semifinals, then we're back to where we started. There is no counterfactual where we can prove that Sark made the wrong call or the right one. Because the question isn't how good was Ewers in an objective sense, but whether Ewers was a better choice than Manning (and I guess Trey Owens). Even with all his flaws (that you've listed out and that I'm accepting as true), if Ewers gave us a better chance to win, then Sark made the right decision and called the best plays he could given who he had at QB.

Perhaps I should have said that having a different opinion doesn't necessarily mean the other person is malicious, arbitrary, or stupid. This thread is pretty good evidence that many people with different opinions are, in fact, unreasonable shitheads.

I think there is a good bet that 80% of the starting 22 for this year Longhorns will get drafted at some point in the next 2-3 seasons. This team is absolutely loaded with talent, the inexperience in there is certain spots. Just get through week one and let the OL and offense gel in weeks 2-5 before we open SEC play at Florida.

Well man, I'm glad you said it first but it needed to be said that 100% of Texas failures since 2005 have absolutely been on the shoulders of VY. You see VY simply set way too high a bar for Texas athletics and in particular the QB position. Had VY not performed to the level he did, Colt getting us to the national championship would have sufficed. Ewers making the playoffs twice would have made us happy.

If VY had just dialed back his abilities, stuck to the GDGD script, played afraid like his HC told him and not gone out and beat every team, this thread would be nothing but compliments of Ewers.

Now look at us. We all want to compete for and win the NC every damn year. Thanks a lot VY.

I know  this will be an unpopular take and I commend you for being the first to bring it up.

This thunder dome of a thread really needs to be in classics.  It's simultaneously the highest peak and lowest valley of Surly, lol.  But, it needs to stay alive for the 2025 season and aftermath at least.  I expect it to pay dividends for quite awhile.  Every time Arch does something jaw dropping, good or bad, we'll get people digging up their receipts and rehashing the coaching decisions at the end of 2024.
