Ate at a Tiger Noodle in Rice village. This place that caters to college students is better than any chinese ive had in Austin.

There are, no doubt, 1000 Asian places in Houston that are just completely outstanding. That said, if you look for that sort of place, you can find a number of them in Austin now. We went to Special Noodle last night up 183, and it was fantastic and authentic as hell. A number of places on north Lamar, too. But they don’t get the Instagram buzz, and aren’t on the beaten path.
Whereas Houston is so hodge-podge, someone you might know is close to every such spot. No doubt, in looking for good Asian grub, it’s easier to find in Houston. But Austin has improved by leaps and bounds, you just don’t hear about it. Because influencers aren’t eating there, and this town’s entire scene is defined by fucking influencers.

Hu’s Cooking at Holcombe and Kirby is our go to Chinese when in town at MDA. I always hear a fair amount of chinese being spoken when we’re there, which is always a good sign.

Ate at this exact location about 6 years ago while in town for work. Don’t recall what I had, but I remember everything was great. I enjoyed that area way more than the usual areas I stayed in Houston for work. Looking at you League City.

You just basically said Houston is Lagos.

Explains why Nigerians don't miss a beat in Houston.

I transferred back to Houston from Lagos.  There are some similarities, that's for sure.  But at least the part of Lagos we were in had a fairly constant sea breeze blowing most of the time.  That was nice even though it was still hot af.

Houston’s breeze is either just from a car flying by at 70 mph or it’s basically a refinery’s hot stinky fart

Walked right past it. Definitely hitting it up on my next MDA visit.

Really, really bad in the neighborhoods east of Downtown off of 10. They’ll just park them for the better part of an hour during the workday.

Man, I know what the numbers say but I also know what all four of us in the family felt this past weekend   I used to say the same shit when I Iived in Houston and I'm telling you it feels absolutely more comfortable in Austin.  Breeze in Houston was non existent this weekend.   Nice wind tonight in SW Austin.

That said, every time I go to POST I say it's one of the best things Houston has done in years.

I was in San Antonio last 2 weekends and it felt hotter than Houston.

Here's the thing about Texas.  HOT AF in the summer.  Doesn't really matter where you are.  You are picking nits at that point.

Wasnt san antonio hotter, degree-wise, than houston the past two weekends? Houston has had its coolest summer in decades this year, so far. Part of it is the fact that its rained every 3-4 days since april

I study the weather pretty carefully to figure out when to water my oak trees and flowers and walk the dogs.

Houston is no go zone between 9am and 9pm in July and August and we’ve had a pretty mild summer. This is incredibly frustrating as a pet owner and amateur gardener.

Some of our 5-530am walks this summer have been downright pleasant. You can do a lot worse than upper 70s with a nice breeze. I’ve always maintained the best way to survive a Houston summer is to do everything outdoors before dawn.

I’m shocked more Houston homes don’t have a second floor porch. It’s really the only way to catch a nice breeze at night in the summers. Growing up a young lady down the street had one. Her house was usually first in line to go hang out at. She was lucky, pretty rare in new construction. You only really see them in older houses that used it as a sleeping porch in the summers before AC. The Hogg Mansion is a classic example.

I’ve lived in each of the 4 major Texas cities for at least a year. Humblest of brags. I’d say Dallas had the worst weather. Very hot summers and winters approaching something like you’d see in Oklahoma. I think the summer we lived there we had 60+ consecutive days over 100.

I won’t discount the dry heat. I was able to walk the dogs in New Braunfels back in July without breaking a sweat. The Hill Country really shines at night. It’s possible to go bar hopping in the summers without getting drenched in sweat.

I guess I'm in the minority of one that still enjoys downtown. Plenty of good bars and the restaurant scene is improving. I'm downtown bar hopping about once a month, although Main St is getting too clubby for me.

Notsuoh remains one of the best bars in Texas, if not the world

WWI artillery shell found in memorial park

Quote

HOUSTON — A Houston Police Department bomb squad exploded part of a WWI-era artillery shell that was found in the woods at Memorial Park on Monday.

HPD first posted about it a little before 3 p.m. In their post, they said the bomb squad was there looking at an “unexploded WWI era ordnance.".

We later heard from the Memorial Park Conservancy that the shell was found during site preparation for Memorial Groves, a section of the park dedicated to honoring the 70,000 soldiers who trained at Camp Logan during World War I.

Tbh, of they enforce traffic laws that'll make drivers less pissed off. Constantly dodging beat up Nissans with paper plates that are recklessly merging into the 59/610 interchange will put the rage into most people

Mrs. Brat grew up in her grandpa’s house in Taylor 1949-63.
It has the big upstairs sleeping porch in front, and a smaller one in back.
Everybody in three generations of her family slept out on those screened in porches 95% of the time.
After we married in 1967, I slept out on the front one several times when we visited. It was an ok experience except for the noise from the train yard a quarter mile away in the early morning hours when trains were being assembled.
Her grandpa, a prominent builder, built that big house in 1910.

I rode right past that house on Saturday, and it caught my eye.  Very cool to read the connection.

Yeah, sounds like it’s a trend on TikTok to kick front doors and run. I thought eating Tide Pods was a bad idea, but holy shit this may be worse.

Leon Gonzalo Jr., 42, was booked into jail Tuesday morning, Harris County court records show. Gonzalo is “the defendant charged with shooting and killing the child,” the Harris County District Attorney’s Office told CNN.

If the shooter had been a non-Hispanic white guy who shot a black kid, I think we would be hearing more from some that the shooting was somewhat justified. Unfortunate and sad but it was the kid's fault. Given that the shooter sounds to be hispanic, from his last name, we need to toss him in prison. If the dead kid is white, then the electric chair.  (I'm paraphrasing the TexAgs sentiments.)

Seriously it sounds like the shooter somewhat followed the kid most likely eliminating any self defense or protecting his home defense.
