There's obviously some super-negative story/idea/made-up-hatred, true or not, that they keep telling each other and pass down through their underclassmen about Texas.

If we knew what that was, we could refute it to them on social media at the very least.

Yes, the obvious course of action is to try and resolve this misunderstanding through tweeting at recruits.

Which one is a better college OT? That's all I care about.

Ojo needs to learn how to be a good OT and not just a large athletic person. Turntine needs to bulk up a whole lot past his current skinny TE size. Both have tons of potential. Pick your poison.

Kinda funny in this cycle we have a TE the size of a OT, and an OT the size of a TE. Obviously I'll trust Flood's track record of development here/

A HS coach told me that DJ Campbell had this mean streak when he was playing against his team. You could tell he wanted to punish people. He then said Ojo had none of that.

Take that with a grain of salt: Ojo plays on a 1-9 Lake Ridge team, so maybe it's tough to be a killer when you're getting killed.

Yeah, the terminology gets awkward. There's a $20.5 million cap on NIL provided by the schools. There's no cap on third party NIL, but all deals over $600 are supposed to go through a clearinghouse that determines if they're legitimate. If the NIL deal is determined not to be a market rate NIL deal based on an algorithm, the deal is supposed to be blown up.

Right now Texas is deciding on an administrative level to not do booster led NIL deals for the 2026 class. So they're counting on the $15 million or so out of the $20.5 million allotment the school has put forward specifically for football, plus whatever NIL deals the metro area of Austin can produce for local athletes - plus whatever national brands want to get on board - to compensate athletes. Other schools don't seem to be following the same formula, so for the 2026 class other programs appear to have more money to throw at athletes than Texas does. That's a bit of a question, but that's the appearance.

Like I've said multiple times, the ink isn't dry on the House settlement, so we'll have to see how it all works out. But I can say that if Texas abides by this, and other schools choose to add more booster led NIL deals, then Texas isn't going to just have a tough time recruiting in football. They'll have a tough time recruiting in any sport where booster led initiatives are being used to acquire talent. That will become very obvious very quickly. I just don't see how Texas allows that as a long term situation.

But the House settlement is not college sports' final form. Not by a long shot. We are in a phase of complete chaos, where the rules will change regularly, and programs that value winning will have to constantly adapt.

Damn good insight Sir, thank you. This is what many don't understand. Texas isn't playing this new game until we understand it. Shit can involve FBI investigations since it's Federal now and any funds have a $1 that crossed state lines.. Luckily, we have real lawyers and a real law school. Unlike a poor bred school (aggie) we have to give funds to. And my 40 time (not you SLX) - who knows now, I'm just trying to not die - which is harder than some realize. Positive is Texas gets a few million on my death.

I'll take my chances that the 17-year-old with a dad who played DT in the NFL will add weight in college.

We probably need to hit up the portal for a starting top end LT this Winter anyway. If Goosby does what most of us expect him to do that guy is off to the first round of the NFL after this season. You going to trust Manning's blind side in his final season at Texas to Chatman? Brooks? Baker hasn't exactly wowed people so far on campus anyway but is more suited to RT. Not a lot there at LT to inspire confidence though Brooks was getting great reviews at one point from the staff iirc.

If this were a Banks 2.0 situation and either Turntine or Ojo were projectible day one starters then sure maybe you consider going way above market rate. That isn't how people view these two.

Bobby recently said if they were to re-rank our last class based on early returns, Brooks would be #1. I assume he'll start if Goosby leaves.

I'm not overly concerned if we miss on an expensive project like Ojo. Sucks we didn't get Lee though.

Sooo let me get this straight—

We missed out on guys like Lee, Krempin, Roseborough, etc., because  Ojo and Turntine were the ones we keyed on. . . .and now y’all are already trashing Ojo because he’s doing what literally every other recruit is doing and trending away from Texas the day before his commitment?? 😂

What, y’all gonna turn on Turntine too if he flips?

Y’all are hilarious. Just admit we’re losing momentum with legit prospects and hope we can circle back later. SMH.

We wanted Lee and pursued him as such until the very end.

I don't think Texas "missing" on Krempin or Roseborough had much to do with Ojo and Turntine. They liked both and would have taken them for the right price. A&M decided to overpay for both.

Ojo was a turnstile at a high profile event not long ago. That's concerning. Add that he's an "athlete who needs to get good at football," and you have to wonder, so people are wondering. Fair game.

There’s some notion that Lee is a legitimate flip candidate. Guess we’ll see over the next few months.

If Texas misses on Ojo, that at least frees up earmarked money for someone else on the OL (not for other positions).

Whoever referenced Sheppard with Ojo nailed it for me. I want him for signing day noise and if he really embraces the developmental experience and becomes a player down the line, awesome. Is that worth $1M to open? No, it is not.

Good luck with Tech if that is the path they select. The family does recognize there’s a gap in track records for line development between Tech and Texas. Do they realize the gap is Grand Canyon-sequel? Who knows.

I’m still rooting to land the guy, but for the thoughts I espoused and not because he’s some sort of can’t miss prospect.

Also, the guy lost every rep at the Rivals camp a few weeks ago. He’s expected to plummet in the rankings. He’s going to wind up as a mid-level 4 star. The hype he adds to Texas’ class in the end isn’t going to be massive. For Tech, everyone covering it will oversell it through signing day.

Paying millions for developmental players to sit on the bench is a huge stranded cost. The big NIL dollars should be reserved for generational talent that is either A) ready to contribute immediately or B) at a position of scarcity such as DT.

Shepherd absolutely comes to mind with Ojo. That doesn't mean the latter won't pan out, but if you're really not passionate about the game, the odds of NFL success will always be against you. So if he decides to strike while the financial iron is hot and go for max pay up front, it honestly might be his best move. Again, we'll see how it pans out, but I don't think we're talking about a kid who views a football career in the same way as a Banks or Turntine.

Posted (edited)

Ojo will probably be fine, just needs a few years in a proper S&C program and to learn to hone his blocking skills and footwork. Meanwhile, he's sucking up valuable resources that could be put to work immediately on guys like Mosley, Maraad Watson, or even retaining a Goosby or Baker.

Apparently this guy was ass in camps and needs work. The opportunity cost is simply not worth it in instances like this

the best teams are constructed through high school recruiting that portal shit may work for a season, just ask Florida State or Ole Miss.

Playing for Tech would be disappointing.  Losing blows, and getting injured for a team that sucks while getting paid is fine for some. I don't know what Tech's depth is like--may be able to promise starting time or a shorter wait to see the field.  Don't know, don't care.  What we do know is that Tech won't be playing for anything, and plays in a conference that won't be fielding anybody playing for anything. But if being part of a winning culture and demonstrable development is something that matters, then there's a transfer portal available.  So it goes.

Our roster is set for the next 2 years, assuming we keep everyone we want. In the meantime, the house settlement will either be challenged/overturned, or loopholes will be discovered. If it's the latter, I assume we'll partake.. otherwise, just shut it down and focus on olympic sports.

If the market calls for a HS recruit to get paid really high, more than some starters, you better be damned sure he’s going to work out. For comparison, I remember in 2001 (damn, that was a long time ago), Texas signed an OL “Class of Beef”. This was to lay a foundation for a NC OL. These guys were all studs, all offered by several top programs. They were Jonathan Scott (All American, high draft pick, had multi year NFL career that would have been a lot better without a horrific rookie injury), Will Allen (starting G on NC team, no real desire to pursue NFL), Mike Garcia (regular depth piece), Roman Reeves, Terrance Young (backup), William Winston. Texas really wanted to Sign Jami Hightower, but he signed with the Ags, where he was a multi year starter that never made the NFL.

What’s the point? It’s that if you paid market value for a class like that, you would be having uncomfortable conversations with over half of them after one year.

This is a crazy market now.
