Most of the draft pundits are saying this is a weak draft with limited (15 or so) true first-round grades. So if you are a GM then do you take a marginal 1st round pick (especially when 3 or 4 are QBs when you don't need one) or a potential star at RB.

You take the potential star. I would. A difference maker. Especially if you have quite a few picks. I think Detroit will snag him if the Texans don’t. Jmo. Game changer for them. Then with their wealth of picks load up on defense and snag another offensive weapon. That division is wide open with A A Ron as a Jet.

As someone who sees patients in a neurology clinic I can unequivocally say that trying to objectify cognition is a fool's errand. You can very easily interview someone (obtain a clinical history) and determine quite a bit about a persons depths.

Yes. Because a draft prospect would never lie about how good they are at analyzing a playbook. One interview without a test should really clear that up. 🙄

I'm gonna tell you a secret. Patients often lie as well. There are ways of understanding someone's depth without asking them directly. This might be over your head though.

I know that Detroit is on the rise, but their head coach is a sheep fucker of epic proportions.  I don't trust that sorry SOB at all.

Tests are just one component of evaluating a QB. Plenty score high on tests and do fuckall in the NFL. Many talented athletes score low and either flame out or have promising careers. If a QB scores low on the S2 or equivalent as a GM I would want to know more about their work ethic, if they are coachable, the company they keep, understanding of the playbook (get out the whiteboard) and so on…plenty of ways to sus out a person that a GM/owner thinks is a potential franchise QB. The problem is desperate teams reach and so forth. Jmo.

Yes I’m sure you’re a human lie detector that can never be fooled. No way that a test and an interview could be better than your interview. You pompous asshole.

Just because you can do a test, doesn't mean you should. Yes I am smarter than you.

This right here. As bad as a team like the Texans are the holes are almost too many to count. Picking a QB from this class imo isn’t going to move the needle at all. They would be wiser to get the best talent available at other needs and look to next year. There is more than a good chance they will have an opportunity to pick up a good to game changer QB in next years draft they could bring into a more supportive roster. Any QB they take his year should be a guy they take a flyer in later picks that may at least work into a potential backup down the road. The value this year is not there at QB IMO. I could be wrong.

Gerry said today a QB coach he talked to thinks Aidan O'Connell from Purdue will be the best QB in this draft, or maybe the QB guy he was the QB he liked the most.

Yeah, I heard a discussion where one analyst said wouldn't it be funny for Sean Payton to end up with another Purdue QB.

It’s mentioned in the link @LTtxfan posted but Hendon Hooker has the widest range of outcomes. Any team that drafts a player in the 1st round gains the option to add a 5th year to their contract. A team could trade up in to the 1st to pick him just for that reason.  But if he doesn’t go in the 1st, an injured/raw QB without a 5th year option might slide out of the top 2 rounds entirely.

apparently the Texans really want to trade out of the #2 pick but may just say "fuck it" and draft Levis since they need a QB.

The Texans picking the "absolute" right player with their early round picks isn't as critical as just selecting productive players.

Texans needs are so many, they have to end up with at least 7 of their 12 draft picks earning a roster spot for 2023...

Imho, the Texans aren’t really looking for additional draft picks. They have 12 picks this year and 10 in 2024. Unless their plan is to move back a few slots and still get one of the big 3 Dlineman and then use that additional draft capital to move up from #12 to get a QB

there's no such thing as too many picks - you can always leverage them to move up and grab someone you really want.

in other news - even Mel Kiper is saying Bijan doesn't drop out of the top 10 and has him going to Philly.

Rumor time:

  • The Texans won't take a QB at No. 2 overall

  • Tyree Wilson will be drafted over Will Anderson Jr.

  • 2 Iowa tight ends likely to go in 1st round of NFL draft

  • Will Levis' stock is rising

  • Bijan Robinson will be a top 10 pick

  • Jahmyr Gibbs is a first-round pick

  • Trey Lance will be traded during the draft

  • This wide receiver class is first-round overrated

  • Hendon Hooker will be taken higher than expected

Tyree imo is better than will Anderson jr (if you watch the tape.) how in the fuck does SF think they get anything for Lance? He’s proven nothing…I can see a mid level trade maybe with Seattle or Arizona (and that’s all I can think of.) damn

Lance is the epitome of the stupid thought process of NFL people. I could draft a QB on a rookie contract, or I could trade for a former high pick QB later in that rookie contract who hasn't worked out. Well.. the former high pick has EXPERIENCE, so that is more attractive. Never mind the experience is all bad.

Better way to put it than I did. There are still dumb teams but the vast majority are cleaning up their shit/I know some are desperate for a QB but this is a draft for the teams without a franchise one to build a team and then draft one next year. That’s what I would do if I was a GM if a team in need of a QB for the future.

Exactly, next year's draft is going to be sick at QB. Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Quinn Ewers (?), Michael Penix, Bo Nix, JJ McCarthy (?), Jordan Travis. There are going to be some dudes.

I will say the same thing about Levis as I say about Richardson. If either of these guys are taken in the top 10 then those entire front offices need to be fired.

The problem with Young is not height but weight. He’s tiny. Reich polishes QBs so I weirdly think he could draft Levis. His overall track record with QBs is fixing mistakes/he can’t make Young bigger. With Richardson you have to sit him a while. In a perfect world he goes a place where he can sit and learn (Seattle or similar.) the reason the mock drafts are so fucked is because none of these QBs are a slam dunk in any way. The most potent ion is a Hooker or Richardson. That’s jmo but they have to sit and learn a year or two at least. I do think they are worth a 3rd or high 2nd round pick if you have a bunch of picks and I do think both are more capable than Lance has shown. Jmo.

Even analysts all over place on depth in this draft...

2023 NFL Draft: Strongest position group? Weakest?

Lance Zierlein.      NFL Media Draft Analyst

Quote

Looking at the 2023 NFL Draft class, which position group is the strongest? The weakest?

Before we dive into my rankings, it's important for you to understand my criteria. In assessing each position group, I identified star-caliber players, future starters and overall depth. Generally speaking, I concentrated on prospects who are most likely to be drafted in Rounds 1 through 5.

This year's class offers high-end talent across the board, but there are some positions that are particularly deep, including a tight end class that could become one of the best we've seen in a long time. Here is how I stack the position groups, from strongest to weakest.

1) Cornerback

We saw 12 cornerbacks go in the first three rounds last year, including Defensive Rookie of the Year Sauce Gardner. There might not be a Sauce in this year's class, but there appears to be a higher number of players who will be starters in the NFL. In fact, there will be big, long, explosive perimeter cornerbacks available in each of the first four rounds. I expect Christian Gonzalez and Devon Witherspoon to be the first two players drafted at the position, but we should see five, maybe even six, taken in the first round.

2) Tight end

This is one of the most promising tight end classes I've seen in a while. Michael Mayer, Luke Musgrave, Dalton Kincaid and Darnell Washington are the most well-known prospects and each is worthy of going inside the first 40 picks. But there should be starting-caliber players selected a little later on, including Luke Schoonmaker, Tucker Kraft, Sam LaPorta and Brenton Strange.

3) Edge defender

If your team is looking for an edge defender, you should hope it addresses the position within the first 75 picks because the depth will start to diminish after that point in the draft. Will Anderson Jr. and Tyree Wilson have high-end potential and there is a nice collection of future starters with size and/or explosiveness within the first two rounds. Some of the most intriguing prospects include Tuli Tuipulotu, Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Isaiah Foskey, who should go in the second round. Keion White has the versatility to play inside or outside, but for the purposes of this article, I'm classifying him as an edge defender, which strengthens this position group.

4) Wide receiver

This year's group of wide receivers reminds me of the 2016 class, which saw Corey Coleman, Will Fuller, Josh Doctson and Laquon Treadwell come off the board first, in that order. There wasn't a true WR1 in that group, and I get the same feeling from the top of the current class. Second-rounders Michael Thomas and Tyler Boyd became two of the best receivers drafted in 2016 (with fifth-rounder Tyreek Hill leading the group), and I believe we could see a similar pattern develop from the 2023 crop. I expect Jalin Hyatt to become a dangerous complementary weapon, while guys like Zay Flowers and Josh Downs should become productive slot targets. But I'm not seeing the top-end talent that recent drafts have offered at wide receiver.

5) Quarterback

Last year's quarterback class was light on star power but possessed ample depth. I have five quarterbacks carrying starter-level grades this year (Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, Hendon Hooker). Three passers could come off the board very early and four could go inside the top 10 or so picks. However, there's not great depth in this class, which could lead some QB-needy teams to wait until next year to address the position.

6) Interior defensive line

This group features Jalen Carter, one of the most talented players in the draft, but it's light on prospects I'm projecting to become either star-level players or high-end starters. Mazi Smith and Siaki Ika are large, powerful men with good athleticism. They're ready to clog the middle, while Calijah Kancey is a small but explosive penetrator with a higher ceiling and lower floor due to his size. Prospects like Zacch Pickens, Jaquelin Roy and Cameron Young are indicative of the value that the middle rounds will offer. There is enough depth here for teams to find potential future starters on Day 3 (Rounds 4-7) of the draft.

7) Interior offensive line

If Peter Skoronski and Matthew Bergeron were to move from offensive tackle to guard -- a transition I expect Cody Mauch to make -- this position would rank higher on my list. However, I'm not moving Skoronski and Bergeron inside for this exercise. Now that we've cleared that up, the group fizzles a bit with the center position potentially offering up more quality starting talent than guard. John Michael Schmitz, Joe Tippmann, O’Cyrus Torrence and Mauch are the headliners here. Steve Avila is just a step down from that group but is also headed for a starting role in the NFL. It gets a little trickier finding future first-stringers beyond the first 70 picks.

😎 Offensive tackle

I see Peter Skoronski as this year's No. 1 offensive tackle prospect, although his best position could ultimately be guard. When weighed against the last several drafts, most of the top tackles in this draft would fall into Day 2 (Rounds 2-3) territory, in my opinion. There will be tackles pushed into the top 40 picks who become starters, but the class is extremely light on depth and it's unlikely to produce top-tier talent.

9) Running back

Bijan Robinson is the clear-cut champ of this group, carrying a high draft grade thanks to his traits and complete game. Jahmyr Gibbs is the only other back with a chance to be picked in the first round, but I don't view him as a full-time workhorse. There are a few runners worthy of Day 2 consideration, but overall, this class figures to be heavy on complementary backs and light on starters.

10) Safety

Last year we saw three safeties drafted in the first round. This year, Brian Branch is the only safety I expect to go in Round 1, and some teams will have him slotted as a nickel corner. Day 2 will offer up a few future starters, with Antonio Johnson and Jordan Battle leading the way and Jartavius Martin impressing at the NFL Scouting Combine. Ji’Ayir Brown might fall to Day 3 after not showing ideal speed/explosiveness at the combine, but he is a good football player. Memphis' Quindell Johnson is my Day 3 sleeper from this group. Overall, however, this isn't a great class.

11) Linebacker

This is not the greatest year to be in need of help at linebacker. However, I am much higher on Arkansas inside linebacker/rush specialist Drew Sanders than some of my fellow draft analysts. I think he fits today's model of the versatile athlete teams seek. After Sanders, I believe the pickings get slim in a hurry. There is below-average depth, with many prospects projecting as special teams contributors who are unlikely to develop into starters.

Spoiler

While Young was 204 pounds at the combine, it will be a surprise if he weighs that much in the fall. When scouts visited Alabama during Young’s time there, he weighed about 190 pounds, according to more than one of them.

“His weight was manufactured for the combine, then his agents didn’t allow him to get weighed at his pro day,” says an AFC front-office person also granted anonymity. “He’s a 185- to 190-pound guy frame-wise.”

So the cj stroud score thing is bs and the score isn’t representative.

I don’t know much about this new test. But I’ve watched CJ play and I’ve heard him speak throughout his time in Columbus. Have you heard him speak? He’s obviously not the brightest guy in the world. I don’t like listening to him speak. He’s got a “duh” quality to the way he speaks, he speaks slowly, and isn’t particularly articulate. And maybe it wouldn’t bother you but he spends WAY too much time giving praise to his personal lord and savior Jesus Christ and it’s his will and his plan and blah blah blah. Look dude, I don’t believe in God but even if there were a god, He wouldn’t give a shit who won a football game. I’ll spare you a long rant on the subject but hearing someone his age be so outspoken about it doesn’t give me the impression that they’re all that bright and I kind of get the impression that it’s more about them than it is about their faith. I won’t miss that shit at all.

Of course I was always rooting for him, I enjoyed the success he did have, and I wish him success at the next level. I’m hardly an expert but I’m not expecting him to have a successful pro career. I’ve been in a position to hear a lot of people telling me as a Buckeye exactly what I want to hear about him. What I’ve seen with my eyes hasn’t always agreed with what I’ve been told. He does have good stats. He’s accurate on deep balls. He’s not as accurate on crossing routes. He often throws the ball behind his receivers. Some of his stats he does owe to his very talented receivers making circus catches of less than perfect throws that a lot of receivers wouldn’t have made. He has a good completion percentage, but if you can pressure him then his completion percentage drops off sharply. I’ve seen him panic and make some godawful throws that have resulted in picks. I think he got better at avoiding those over time. He’s often had a tendency to hold on to the ball too long.

I don’t think he’s quick when it comes to decision making. That’s the main reason I haven’t seen him as someone who will have a successful pro career. He has the physical tools, although I’m not sure if he has the physical toughness to hold up in the pros. I think he’d need to bulk up quite a bit.  I just don’t see him handling the speed of the game at the next level. The reports about his low score on the cognitive test seem to confirm what I’ve already been thinking for quite some time.

I’m not qualified to judge but that’s my take. I could be wrong. But I’ll bet I’m right.
